2003 AKA Convention and Grand Nationals (Day 4)

It was a relief not to have any outdoor sport kite competitions scheduled today, as the weather supposedly hit 32 degrees on the field last night and part of this morning… Our morning began with some more workshops and the Sport Kite Symposium, where whoever wants to can attend and pose questions to the AKA’s sport kite committee as well as listen in on the hot topics.

There have been shuttles running from the hotel to field every 30 minutes or so each day, and I decided to take advantage having been a touch slower to get out of bed to start with.

The Air Force museum is something else… Comprised of three giant hangars and connected by various halls, you can find nearly every type of plane out there from bi planes to stealth bombers, from helicopters to Air Force One.

In the center of their middle hangar, the museum provided ample space and a lot of trust in fliers to put on their competition there… And what a setting!

While each performer set up for their routine Corey Jensen kept the crowd entertained with anecdotes and kite humor.

When it was all said and done the three top finishers were Lam Hoac, Scott Weider and Shawn Tinkham with 1st, 2nd and 3rd places to be announced at Saturday’s main banquet.

As they do every year, the Pin Challenge and Fly Mart were held… With some premium vendors in attendance, there were some excellent toys to be had for sure.

Well kids, it’s 2am yet again… And I’m up for a long day judging tomorrow, so this pup needs his rest.

Until tomorrow,

John Barresi
