AKA Corner – March 2012

One year ago, northern Japan was devastated by earthquakes and a tsunami. To commemorate this event; the lives lost; and the strength of the survivors, our friends in the Japan Kite Association are asking that each and everyone take a few minutes on Sunday March 11 to fly a white kite. Please join in wherever you are for at least a few moments.

Our financial picture as of the end of February looks very good. Membership revenue is ahead of budget; expenses are still being tightly controlled. The complete report will be posted in kite talk forum, or request a copy and it will be sent directly to you.

Plans are well underway for the 2012 convention in Enid OK being held from October 1-6. The logo and hotel information will be posted to the website within the next few days. This will be the least expensive convention in years. Our targeted registration rate is about half of what it has been in recent years. Trophy sponsorship rates have also been cut.

Watch for lots of changes in response to the convention surveys.

Bob Kelly is still looking for volunteers. If you can help, drop a note.

One specific item that needs help is the design and layout of the program cover. There may be a special pin in it for you. Please contact me for details.

What plans have you made for National Kite Month? Events are being registered on the AKA calendar. Be sure to add yours to the list. Prizes, there are prizes being offered this year. Complete details are in the latest issue of Kiting, the one with with pink/green elephant kite on the front.

Thanks to Phil Broder for locating a new printer who is offering full color and at a price reduction from before. It just keeps getting better! The board recently approved a new contract for the editor for another 2 years. Keep sending in those articles and pictures. Content depends on each of us.

Speaking of Kiting, have you received your copy? If not, let me know and another issue will be mailed to you.

2012 is the year for Dieppe. The Dieppe, Canada festival will be held in August. They have a great line-up of invited guests. Find more information at dieppekite.ca

In September, the huge festival in Dieppe, France takes place. Attracting close to 250,000 spectators, and kiters from over 40 countries, it has to be seen to be believed. If you would like to join the AKA delegation, please contact Marla Miller at vp1 at aka.kite.org. Being part of the delegation allows you access to the fields.

The kite records committee needs a new chair. After several years, Jim Martin Jr has resigned to due to work time commitments.

The question I hear most often is: Who is running for president for 2013? Will your name be the answer.

That’s all for now. As always, send in those comments and questions.

Time to fly!
