  1. I'm working on a 2008 wall calendar of kites, and I need your best photos. Some basic requirements: -- At least 11" wide by 8.5" high (i.e. like a page of KITING magazine turned on its side) -- Has room for a 1/2" of bleed (overlap) on each side. (Which really means the photo has to be 12" wide by 9.5" high) -- Has a kite related theme. Sport kite, single line kite, fighter kite, traction kite, and KAP photos are all good. -- Doesn't prominently display the name of a kite company. -- High resolution!!!! Full resolution would be a full bleed (9.5" x 12" at 300 ppi). No one has that many pixels. But please send your highest resolution. Camera phone pictures and lo-res "web friendly" shots are not acceptable. -- No more than two submissions per household, please. -- By submitting a photo for this calendar, you give all publication rights (present and future) to the AKA. The best pictures will be selected by the editor of KITING magazine, with oversight by the AKA President. Deadline is October 15, 2007. E-mail all entries, including your name as you would like it used in a photo credit, to kitephil@gmail.com.

I might make it for a little while, if I can get some progress going on the huge pile of kites I still have to sew before the AKA convention. Aerochic, if you show up, I'll have a mess of new pennants. Maybe we can talk about one for you....
  3. All my Dieppe pix are online at http://picasaweb.google.com/KitePhil/DieppeIntLKiteFest2007. Some awesome kites there, and five fun days.
  4. Here's some shots of iQuad, the Hamamatsu flyers, and the Berkeley Kite Wranglers from last weekend's Berkeley Kite Fest. http://picasaweb.google.com/KitePhil/BerkeleyKiteFestival07
  5. Jen: We worked out the deal with Paramount Studios to show the movie in Ocean Shore because the AKA convention starts there that day, so 400 kitefliers will be in town. And since the movie will only be open to convention registrants -- in other words, you WON'T be able to buy a ticket at the box office that day -- the only way to see it is to sign up for the convention. Or wait until November when it comes out in general release.
  6. Alright, I've been holding this news in for a couple weeks, waiting for the official announcement. And I just can't keep it secret anymore! It's my birthday, and I need to share the joy. If you need another reason to attend the 30th AKA Convention in Ocean Shores, WA, how 'bout this... On Monday, October 1, at 8:00 p.m., the world premiere of "The Kite Runner" will be in Ocean Shores (at the theater near the convention center), open only to convention attendees. The movie was filmed in part at Cesar Chavez Park in Berkeley, CA, using several AKA members. It's directed by Marc Forster, whose recent work includes "Stranger Than Fiction." This movie won't open in the rest of the world until early November, so come to Ocean Shores and get the jump on everyone else. Paramount Vantage Studios will also be handing out free goodies. Don't forget the popcorn!
  7. No website. I don't typically sell anything, so I've never worried about advertising. Quickest way to get a Twelvewinds kite is to a)trade me for something you've built, or be my friend for a lot of years until I run out of store-bought stuff to give you for your birthday. If you really want to see my work, just read KITING. As the editor, pages 1-52 are my work.
  8. Thanks. Problem isn't price, it's time. If you want to pick four colors out, I can get you a banner, oh, maybe sometime in January if I'm lucky. Right now I've got a nice backlog of kites I need to build for competition and other people.
  9. What's the right price? Cuz they're mine. I made them at the Maryland Kite Society retreat in February. It's Jon Burkhardt's design. They're hellaciously simple to make -- pick four colors, cut the pieces out, overlap them and sew together -- and took me about one day per banner. I've got four done (just rotating the colors through the pattern) and I'll probably make four more. And the plans will be published in the autumn issue of KITING (which means that if you're not an AKA member, you've got about three weeks to join in order to get the next issue).
