WILDWOOD — The arrival of Memorial Day Weekend means four jam-packed days of fun and festivities in the Wildwoods with celebrations, events, and this year, highlighted by elaborate tributes to all of those whom Memorial Day is meant to honor.
Official Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony: It all kicks off on Friday, May 25 with the annual Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony at 12:30 p.m., on the beach at Burk Avenue next to the Wildwoods Convention Center. Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler, Harlem Globetrotter Blenda Rodriguez and New Jersey Executive Director of Travel and Tourism Grace Hanlon will join state, county and local officials in kicking off the 2012 summer season.
Also joining the ceremony will be Captain Kelly (USCG) and Lt. Commander Scott Rea (USCG), who will be in the Wildwoods for the Coast Guard Recruit Graduation. This impressive and emotional military ceremony will be open to the public at the Wildwoods Convention Center Friday, May 25, at 11 a.m.
Wildwoods’ International Kite Festival: The Wildwoods’ International Kite Festival, the largest kite festival in North America, takes place starting Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28 on the Rio Grande Avenue Beach. It begins with a night-time illuminated kite fly at 9 p.m. on Friday. The East Coast Stunt Kite Championships take place all day Saturday and Sunday on the beach, as well as kite exhibitions and workshops. The Festival ends Monday in the Wildwoods’ Convention Center with a choreographed indoor kite fly, free to spectators.
Celebration of Heroes Festival: The highlight of the Memorial Day weekend is the premier of the Celebration of Heroes Festival. This three-day festival focuses on the holiday’s true meaning by paying tribute to our veterans, military and first responders, who are being offered discounts and specials at hotels, restaurants and amusements. All weekend long, military families can get in touch with their loved ones at the Xfinity Interactive Center via satellite through Skype and text message centers, or send postcards through a mass mail-call courtesy of The National Constitution Center.
Saturday’s fun continues with the “Taste of Wildwoods” Food & Music Festival at Fox Park from noon to 9 p.m. and on Sunday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food and merchandise vendors, military displays, the Ford Experience Exhibit, live music performances and radio station broadcasts will be present.
“Foodies” who like to live on the edge will be especially interested in the Dangerous Wines attraction at this Festival. Stop by and try some Dangerous Nutz, Dangerous Crab Cakes and Dangerous Wine samplings. Their Dangerous Chef will be doing demos every 2 hours starting at noon each day; and Russ Newberry from the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” will appear at the Dangerous booth area each day to sign autographs and share crabbing stories. Proceeds from Dangerous Wines sales go to help wounded troops.
On Sunday at 8 p.m. the Wildwoods Convention Center’s Oceanfront Arena will host the culminating event of Celebration of Heroes Memorial Day Weekend Beach Festival: the Wildwoods Celebration of Heroes (COH) Benefit Concert, a compelling homage to the immensely popular USO Variety Show concerts hosted for decades by legendary comedian, U.S. military supporter and humanitarian Bob Hope.
Kite Day in Campbellford (Ontario)

http://www.northumbe...in-campbellford

CAMPBELLFORD -- Ferris Provincial Park plans to invade the skies on May 27 with their annual kite day.
Friends of Ferris Park board members Barb Hogan, Sandy Chapman and Carol Robertson are in charge of kite construction, for the annual event, and with this being their 14th year, they have got it down to a science.
"We hold it in the field south of the main entrance, to Ferris Park, and children of all ages come from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They get their kites, decorate them, then we put tails on them and they go fly a kite," Ms. Chapman said, adding there is no charge for the event, but donations will be accepted.
The event has been a huge hit in the past, Ms. Chapman said, and this year they are putting together 150 kites and are confident no kite will be left behind.
"There have been more than 400 people come out. It's a real family affair," Ms. Hogan said.
Kite day draws people from all over the area and along with a barbecue, it makes for a great day, she said.
Ms. Hogan added kite day is just one of the many activities they do to promote the park that has more than 163 camp sites, many walking trails, the Ranny Falls and the suspension bridge, just to name a few, she said.
The main ingredient for the kites is tyvek house wrap, which is used to wrap lumber for shipping, and all the area lumber stores have been wonderful in donating their used materials as well as other local businesses who have made donations, she said.
However the three women have to still cut all the kites out and attach the dowels to reinforce the design so when it comes to kite day, all that has to be done after the kids decorate their kites is attach the tails, she said.
Inspired by Fred and Carol Ellis who got kite day off the ground 14 years ago, the three women have taken up the task of aerodynamic construction with enthusiasm.
For them, promoting the park is a pleasure because it provides something for everyone and it's a real jewel in the Trent Hills landscape.

These family entertainers delight patrons of all ages with comedy, juggling, balloon art, yo-yos, and diabolos. And a Children's Tent offers many opportunities to keep kids of all ages entertained, including hilarious bol races, a bubble station, balloon sculpting, a straw bale maze, and a treasure-filled sand pile, as well as face-painting and tattoos.

The festival also offers an engaging exhibit from the Swift Current Museum featuring the history of our area’s wind and weather, and the Kinetic Wind Sculpture Garden featuring handmade artworks that interact with the breeze.
Since 1993, the Southern Oregon Kite Festival (SOKF) has been one of the premier kite festivals in the United States, bringing some of the most well known kite fliers and kite makers to perform and display their creations for locals and tourists alike… This invitational event originated as the dream of kite hobbyist Steve O’Brien and as the creation of Larry and Lynn Goodman, former owners of KCRE radio station in Crescent City, California. Beginning in 2001 the Port of Brookings Harbor assumed sponsorship of the festival. In 2006 the kite festival became a non-profit organization managed by a dedicated group of community volunteers. – Free admission

.

Many featured kites defy description, including “fighting kites” and a “head-turning display of three, 90-foot-long octopus kites called octopile. Other kites will include: stunt and dancing kites, Mimi the Pink Ladybug, Teddy Bear, owl, manta ray and cat kites. Kite Fest 2012 will be held in the field of NIU’s “North 40,” at Lucinda Avenue and Kishwaukee Drive, DeKalb, near Annie’s Woods and Anderson Hall. Admission is free.

Building on the success of last year’s family-oriented event, Kite Fest will feature kite-making for children, a candy drop, TAILS animal petting, give-aways and games.

Food will be provided by DeKalb Elks Lodge 765. Other organizations participating include the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce/DeKalb Area Convention & Visitors Bureau; DeKalb Park District; and Art Attack.

Fieber also enjoys teaching kite making to adults and children. He is an instructor at the annual Midwest Area Kitemakers Retreat, in Oregon, IL.

DeKalb Kite Fest 2012 offers plenty of space for participants to fly their own kites. Bring a kite, make a kite or buy a kite from ChicagoKite/Kite Harbor Kite Shop, which will be on-site.

Spectators are invited to bring a chair to sit back and enjoy watching the sky fill with color. Food and water will be available for purchase. Also, WLBK will conduct a live broadcast from the kite field.

“With so much to do and so many ways to participate, we hope folks will take time to enjoy all that we have in store,” said Jim and Chris Overmann, organizers of the event.

David Gomberg, of the American Kite Association, encourages participating in this fun event.

"If you haven't seen what modern kiting is all about, you really need to get out to a festival like DeKalb’s and check out the shapes, the colors, and the amazing things people are doing in the sky," he said.

Sponsors of the event include KishHealth System/Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 1360AM WLBK Radio, National Bank & Trust Company, Northern Illinois University Athletics, The Gardens of RiverMist, NI Publishing, Target, DeKalb Area Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, Mike Mooney Chevrolet Cadillac Inc,Chicago kite and DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.
