Maybe you've allready heard of the sponsorship the Austrian High Energy Drink RED BULL for technical sports like F1 car race, plane races, kitesurfing, snowbording, and so on...

It now sponsors a great international, but mainly french team : the new RED BULL KITE FORCE, managed by the well known Yasu Numata from japan how lives in Paris. He learn how to fly kites with the french team Lung Ta (Vice-world champion) and was the leader of the team Overdrive, world champion 2002 and 2003. The other members are amazing flyers, like Richard Debray, mathieu Mayet and Ramial Tien (exelent 2 line flyer but he also creates lots of artistic big single line display kites)

The are planing to compete again for a new world title - and will do shows in Redbull events all over the world as they've done last year, with freestyle, pair, team demos (4 to 8 flyers), one Rev and multi rev demos + the big artic dispays of single line kites...

That's been a circular discussion for YEARS.

Imagine however, we get our time in the Olympics, Pepsi has sponsored their $10,000 or whatever, and there's no wind.

Problem is, there are just a small handful of sport kite performers who could put on a show of that scale, at high quality, in *any* wind condition.

I think it's a grand idea, but I'm having trouble imagining a wind generator that could create a wind window with steady wind, large enough to handle 120' lines.

We're talking something on the scale of a wind tunnel big enough for a 747.

You're too restricted by reality and money. Think of the luge track that was built for this year's Olympics? It had to of cost a fortune, and yet, it'll see limited usage over it's lifetime.

So, back of the envelope calcs: The Sauber Wind Tunnel at Hinwill was projected to cost 70 million Swiss Frances to build in 2003 (can't find the actual cost, but then this is just an estimate anyway.) It has a test area that is 15 square meters in cross section through which air can be made to travel at 300 kph. That's a flow rate of 45,000,000 cubic meters of air every hour or 1,580,000,000 cubic feet of air per hour. Our wind tunnel would need to be about 130 feet high (120 feet of lines plus tall John) by 240 feet wide (that should allow for team flying.) Thus the opening will have about 31,200 square feet. With the same airflow as the Sauber Wind Tunnel, we could achieve a max air speed of 9.65 mph. That should work.

So, ignoring inflation and many other details, all we need is 70 million Swiss Frances (~65 million US dollars) and the money to maintain and run this facility. Oh yes, the fan unit consumes 3000kW of energy when running. Since that's about $4,000 of electricity per hour, the cost of flying could be prohibitive!

Wonder if Ben would like to sponsor something like this?

You might want to thank Mother Nature the next time you're flying ... the man made experience would be beyond our means.

Cheers,

Tom

Anyway...Had "Elvira" (My Most Beautiful Black Rainbow mid-vent Rev.) out today wearing "4 wraps"!!

We never flew in a fairly consistant 18 to 23 mph wind!! (No lack of wind today...we can have the Olympics in Florida!) B)

I tried to restrain her (you know...training and all) But she kept screeming "Let Me Fly!" "Let Me Fly!" So I let her FLY!! Those 4 wraps were like "broomsticks" she was riding on and she "tore the sky up"!! :clap;

What a BLAST we had!! :shifty:

Keep It Up!

Duane
