Eyes in the sky

Recommended Posts

Yesterday the wife and I spent some well needed time together on a very quite beach. Although there was not alot of talk between the 2 of us... I fly Kites and she relaxes, reads, takes pics...

The beach was empty of people and I was running some 120' lines on the Rev...and decided to put the Wala xl up with the tails since the wind was blowing great. While setting up I thought, why not make a video and clipped my EVO cell to the bridle in front of the tow point.

Away it went! I kept it low for a bit....but showing stable flight, I let her loose up to about 100'. There she flew for a good 15 minutes. Then I brought it down to about 50' and tied it off to fly on its own, while I played with the Rev some. What fun! The antisipation of getting to where I could watch the footage was great. Although not much of the footage,if any,was any good....it was great fun and a learning experience. Can't wait for a new kite setup and some more tinkering!post-7551-0-10492900-1377116831_thumb.jppost-7551-0-52370800-1377116870_thumb.jp

It's a nice spot. School is back in and majority of folks at work still...so its quite. Also fun in the winter. It's a state park Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park..it has camping, frisbee golf, popular mountain bike and hiking trails,a huge pond with picnic areas.....and of course the beach. Popular area for surfing, kiteboarding for our area....the poles.

I will edit the video...a couple shots of the coast and the wife and I gazing up... A few moments of a Rev playing alongside :) most of it was very shaky and camera was shifting angles...so its a little hard to watch ..lol. Still fun!

Man, does that look familiar ! Wife in chair, with a beer or a book, etc. Revs set-up on the sand, ready to go in a minute, and of all things, a Wala in the sky (with tails)...................Just come on up the coast a few hundred miles, and ditto, ditto ! Very cool !

Ok Scott, now it looks like you are beginning to dabble in KAP. You know that's a whole 'nother hobby ! :cat_lol:

So many toys, so little time ! Hmmmmmmmm :ani_victory:

Been toying around with the idea, of getting a decent sized "lifter" myself (rok, dc, sled, etc). I just haven't decided which one. Also, worried that it might likewise, lead to KAP ! Oh my, so many toys, so little time! :ani_wallbash:

I've been looking. Think I'm going to go with the SkyForm mini from Gomberg with the tail for a starter....and a little laundry play. As far as the camera part...I will probably play with that for awhile on my own. I've seen some nice set ups...and Robs GoPro videos sold me as far as ease of use...just don't have the moolah for that right now and I love to tinker, with the availability of servos and stuff from an R/c past.

  • 2 weeks later...

So i got bored at work and made a no cost pivacet suspension rig from an old curtain rod. this was the test run on an ocean front parking lot. No aiming or goal in the video, strictly test run........ but got a crash on concrete :) This was attached to my Wala Xl with full tail.....dodging palms ,cars, light poles...lol stayed up for 30 minutes. This was the only footage lit well enough.

Well, that's a start, I suppose ! Hope the damage wasn't too bad..... :ani_wallbash: ......sounded terrible ! Yikes....... :cat_shocked:
....tis but a scratch! Sounded much worse than it was :) most of the contact was on the rig itself. Figured it would get a giggle. The win wasn't quite strong enough on the beach , so I was shooting a channel between 2 8 story buildings....makes for a fun ride in the dark with the long tail :o

Man, that doesn't sound like fun. I really dislike flying near buildings, or any other large objects. The turbulence is never fun, or good. So you have your kite up, perfectly nailed to the sky, all day long, then all of a sudden, when it's time to come down, invariably, during that last 50' of line retrieval, the thing develops a "mind of it's own", and decides to go berserk on you ! :o

Turbulence !! Turbulence !!

That's what's so nice about flying on the beach, with perfectly clean air, coming in off the water. You can bring that kite all the way down, without incidence, right into your hands - just smooth as silk ! :)

But of course, inland flying is never quite like that...crash/boom crash/boom..... :sly:

Well ,I just reviewed yesterdays run on the beach. I must say OH MY!

For a basically no cost rig,a cheap camera, and a kite not really designed for carrying camera rigs.....wow!

Once into a comfortable window position, the video is amazingly stable.Even in rising and falling its not too bad. About to start chopping it up and i will post a little to share the east coast with everyone. :single:

Who knows......... a big foil or 2 might even come cruising in close..... :)

If you notice it was staring north...... Looking for a big yellow sled or a tortuga rainbow double dc. ;-)

If it was looking North for my "big yellow sled", you need to pan over, just a few degrees to the West. We're back home now, but I was just thinking about checking out some of my old "lake spots" this afternoon. We've got a nice little SW 8 - 10 going on right now, but it's still very warm and "muggy". I'll have to check back with my Windtronic 2, a few more times, just to make sure this breeze is going to hang around (or I could just run out and use Wayne's wet finger method - not sure how that's calibrated, though) :cat_lol:
