2015 Shanghai Auto Show

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just a heads up, I'm currently at the Seattle airport on my way to meet Tristan Underwood in Shanghai, China where we'll be flying both dual and quad line indoor demonstrations as part of the Volkswagen exhibit during the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show... 16 days abroad, back in the U.S. on the 30th of April if all goes as planned.

Will try to share photos and videos as possible, thanks for your patience with my response time to threads, PMs and emails during this trip.

Fly on, fly on! ;)

So how does a northwest US dude get invited to come fly at a car show in China? I think it's awesome. I'm just curious about the process.

Well, first you must become the dominant flyer by kicking butt at all levels of the game for 20-some years. After that it's pretty easy.

you get invited because

,.....everyone knows your name, even if you don't know theirs. They know your capabilities and enjoy your company also

as opposed to a friend's great saying about myself

"everyone knows you Paul,.... and a few of those people actually like you!"

or this classic

"out of everyone I know,... you are one of 'em"

Aye, short and skinny of it...

Gotta have a body of work, well distributed, that folks can find... Helps to have a lot of variety, good presentation, accolades, and some portfolio work is good too (like my work for Red Bull, Cavalia, etc).

In this case, they found Tristan and I exactly this way - just Google and YouTube searching for kite performers. ;)

That answered my question perfectly. They knew they wanted indoor kites, then went online to find the indoor fliers that they wanted to approach.

Very very cool vids. What an amazing show, and such a cool creative way to incorporate kites! I tell ya, man, in front of all those folks and with the critical timing and slick presentation, good on ya to be able to look that natural and "bring it" on demand. Truly impressive. Simply another level of professionalism.

Aye, the pressure is on with a gig like this... German perfection and all. :)

Out of 40 scheduled shows, I'm happy to report that I only had to pick up my kite once (snagged line on a throw) and only did a "penguin walk" (lines around feet/legs) off the stage twice... Not bad out of so many outings, I honestly expected more with the tight quarters and odd shifting wind pressures in a venue of that size.
