I enjoy building and flying scratchbuilt foamie rc planes but one thing is they don't tend to work as well when wind kicks up...so started thinking maybr i needed something fun to fly when its windier...never have rrally flown a kite other than those cheapo kids toy types and honeslty didnt sre the fun in it...but remeber seeing someone a long tiem agao flying a two line delta kite amd thought looked fun...so rather impulsively after some rather cursory searching I bought a HQ symphony beach III 2.2 off amazon for $50. Not sure if it was a good choice or not. I love in NW indiana and have access to fairly wide open farmland and frequent beach visits on east side of Lake Michigan. I figured it has less breakable parts than a delta and would be a good into to see if I like it. Now I need to wait for it to come....but what windspeed would you recommend for a total newbie to try it out? It says the kite has a huge range of windspeeds it could fly in...but what is the sweet spot for a total newbie?

Thanks and looking forward to getting my kite and trying this hobby...at akme piint might have to blend kites and rc planes and go for a powered kite / rc paraglider.

First off welcome to the forum. There is a lot of knowledge here to help you. I my self have no experience with foils, but have flowing RC.planes in the past, I would have to say if you feel that the is wind to much for the RC than it would perfect to fly the foil. Hope this helps, have fun enjoy and stay self.

Welcome!

No experience here either, but a question - what are the stated wind ranges? I'd guess that close to the middle of them, would be the "ideal" range to learn in. Too light and you struggle to keep the kite airborne, too windy and it's harder to maintain control.

PS: went googling - range looks to be 4 - 30 mph. I'm guessing a good 10 mph would work.

Welcome to the forum. I started with a Prism Snapshot 1.9 foil and still love it. In a 15 mph wind and up it really gives me a workout. Prism says it's good in 4-24 mph winds, but I've found that for it, anything less than 10 mph it's really not worth the effort. But beware, this is only the beginning! I bough tmy first kite two years ago and at last count have 7 or 8!

Where are you in Indiana? We travel fulltime in our RV and usually spend some time in Elkhart every year.

Wow...Just reread my post...sorry for all the typos! So it seems consensus is around 10-15 mph for first flight when I get it. Really looking forward to trying it. Maybe I should've splurged on 2 day shipping but I am too cheap...so now I wait.

Nick- I live around south bend so close to elkhart... plan on taking kite to Warren dunes and other parks along lake Michigan since we pop up there fairly often already...as well as flying closer to home with open fields / farmland

Hi, Dead, and welcome to the forum. Good wind for learning on your Symphony 2.2 starts at 8mph -- should be fine if the wind is fairly constant. You know how lumpy it usually is here in the Midwest! I'm in Schaumburg, Illinois (NW Chicago burb) and usually fly at Busse Woods. The IKE (Illinois Kite Enthusiasts) Club has an annual retreat in September at Indiana Dunes State Park, so come join us. You can get more info at ikeclub.org -- join the forum. It's free, and there are people from IL, WI, MI, MN, CO, OH, FL, CA, WA, and did I mention IN? as well as other states that I didn't mention. You can talk to the guys and gals near you, and get together to fly. We fly everything that flies and some you never heard of, so we can be of some help to you if you need it. You can ask questions there (and here) about your kite that will alleviate some frustration on the field. Even better is to have an experienced flyer help you in person. Just about everyone in the club is experienced in single, dual and quad-line kites, so we can cut a ton of time off your learning curve. If you can make it, there is a festival on Sunday, the 9th of August, in Elmhurst, IL. A bunch of the club members will be there doing demos and flying for fun. You can get more info and location on the IKE forum if you are interested. Should be about a 2-hour drive for you. Come join us if you can.
