May 4, 2017 12:08 am

riffclown: not a mark on it.. except for his signature
May 4, 2017 12:09 am

riffclown: twice
May 4, 2017 12:09 am

riffclown: Hi Mark Welcome
May 4, 2017 12:09 am

John Barresi: Really lucked out on that one... Loved trying to "fly" the kite out of the muck moving all the lines by hand, like quick rigging a sail or something.
May 4, 2017 12:09 am

John Barresi: rofl
May 4, 2017 12:09 am

John Barresi: Mark!!
May 4, 2017 12:09 am

May 4, 2017 12:10 am

mystainedskin: Heloo sir
May 4, 2017 12:10 am

John Barresi: There's a parking lot somewhere missing a kite, me thinks.
May 4, 2017 12:10 am

May 4, 2017 12:10 am

windpoacher: or he's in it now
May 4, 2017 12:10 am

John Barresi: Eve Kelly 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 12:10 am

May 4, 2017 12:10 am

John Barresi: True dat Eli
May 4, 2017 12:10 am

khsidekick: Hello all 🤗
May 4, 2017 12:11 am

Mark Thorn: I got to fly in front of my house.
May 4, 2017 12:11 am

flexifoil21: I was wondering if you guys could talk a bit about "flying with intent"? Specifically, I'm wondering where to draw the line between not enough and too much? Is it better to spend an hour on one skill and really perfect it, or is it better to mix it up a bit with more reps? Kind of like with weight training.
May 4, 2017 12:11 am

mystainedskin: I spend a few minutes...or until I get aggrevated. Move on...the minutes add up in the big picture
May 4, 2017 12:12 am

John Barresi: Bac in a sec
May 4, 2017 12:12 am

riffclown: Coolest place I get to fly is on an Air Force Base..
May 4, 2017 12:12 am

flexifoil21: Do you cycle back and repeat skills after X minutes?
May 4, 2017 12:12 am

riffclown: 100' line limit there though.
May 4, 2017 12:13 am

mystainedskin: Yes and no...just depends on the day
May 4, 2017 12:13 am

riffclown: F22's and all..
May 4, 2017 12:13 am

riffclown: SW Wind for me there is flat off the water.. almost like beach wind without the sand..
May 4, 2017 12:13 am

mystainedskin: Intent for me is flying....seeing what you want and performing it. Using the available window
May 4, 2017 12:14 am

khsidekick: Do you know where the best place to fly is?
May 4, 2017 12:14 am

windpoacher: I try to cycle back but my mood usualy takes me somewhere new
May 4, 2017 12:14 am

riffclown: Intent for me is getting all that sand out of my mesh after the ocean dunking...
May 4, 2017 12:14 am

riffclown: still picking shells out of it..
May 4, 2017 12:14 am

windpoacher: if I was working on something specific , yes again and again and again
May 4, 2017 12:15 am

mystainedskin: If I really want something bad. I will push for hours sometimes. Just depends on connditions and mood as Eli said
May 4, 2017 12:15 am

riffclown: Best place to fly is where you kite puts a smile on your face the the location becomes irrelevant..
May 4, 2017 12:15 am

khsidekick: Where ever you are at that day.
May 4, 2017 12:15 am

May 4, 2017 12:15 am

windpoacher: agreed
May 4, 2017 12:15 am

Mikelp3586: I agree
May 4, 2017 12:16 am

riffclown: but sometimes the view is inspiring
May 4, 2017 12:16 am

windpoacher: oh yeah
May 4, 2017 12:17 am

May 4, 2017 12:17 am

mystainedskin: Although I am in FLorida.....12 miles inland and my local fly spot is a big bowl...so wind really sucks and swirls. The struggle makes you better though.
May 4, 2017 12:17 am

riffclown: Perspective is everything
May 4, 2017 12:17 am

John Barresi: Whoop, sorry, had to walk my papa out.
May 4, 2017 12:17 am

John Barresi: (catching up)
May 4, 2017 12:17 am

John Barresi: To throw my reply in on flexi
May 4, 2017 12:18 am

windpoacher: did you get your answere for intent
May 4, 2017 12:18 am

John Barresi: 's question about intent
May 4, 2017 12:18 am

John Barresi: Short and skinny Russ, it's a tool.
May 4, 2017 12:18 am

riffclown: So for TKL, what do you guys do when you aren't flying kites,, to help pay for the kites??
May 4, 2017 12:18 am

John Barresi: Most depends on what you want to do.
May 4, 2017 12:18 am

mystainedskin: Anything and everything 1f61b.png
May 4, 2017 12:18 am

windpoacher: work work work
May 4, 2017 12:19 am

windpoacher: too much work
May 4, 2017 12:19 am

riffclown: I know that feeling..
May 4, 2017 12:19 am

John Barresi: Evening elmo buddy. 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 12:19 am

mystainedskin: My former trade was Sheetrock. This year I did a few units...covering the Skyburner trio.
May 4, 2017 12:19 am

windpoacher: kiting makes it all worth it
May 4, 2017 12:19 am

riffclown: sucks watching the perfect breeze out of my office windows..Especially since I can see my flying field from my work window.
May 4, 2017 12:20 am

mystainedskin: Been there.
May 4, 2017 12:20 am

windpoacher: ouch !! living the dream
May 4, 2017 12:20 am

John Barresi: Hi Joanna 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 12:21 am

mystainedskin: I now look in.... doesn't pay great...but feeds the soul
May 4, 2017 12:21 am

John Barresi: Nice, we have a bit of a room and are just missing Brett (Flight Risk) from TKL.
May 4, 2017 12:22 am

mystainedskin: Room limit?
May 4, 2017 12:22 am

windpoacher: look down he might be here
May 4, 2017 12:22 am

John Barresi: No room limit.
May 4, 2017 12:22 am

John Barresi: lol Eli
May 4, 2017 12:22 am

May 4, 2017 12:22 am

May 4, 2017 12:23 am

May 4, 2017 12:23 am

riffclown: one more and we get the real treat
May 4, 2017 12:23 am

dragonfish: Hello
May 4, 2017 12:23 am

riffclown: scroll bars
May 4, 2017 12:23 am

riffclown: Hi Joanna
May 4, 2017 12:23 am

John Barresi: Well, let me throw in some fodder and say... Does everyone here know that TKL has no set routines, and only meet up 2-3 times a year? 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 12:23 am

mystainedskin: That was a great picture
May 4, 2017 12:23 am

riffclown: Which one
May 4, 2017 12:24 am

mystainedskin: Dig it..... the 360 of all 4 and nothing but Bretts hand
May 4, 2017 12:24 am

mystainedskin: No routines...sure was easier than cramming that first year
May 4, 2017 12:25 am

khsidekick: Are you going to be at WSIKF this year?
May 4, 2017 12:25 am

John Barresi: TKL?
May 4, 2017 12:25 am

khsidekick: Yes
May 4, 2017 12:25 am

John Barresi: Sadly, no.
May 4, 2017 12:25 am

: no set routines? How do you manage then?
May 4, 2017 12:26 am

khsidekick: Darn it.
May 4, 2017 12:26 am

John Barresi: Me and my family will be in Europe for a month starting Aug 27 and we can't swing both.
May 4, 2017 12:26 am

mystainedskin: I might try...now that Scott is out there
May 4, 2017 12:26 am

windpoacher: maybe for the end, weedkend only
May 4, 2017 12:27 am

John Barresi: No set routines... We have roughly 46 different team maneuvers to draw on, and there are common linkages between them...
May 4, 2017 12:28 am

windpoacher: weekend
May 4, 2017 12:28 am

John Barresi: What we end up with is freestyle calling, kind of like square dance.
May 4, 2017 12:28 am

mystainedskin: That many? I need to brush up
May 4, 2017 12:28 am

riffclown: I've seen you and scott do that.. mixed pairs on the kites even..
May 4, 2017 12:28 am

John Barresi: After that, we just try to pick off 4-6 minute songs and follow the flow.
May 4, 2017 12:29 am

John Barresi: Yep.
May 4, 2017 12:29 am

mystainedskin: I like the card explanation
May 4, 2017 12:29 am

May 4, 2017 12:29 am

windpoacher: ditto
May 4, 2017 12:29 am

mystainedskin: A handful of cards...playing certain ones at certain moments
May 4, 2017 12:30 am

John Barresi: Exactly.
May 4, 2017 12:30 am

mystainedskin: You know what yoou have...It is all in how you play them and when
May 4, 2017 12:30 am

John Barresi: Another way of saying that is we get into a flow of running 3-4 particular moves in sequence, so in essence, they become one move.
May 4, 2017 12:30 am

May 4, 2017 12:30 am

John Barresi: We don't have great audio of us at work yet, but here is some of the calling I did with iQuad, same basic OS. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSuS-sRtr5k-NWKOwVy3b95_YGcfVa89C
May 4, 2017 12:31 am

mystainedskin: I dig the flow. But we do a lot of embedding the moves...just becomes natural when you here the call. Sometimes 1f61b.png
May 4, 2017 12:34 am

riffclown: You guys make Follow the Leader look like child's play.... Meanwhille I'mm yelling at my kite for no reason.
May 4, 2017 12:34 am

John Barresi: Aye, coming back out of any particular move, there are only so many permutations for the next maneuver which narrows it down quite a lot.
May 4, 2017 12:34 am

riffclown: it's doing exactly what my hands are telling it ot
May 4, 2017 12:35 am

John Barresi: When my boys are tuned, their response time to maneuver name AND action call are under a second.
May 4, 2017 12:35 am

John Barresi: lol Riff
May 4, 2017 12:35 am

riffclown: well it's not the kites fault most of the time..
May 4, 2017 12:36 am

windpoacher: try talking nice to your kite 1f609.png
May 4, 2017 12:36 am

riffclown: I did,, took it 2 days to dry out..
May 4, 2017 12:36 am

windpoacher: hahaha lol
May 4, 2017 12:36 am

John Barresi: Follow the leader is actually a lot harder than more complex maneuvers imho, and it still astounds me when folks try to teach people team for the first time by following.
May 4, 2017 12:36 am

mystainedskin: I had and still have difficulties with lines.Took me quite sometime to settle in.
May 4, 2017 12:36 am

John Barresi: Part of what helps too, is the HUD.
May 4, 2017 12:37 am

John Barresi: Heads Up Display
May 4, 2017 12:37 am

John Barresi: Building a "sense" visual of the window, then overlaying grid lines.
May 4, 2017 12:37 am

riffclown: Sorry, I'm picturing the four of you flying with VR headsets on..
May 4, 2017 12:38 am

riffclown: squirrel
May 4, 2017 12:38 am

John Barresi: Thats what really enables straight lines, perfect half height in the window, true center, stair step turn points, circles, all based on grid.
May 4, 2017 12:38 am

John Barresi: squirrel
May 4, 2017 12:38 am

John Barresi: Heyo Rob 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 12:38 am

windpoacher: love the squirrel
May 4, 2017 12:39 am

windpoacher: nut's
May 4, 2017 12:39 am

May 4, 2017 12:39 am

John Barresi: elmo, did we make up any totally new moves?
May 4, 2017 12:39 am

John Barresi: Or just working on the rolling radars, slam dance, etc?
May 4, 2017 12:39 am

John Barresi: Brett has entered the building.
May 4, 2017 12:39 am

SparkieRob: G'day my brothers
May 4, 2017 12:39 am

John Barresi: *wild applause*
May 4, 2017 12:39 am

Flight Risk: What's up guys. Just got home. What's good in the hood
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

May 4, 2017 12:40 am

mystainedskin: does..."sexy dance"
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

riffclown: Hi Breet They've been talking about you..
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

John Barresi: Good, now someone can answer all the tailgater questions.
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

riffclown: Brett
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

John Barresi: Tailgunner dangit
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

Flight Risk: I'm sure they have
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

riffclown: dang keyboard.. acts like my kites..
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

John Barresi: Every position has it's challenges too.
May 4, 2017 12:40 am

John Barresi: Obviously lead kite is a whole other set of issues.
May 4, 2017 12:41 am

riffclown: types what I type instead of what I intend to type..
May 4, 2017 12:41 am

John Barresi: Tailgunner has to work their butt off to hide the slop, all the time.
May 4, 2017 12:41 am

John Barresi: However, 2 + 3 always get to drive through the holes, which is wicked fun.
May 4, 2017 12:41 am

riffclown: I noticed that when we were flying four and Scott was having to adjust to keep me looking good..
May 4, 2017 12:42 am

riffclown: ad to keep from knocking me out of the air..
May 4, 2017 12:43 am

SparkieRob: You guys do long line team super slick, do you have any plans for some short line street stuff? Considering you'll be in Detroit where the killer locations are.
May 4, 2017 12:43 am

dragonfish: Do you guys ever switch positions in line?
May 4, 2017 12:43 am

John Barresi: Not us, because every switch requires a slight rewire on timing and placement.
May 4, 2017 12:43 am

John Barresi: Nobody, and I mean nobody, flies as fast and accurately as us when we're tuned up.
May 4, 2017 12:43 am

Flight Risk: No, but coming up in grand haven Michigan I'll be leading a little bit
May 4, 2017 12:43 am

John Barresi: Changing order would have us rewiring each time.
May 4, 2017 12:44 am

John Barresi: That's true.
May 4, 2017 12:44 am

John Barresi: Also, the idea ultimately is for Brett to be able to take over lead and sub an alternate into #4 if I can't go somewhere.
May 4, 2017 12:44 am

Flight Risk: And you can always count on a great urban session with Detroit visitors
May 4, 2017 12:44 am

John Barresi: He has his own team in the midwest.
May 4, 2017 12:44 am

mystainedskin: RIff...that happens. My hardest thing learning line was speed control.
May 4, 2017 12:45 am

John Barresi: Scott, how much of that came down to riding the top of the handles, vs gripping in the fulcrum of the curve?
May 4, 2017 12:45 am

riffclown: I was having anough problems with
May 4, 2017 12:45 am

John Barresi: Or just technique
May 4, 2017 12:45 am

riffclown: UP
May 4, 2017 12:45 am

May 4, 2017 12:45 am

mystainedskin: For me or him?
May 4, 2017 12:45 am

John Barresi: For you.
May 4, 2017 12:46 am

windpoacher: a lot for me
May 4, 2017 12:46 am

mystainedskin: I still ride...proof at the top in the pic 1f61b.png
May 4, 2017 12:46 am

John Barresi: Yep, that's one of the big causes of speed problems.
May 4, 2017 12:47 am

May 4, 2017 12:47 am

John Barresi: Riding the top of the handle.
May 4, 2017 12:47 am

John Barresi: Which also takes us to the handles, curve discussion...
May 4, 2017 12:47 am

mystainedskin: Just flying with others..learning a pace and flow of what was happening was really hard for a long time. I still get tossed for a loop when flying with other teams
May 4, 2017 12:47 am

May 4, 2017 12:47 am

mystainedskin: pew..pew
May 4, 2017 12:47 am

May 4, 2017 12:47 am

May 4, 2017 12:47 am

John Barresi: Old steel Rev handles have some curve through the foam, allowing you to balance out a "center"... Rev Pro / snagless handles have little curve in the foam, with most of the angle change occurring below the foam, less fulcrum and more "bottom lever".
May 4, 2017 12:48 am

Flight Risk: Even the newer flyers can feel the difference immediately
May 4, 2017 12:49 am

riffclown: BTW, 13 in chat!!!
May 4, 2017 12:50 am

elmo264: today at work I found myself picking a certain maneuver and writing it down and then thinking of all the possible next maneuvers from there. and so on and so on. I find it most therapeutic
May 4, 2017 12:50 am

mystainedskin: Good exercise
May 4, 2017 12:50 am

May 4, 2017 12:51 am

mystainedskin: Mimic the hand positions throughout 1f609.png
May 4, 2017 12:51 am

May 4, 2017 12:51 am

riffclown: Another good exercise.. Maple Bacon Donuts..
May 4, 2017 12:52 am

John Barresi: Word.
May 4, 2017 12:52 am

May 4, 2017 12:52 am

elmo264: I am trying to wean myself into leading a group of people
May 4, 2017 12:52 am

windpoacher: dive , tuck and roll
May 4, 2017 12:52 am

John Barresi: Thinking about another leaders clinic soon.
May 4, 2017 12:52 am

mystainedskin: Go for it...learn together
May 4, 2017 12:52 am

mystainedskin: I like the old handles...but fly with whatever.
May 4, 2017 12:54 am

John Barresi: Mine are old handles, modded with pro tips.
May 4, 2017 12:55 am

mystainedskin: The first time I competed, I picked up Paul Lamasters high wind setup
May 4, 2017 12:55 am

mystainedskin: what...17"? 19" handles...some titanium ....great story
May 4, 2017 12:56 am

mystainedskin: I still fly stocks
May 4, 2017 12:56 am

SparkieRob: the stocks have a firmer feel to the foam imho and I like em.
May 4, 2017 12:57 am

Tristan: Hey sup homies
May 4, 2017 12:57 am

windpoacher: about time

May 4, 2017 12:58 am

Mikelp3586: Any of you guys fly traction? Or just duals and quads
May 4, 2017 12:59 am

windpoacher: yes , got a few
May 4, 2017 1:00 am

mystainedskin: Not much. I would more if I could afford it.
May 4, 2017 1:00 am

riffclown: BTW, I wanted to thank all of you once more for the opportunity to shoot the breez and talk about things that fly in it..
May 4, 2017 1:00 am

riffclown: Scott, Let me know what you want to fly, you can borrow from my bag if you'll just pay postage..
May 4, 2017 1:00 am

windpoacher: anytime, my friend
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

Mikelp3586: 👍
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

mystainedskin: Riff does also..
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

riffclown: Traction is my roots for kiting..
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

Tristan: I wanna get in to power kites
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

riffclown: little stuff came later..
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

Flight Risk: Eli likes to be thrown around with the big kites. I own a couple but they rarely get flown. I usually set up a couple of single lines and then go fly dual or quad
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

mystainedskin: I will get set up eventually.
May 4, 2017 1:01 am

Tristan: Who is this flight risk person
May 4, 2017 1:02 am

John Barresi: I've done traction, lots of sliding and jumping when I was a teenager, jumped a bus once, got about 35 hours in a buggy and 5 on a landboard, still not my bag.
May 4, 2017 1:02 am

mystainedskin: the short guy
May 4, 2017 1:02 am

John Barresi: Whoa, welcome Tristan. 1f600.png

mystainedskin: He is out drooling on his bike
May 4, 2017 1:02 am

Tristan: Its good to be hanging out. 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 1:03 am

Tristan: Thinking about doing some flying tonight
May 4, 2017 1:03 am

Flight Risk: i am. lol. chatting in the garage staring at the new bike 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 1:03 am

Tristan: Who else is
May 4, 2017 1:03 am

mystainedskin: Maybe some gliding
May 4, 2017 1:03 am

riffclown: had a fun moment with a baby stroller and an 8M Toxic a few weekends back..
May 4, 2017 1:04 am

Tristan: Imagine if this had video chat..
May 4, 2017 1:04 am

Mark Thorn: It's nice out... I'll be out there on the street tonight
May 4, 2017 1:04 am

windpoacher: lol, love it
May 4, 2017 1:04 am

Mikelp3586: Nothing like holding onto a semi
May 4, 2017 1:04 am

riffclown: flew the toxic on a low pass between the stroller and the parents..
May 4, 2017 1:04 am

Flight Risk: its getting cold here but i may just go tear up the neighborhood for a bit
May 4, 2017 1:05 am

Tristan: Ill prob just hit up the local park tonight
May 4, 2017 1:05 am

riffclown: realized how close I was and gave to the kite to avoid disaster..
May 4, 2017 1:05 am

May 4, 2017 1:05 am

windpoacher: good choice

May 4, 2017 1:05 am

Flight Risk: I've had a couple of moments like that.....fun
May 4, 2017 1:05 am

riffclown: If I'd yanked it, there would have been trouble..
May 4, 2017 1:05 am

riffclown: lesson learned and no one except me felt the danger..
May 4, 2017 1:06 am

John Barresi: Evening Segel!
May 4, 2017 1:06 am

May 4, 2017 1:06 am

John Barresi: Again folks, don't be shy with questions about the team, members, or any related kite topic. 1f609.png
May 4, 2017 1:06 am

mystainedskin: I am sure you felt the danger ...lesson learned
May 4, 2017 1:07 am

windpoacher: anything goes , chime in  1f609.png
May 4, 2017 1:07 am

mystainedskin: How many kites can Eli fly while eating a Triple stack burger topped with a sausage dog?
May 4, 2017 1:07 am

May 4, 2017 1:08 am

May 4, 2017 1:08 am

khsidekick: Lol
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

windpoacher: one being a single line
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

SparkieRob: Lol
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

John Barresi: FYI - I'm probably good for another 20 minutes or so before I have to go finish packing for my trip to see khsidekick in Colorado tomorrow. 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

mystainedskin: Good answer
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

Flight Risk: depends on if that sausage is polish
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

mystainedskin: Sweet...safe travels
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

khsidekick: 🙃
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

John Barresi: See, already speechless. 1f603.png
May 4, 2017 1:08 am

May 4, 2017 1:09 am

SegelFlieger: Hello. How did Team KiteLife come together? are you all located in the same geographic area?
May 4, 2017 1:09 am

SparkieRob: Do you plan to get "matching" team kites or keep with the individual nature?
May 4, 2017 1:09 am

John Barresi: I actually hired all these guys from a stripper convention.
May 4, 2017 1:09 am

mystainedskin: OOO...double
May 4, 2017 1:09 am

mystainedskin: He was throwing change

John Barresi: I'll handle the kite.

mystainedskin: How? it just happened.
May 4, 2017 1:10 am

Flight Risk: We are in absolute opposite corners of the country so there was some magic involved to gather this group
May 4, 2017 1:11 am

windpoacher: located in Portland , florida Michigan Medford oregon
May 4, 2017 1:11 am

riffclown: Sparkie Rob, I know of at least one matched set that is in the works for TKL..
May 4, 2017 1:11 am

SegelFlieger: Wow. so how do you get together to practice?

windpoacher: we don't
May 4, 2017 1:11 am

riffclown: looking forward to video..
May 4, 2017 1:11 am

John Barresi: Ok, ok... Me and Eli have been friends for a few years now by way of NW festivals, clinics, etc... I met Scott at one of my clinics in FL, and Brett I met for a private lesson in Detroit... Honestly, I watched these guys develop from early on and cherry picked them, despite the fact two of us are in Oregon, one in Florida and the other in Michigan.
May 4, 2017 1:12 am

mystainedskin: No practice other than the moments prior too events
May 4, 2017 1:12 am

John Barresi: As for team kites, we are working toward matched sets with individualized color trims... Looks like a team, but carries solo colors.
May 4, 2017 1:12 am

John Barresi: Yep.
May 4, 2017 1:12 am

John Barresi: We had 12 days in TX in Feb...
May 4, 2017 1:12 am

John Barresi: We'll have a week or so this month in Michigan...
May 4, 2017 1:13 am

Flight Risk: I do get lots of practice leading team SkyFX here in michigan. So I at least keep all the moves fresh in the brain
May 4, 2017 1:13 am

John Barresi: Then another few days at AKA Convention in Maryland this October.
May 4, 2017 1:13 am

John Barresi: Eli is in the sticks, team-wise, but hoping to get more flight time with him in the coming year.
May 4, 2017 1:13 am

riffclown: Scott, sent you a privte message with video link
May 4, 2017 1:13 am

riffclown: now I gotta go to the AKA convention..
May 4, 2017 1:14 am

John Barresi: Gonna be a howl. 1f600.png
May 4, 2017 1:14 am

Flight Risk: Poor scott and eli get thrown right into it every gathering and have to pick it back up at a stellar rate as TKL flys at a fast pace. I tip my hat to those boys
May 4, 2017 1:14 am

May 4, 2017 1:14 am

John Barresi: We're also giving a "Quad team 101" workshop on the beach at AKA, as well as a normal indoor workshop there.
May 4, 2017 1:14 am

John Barresi: True dat, those guys have to rebuild every time.
May 4, 2017 1:15 am

mystainedskin: Well.I am a solo flier. Never get any team unless around you guys or Weider
May 4, 2017 1:15 am

Flight Risk: mmmm, sexy. That was so much fun...epic
May 4, 2017 1:16 am

SegelFlieger: That's amazing about practicing just before events. Are your routines based on the live calls then?
May 4, 2017 1:16 am

: Good to hear about the "Quad team 101" at the AKA. I'll be there!
May 4, 2017 1:16 am

Flight Risk: not this year sadly
May 4, 2017 1:17 am

John Barresi: FYI everyone, the "ghost user" without a name is Tom W, definitely a friendly, just something quirky occurred with his registration so it let him in but didn't create a real profile.
May 4, 2017 1:17 am

May 4, 2017 1:18 am

mystainedskin: Howdy
May 4, 2017 1:18 am

photomom: You want identity or numbers?
May 25, 2017 12:02 am

kenmcneill: Well, there are enough of them still out there that we can reconstruct it
May 25, 2017 12:02 am

Craig Rodgerson: identity
May 25, 2017 12:02 am

kenmcneill: I do better with names than handles, if that's OK
May 25, 2017 12:02 am

John Barresi: Maybe I could bribe you to give it some love?
May 25, 2017 12:03 am

May 25, 2017 12:05 am

riffclown: I'm Rob from Yorktown.. We've crossed paths a few times. Atlantic Coast kite Festival in Va Beach, etc...
May 25, 2017 12:05 am

Craig Rodgerson: Ken, Is there an easy way to do a good solid CURVED line when drawing a template? I am experimenting with .080 carbon tacked to cardboard and bent and taped at ends.
May 25, 2017 12:05 am

kenmcneill: Hi Rob!
May 25, 2017 12:05 am

kenmcneill: Do you want a constant curve?
May 25, 2017 12:06 am

kenmcneill: I've fount that if you use a bent stick, it is flatter at the ends for some reason
May 25, 2017 12:07 am

kenmcneill: found
May 25, 2017 12:07 am

kenmcneill: Which is OK for most of the times I've done it, as I like a flatter entrance to a curved hem, which is what I've use it for most
May 25, 2017 12:09 am

photomom: Have you seen the metal template that is a series of circles of various sizes?
May 25, 2017 12:09 am

John Barresi: I'm not much of a kite maker but I've wondered about that myself, curves confound me.
May 25, 2017 12:09 am

photomom: The circles are arranged in a spiral.
May 25, 2017 12:09 am

Tristan: Hey guys
May 25, 2017 12:09 am

kenmcneill: If you want a true radius, a piece of string makes a good compass
May 25, 2017 12:09 am

John Barresi: I've seen it, made by Windfire Designs.
May 25, 2017 12:09 am

John Barresi: Evening Tristan.
May 25, 2017 12:10 am

kenmcneill: Hey Tristan
May 25, 2017 12:10 am

photomom: I've been wondering where to get one.
May 25, 2017 12:10 am

Craig Rodgerson: that seems to work for me...I can't keep counting on Simon doing a cad rendering and having it printed as a Blueprint at Staples
May 25, 2017 12:10 am

May 25, 2017 12:10 am

kenmcneill: You're quicker that me John!
May 25, 2017 12:10 am

photomom: Thanks. Circles are the hardest for me.
May 25, 2017 12:11 am

John Barresi: Web resources is what I do. 1f600.png
May 25, 2017 12:11 am

John Barresi: Happy to help!
May 25, 2017 12:11 am

kenmcneill: Craig, two questions. #1 - what are you making. #2 why does it need to be so precise?
May 25, 2017 12:11 am

kenmcneill: Close is more than close enough at 100 ft
May 25, 2017 12:12 am

John Barresi: What about a trailing edge that isn't circle based? Or something like a Rev leading edge?
May 25, 2017 12:13 am

kenmcneill: Hi T in WI
May 25, 2017 12:13 am

John Barresi: Curved, but not circular.
May 25, 2017 12:13 am

kenmcneill: Example JB?
May 25, 2017 12:13 am

T in WI: Hello Ken, thank you for taking time to chat with us tonight
May 25, 2017 12:13 am

kenmcneill: Are you familiar with the acronym TLAR?
May 25, 2017 12:14 am

Craig Rodgerson: Kroonbox by Jan Grandia...it doesnt need to be precise...just a long line with about 1/2 to 1" arc
May 25, 2017 12:14 am

riffclown: For that you can place Archery Nocks in the end of a LE and tighten line between the ends.. Once you get the curve you want use the LE like you would a straight edge..
May 25, 2017 12:14 am

John Barresi: Like a Jordan Pro trailing edge, pretty curved as I recall, but not part of a circle, more shallow.
May 25, 2017 12:14 am

kenmcneill: Thanks for joining, so far, so good T
May 25, 2017 12:14 am

May 25, 2017 12:14 am

John Barresi: (re type, not brand)
May 25, 2017 12:15 am

John Barresi: Aha, gotcha Riff, that's a familiar tactic.
May 25, 2017 12:15 am

kenmcneill: What I like to do with rod-based curves, is to use the rod itself as an outline
May 25, 2017 12:15 am

photomom: Makes me think of the trailing edge of a Dunton-Taylor box kite.
May 25, 2017 12:16 am

Craig Rodgerson: As part of a circle...these are 20 foot radius with only 24" to 36" used in arc
May 25, 2017 12:16 am

May 25, 2017 12:16 am

riffclown: gives you a nice parabolic arc..
May 25, 2017 12:16 am

John Barresi: Evening Sean, Wayne. 1f600.png
May 25, 2017 12:16 am

kenmcneill: pin the top, pin the opposite side where the spreader goes, and then pin the tip for your curve.
May 25, 2017 12:17 am

Deke Haid: Good evening from Chicagoland/Naperville
May 25, 2017 12:17 am

kenmcneill: draw your line, cut your template
May 25, 2017 12:17 am

kenmcneill: Hi Deke!
May 25, 2017 12:17 am

Wayne Dowler: change of subject - ever thought of making an indoor specific 61/49?
May 25, 2017 12:18 am

kenmcneill: Craig, TLAR is my rule of thumb
May 25, 2017 12:18 am

Global: kenmcneill has been made a moderator by John Barresi.
May 25, 2017 12:19 am

Deke Haid: Ken. I've been looking at your work for years without knowing who made them. Quite the touch, sir.
May 25, 2017 12:19 am

Craig Rodgerson: sounds good ken...the curve on the drum boxes keep it tight
May 25, 2017 12:20 am

kenmcneill: I had a very good kitemaker tell me once at a class that the best thing I did all weekend was to make him put his ruler away.
May 25, 2017 12:20 am

kenmcneill: Thanks Deke.
May 25, 2017 12:21 am

riffclown: Most kite designs are surprisingly forgiving.. to a point...
May 25, 2017 12:21 am

Craig Rodgerson: symmetry is somewhat important on single lines on edges
May 25, 2017 12:22 am

riffclown: yes and weight
May 25, 2017 12:22 am

kenmcneill: Us old guys will tell you how forgiving they are, and how much damage you can do to a kite before you kill it
May 25, 2017 12:22 am

riffclown: but a mistake made on one side and copied to the other becomes a design feature..
May 25, 2017 12:23 am

kenmcneill: SLK's are much harder that stunt kites IMO
May 25, 2017 12:23 am

photomom: Really?
May 25, 2017 12:23 am

kenmcneill: A while new set of rules!
May 25, 2017 12:23 am

May 25, 2017 12:23 am

John Barresi: Even with my small amount of kite making experience and 27 years of sport kite, I'd agree.
May 25, 2017 12:23 am

riffclown: agreed.. SLKs don't have your hands and controls to balance out the imprfections..
May 25, 2017 12:23 am

kenmcneill: With SLKs, it's physics
May 25, 2017 12:24 am

photomom: I've always been afraid to try making a dual line because of the symmetry involved.
May 25, 2017 12:24 am

May 25, 2017 12:24 am

riffclown: the more lines you have to control it, the less "balanced" it needs to be..
May 25, 2017 12:24 am

kenmcneill: with a stunt kite, you balance the flaws pretty unconsciously most of the time
May 25, 2017 12:25 am

photomom: I guess that's why my first quad build actually flew.
May 25, 2017 12:25 am

Wayne Dowler: case in point - look at a 20th anny Rev
May 25, 2017 12:25 am

Deke Haid: LOL
May 25, 2017 12:25 am

kenmcneill: If youre interested in SLK design, subscribe to Peter Lynn's blog
May 25, 2017 12:25 am

riffclown: that's why kites like the Scimitar look strange but also fly well..
May 25, 2017 12:25 am

May 25, 2017 12:26 am

May 25, 2017 12:27 am

kenmcneill: There are all sorts of things that will or will not fly, that your logic and experience tell you otherwise
May 25, 2017 12:27 am

Wayne Dowler: been after Patrick Tan to upsize his iFlites, not make them smaller! Also have one of CeeWan's MegaPlutz kites. all nice indoor rides
May 25, 2017 12:28 am

riffclown: Karen I saw your first build up close.. It was nice work all around..
May 25, 2017 12:28 am

kenmcneill: Somebody asked about an indoor 61/49?
May 25, 2017 12:28 am

May 25, 2017 12:28 am

photomom: Thank you.
May 25, 2017 12:28 am

kenmcneill: never really thought about it, I like flying outdoors ;-)
May 25, 2017 12:29 am

Wayne Dowler: love that look
May 25, 2017 12:29 am

Wayne Dowler: I'm into larger indoor kites, not smaller. Better visuals
May 25, 2017 12:30 am

kenmcneill: There have been a couple people play with it, but I never really heard glowing results, so I'm guessing they were less that stellar
May 25, 2017 12:30 am

Wayne Dowler: bummer
May 25, 2017 12:30 am

kenmcneill: Maybe one of these days
May 25, 2017 12:30 am

Wayne Dowler: we can hope!!!
May 25, 2017 12:30 am

kenmcneill: I just recently got it to fly pretty well on its own!
May 25, 2017 12:31 am

kenmcneill: Off a single point at the top point
May 25, 2017 12:31 am

Wayne Dowler: Don't do a lot of SLKs outside, just indoors along with a Rev
May 25, 2017 12:32 am

kenmcneill: Does this weird thing with the sail. Sort of a reflex billow
May 25, 2017 12:32 am

kenmcneill: Lower sails billow towards you
May 25, 2017 12:32 am

Wayne Dowler: front sail or rear
May 25, 2017 12:32 am

Wayne Dowler: answered
May 25, 2017 12:33 am

Wayne Dowler: slot muit have an effect on them
May 25, 2017 12:33 am

Wayne Dowler: must
May 25, 2017 12:33 am

photomom: I'm having a problem picturing this.
May 25, 2017 12:33 am

photomom: Any images?
May 25, 2017 12:34 am

kenmcneill: Upper sails (jibs?) are pulled in tight, and they create a narrow slot that accelerates and directs the airflow
May 25, 2017 12:34 am

kenmcneill: Can I post a pic John, or should I link?
May 25, 2017 12:34 am

John Barresi: Both are ok, image is 2MB limit.
May 25, 2017 12:35 am

Wayne Dowler: 61/49 has 4 sails - 2 front, 2 rear and 1 keel
May 25, 2017 12:35 am

May 25, 2017 12:35 am

riffclown: What's your take on some of the kinetic kitework? Moving parts and all as part of the design.. And have you experimented with those concepts??
May 25, 2017 12:36 am

Wayne Dowler: come to papa
May 25, 2017 12:36 am

photomom: Thanks for the visual. I get it now.
May 25, 2017 12:36 am

khsidekick: That looks awesome
May 25, 2017 12:36 am

kenmcneill: The wind comes over the upper sails, through the slot and reflex shapes the lower sails. A surprising amount of pull, and a high angle of flight
May 25, 2017 12:37 am

Wayne Dowler: I played with the colorizer so much I ended up more confused at the end!
May 25, 2017 12:37 am

kenmcneill: Most 1-pointer will want to wash back, but I stumbled on this, and it sure seems to work
May 25, 2017 12:38 am

kenmcneill: Give me three colors, and I'll send you pretty pictures
May 25, 2017 12:38 am

kenmcneill: That's why I don't do colorizers anymore Wayne. ;-)
May 25, 2017 12:39 am

Wayne Dowler: blue, blue, and more blue. maybe a little yellow for contrast
May 25, 2017 12:40 am

May 25, 2017 12:40 am

kenmcneill: No, I've not played with kinetics. Very cool though
May 25, 2017 12:40 am

kenmcneill: Drop me a line sometime WD 1f600.png
May 25, 2017 12:41 am

Wayne Dowler: they do make the kite interesting
May 25, 2017 12:41 am

Wayne Dowler: 10-4
May 25, 2017 12:41 am

John Barresi: Evening Edmond. 1f600.png
May 25, 2017 12:42 am

kenmcneill: Right now, I'm back to basics. Trying to retrain the old stunt kite brain
May 25, 2017 12:42 am

kenmcneill: Hi Edmond
May 25, 2017 12:42 am

John Barresi: Stunt kite brain?
May 25, 2017 12:43 am

John Barresi: *intrigued*
May 25, 2017 12:43 am

kenmcneill: This transition has been a challenge at times
May 25, 2017 12:43 am

Wayne Dowler: quad maybe??
May 25, 2017 12:43 am

John Barresi: There is a real shortage of good cottage made sport kites in the USA right now.
May 25, 2017 12:43 am

Flight Risk: Hi Ken! How we doing tonight? Are you coming back to Lyon township in a couple weeks?
May 25, 2017 12:43 am

photomom: Working on a new 3D design?
May 25, 2017 12:43 am

John Barresi: Flight Risk = Brett Marchel
May 25, 2017 12:44 am

kenmcneill: Design wise
May 25, 2017 12:44 am

kenmcneill: HI Brett! Yes, I'll see you in about a week and a half!
May 25, 2017 12:44 am

photomom: Or a single plane design?
May 25, 2017 12:44 am

kenmcneill: I have something on the drawing board that I think can be fun
May 25, 2017 12:45 am

Flight Risk: Awesome! Its been far too long since I've gotten a good conversation with you on the field. It'll be great to see you again
May 25, 2017 12:45 am

kenmcneill: Sort of a compound shaped wing with a cellular tail section
May 25, 2017 12:46 am

Craig Rodgerson: I got a chance to see the Fire and Ice kites you made. Nice work on a familiar platform
May 25, 2017 12:46 am

photomom: Boggles the mind.
May 25, 2017 12:46 am

kenmcneill: Being designed, at least partly as a workshop kite for U-Make in IL, and (maybe) Ft. Worden
May 25, 2017 12:46 am

photomom: Someday I'd like to make it to one of those workshops.
May 25, 2017 12:47 am

photomom: Illinois most likely.
May 25, 2017 12:47 am

kenmcneill: Mine too Karen. I can't quite see it, so I guess I just need to start cutting
May 25, 2017 12:47 am

Deke Haid: where in Illinois?
May 25, 2017 12:47 am

Flight Risk: I'm planning for IL. Sadly missed it last winner
May 25, 2017 12:48 am

kenmcneill: There is no reason not to have workshops and classes i your own back yard (figuratively)
May 25, 2017 12:48 am

Wayne Dowler: Gotta drop out - dinner time with wife! CYA and Thanks!!
May 25, 2017 12:48 am

kenmcneill: I hope to see you In IL, be there's nothing to say it can't happen closer to home
May 25, 2017 12:49 am

kenmcneill: C Ya Wayne, thinks for stopping in
May 25, 2017 12:49 am

photomom: Except having people with the expertise and the resources to put it together.
May 25, 2017 12:49 am

John Barresi: Good night Wayne!
May 25, 2017 12:50 am

T in WI: Wait, what??? Ken are you planning 2018 U-Make instructor?
May 25, 2017 12:50 am

kenmcneill: Kiting doesn't have to be some big organized, overproduced affair
May 25, 2017 12:50 am

Mikelp3586: Hey all just checking in, evening ken.
May 25, 2017 12:51 am

John Barresi: Reminder folks, you can check out Ken's web presence at these URLs... https://kmacfab.com https://www.facebook.com/kmacfab/

Mikelp3586: Mike, INdiana
May 25, 2017 12:51 am

kenmcneill: Hi Mike
May 25, 2017 12:51 am

John Barresi: Evening Mike. 1f600.png
May 25, 2017 12:51 am

kenmcneill: The best parts of kites happens one on one, local
May 25, 2017 12:52 am

riffclown: 1000000000% Agreed..
May 25, 2017 12:53 am

kenmcneill: There are a dozen master class builders, within a couple hours of you, including yourself Karen
May 25, 2017 12:53 am

John Barresi: Agreed.
May 25, 2017 12:53 am

Craig Rodgerson: Can a Reprise tail be built and retrofitted on the top of an Ichiban?
May 25, 2017 12:53 am

Deke Haid: Just looked up UMake. Too close to home NOT to go
May 25, 2017 12:53 am

photomom: You give me too much credit.
May 25, 2017 12:53 am

kenmcneill: A couple card tables in the garage, add some cold beverages and some friends, you've got a workshop
May 25, 2017 12:54 am

Mikelp3586: sounds fun
May 25, 2017 12:54 am

riffclown: Ken, I'm in Virginia, We WILL cross paths at some point again.. always eager to learn...
May 25, 2017 12:54 am

kenmcneill: Not at all, I've seen your work, and you have a lot to offer
May 25, 2017 12:54 am

photomom: I can tell you've never seen our garage. LOL
May 25, 2017 12:54 am

riffclown: The Applique on you Banana Quad is first rate..
May 25, 2017 12:55 am

photomom: Thank you.
May 25, 2017 12:55 am

kenmcneill: three buddies with a boombox of a Sunday afternoon sure sounds like a competition league or a flight seminar to me!!!
May 25, 2017 12:56 am

Deke Haid: Banana Quad is Photomom's? I love that kite!
May 25, 2017 12:56 am

riffclown: :D Told Ya!!!
May 25, 2017 12:56 am

May 25, 2017 12:56 am

Craig Rodgerson: swapping trophies?
May 25, 2017 12:56 am

photomom: Yes. It goes with the Monion costume.
May 25, 2017 12:56 am

kenmcneill: Old bowling trophies!
May 25, 2017 12:57 am

kenmcneill: winner gets a free beer (or other)
May 25, 2017 12:57 am

photomom: I've got a couple of golf ones to throw in.
May 25, 2017 12:57 am

photomom: That is if I can find them in the garage.
May 25, 2017 12:58 am

riffclown: My only golf trophy was most balls lost in a single round..
May 25, 2017 12:58 am

riffclown: I thought thats how we kept score..
May 25, 2017 12:58 am

kenmcneill: Somewhere along the way, kiting became a much too serious thing for many of us, myself included
May 25, 2017 12:58 am

Mikelp3586: And the wallet
May 25, 2017 12:58 am

photomom: Here! Here!
May 25, 2017 12:59 am

kenmcneill: You want a workshop close to you, make it happen
May 25, 2017 12:59 am

kenmcneill: it doesn't need to be a production
May 25, 2017 12:59 am

riffclown: I sent Gomberg pics of the kites I made with his kite tails.. He thought I sent him the wrong picture at first..
May 25, 2017 12:59 am

John Barresi: That's been my tact with the quad clinics. 1f44d.png
May 25, 2017 12:59 am

John Barresi: Just make it happen.
May 25, 2017 12:59 am

kenmcneill: JB, what did you like about Antelope Island?
May 25, 2017 12:59 am

John Barresi: I liked the freedom of the event, almost zero fixed demos, mostly flying and roving with the people.
May 25, 2017 1:00 am

John Barresi: That, and for a commercial festival venture, the GREAT combination of attractions like kites, live music, BMX bikes, etc.
May 25, 2017 1:00 am

John Barresi: But the kite festival had very, very little infrastructure.
May 25, 2017 1:01 am

John Barresi: Basically show up, be smart, and fly.
May 25, 2017 1:01 am

kenmcneill: Some of the best kitemakers and fliers on the planet. No schedules, no performance plan.
May 25, 2017 1:01 am

John Barresi: Camping onsite was good too, toasting out the evening with friends and tipping coffee in the morning too.
May 25, 2017 1:01 am

photomom: Ohhh. Sounds good.
May 25, 2017 1:01 am

Mikelp3586: Sounds like a good festival
May 25, 2017 1:01 am

kenmcneill: You get creative, talented, enthusiastic people together, they're going to show off for each other
May 25, 2017 1:02 am

May 25, 2017 1:02 am

May 25, 2017 1:02 am

John Barresi: Reminds me of my TKL crew. hahah
May 25, 2017 1:02 am

kenmcneill: The bystanders just happen to get a hell of a show as a result
May 25, 2017 1:02 am

kenmcneill: I'm sorry, I pulled pretty far away from design and building. ;-)
May 25, 2017 1:03 am

photomom: No problem here.
May 25, 2017 1:03 am

John Barresi: There's no limit to topics, long as they're in good taste. 1f600.png
May 25, 2017 1:03 am

Deke Haid: TKL killed it this weekend
May 25, 2017 1:04 am

Craig Rodgerson: Can a Reprise tail be built and retrofitted on the top of an Ichiban?
May 25, 2017 1:04 am

kenmcneill: Absolutely Craig
May 25, 2017 1:04 am

kenmcneill: You coming to Lyon?
May 25, 2017 1:04 am

Deke Haid: Build question: Which needle is prefered? rounded or point?
May 25, 2017 1:04 am

John Barresi: Good evening Lynn. 1f600.png
May 25, 2017 1:05 am

Craig Rodgerson: No on Lyon...family commitment
May 25, 2017 1:05 am

Craig Rodgerson: maybe Sunday
May 25, 2017 1:05 am

Lynn Gray Pugh: Good evening John
May 25, 2017 1:05 am

kenmcneill: Oh, that's right. We'll be together in spirit my friend
May 25, 2017 1:05 am

Craig Rodgerson: I am putting up her Ichiban
May 25, 2017 1:06 am

Craig Rodgerson: over the picnic
May 25, 2017 1:06 am

May 25, 2017 1:06 am

kenmcneill: Drop me a line on the Ichi/Rep question sometime
May 25, 2017 1:07 am

Craig Rodgerson: Familiar set of colors...Gillard got the original if I am not mistaken
May 25, 2017 1:07 am

kenmcneill: Yes he did. He said he had to enlist a whole team oh hotshots to put the darn thing together
May 25, 2017 1:09 am

John Barresi: Well folks, we've breezed through our official Direct Line chat hour... In respect to Ken's time and participation, can I solicit any last second questions for him? Ken, any other useful links or news these folks might like to keep an eye on?
May 25, 2017 1:11 am

kenmcneill: So, my words of advice, throw away your rulebooks, your plans, and your rulers. Build it loose. Have fun. You learn more from trying and potentially failing than winning easily.
May 25, 2017 1:12 am

photomom: Thanks so much, Ken!
May 25, 2017 1:12 am

riffclown: I very much appreciate the time and wisdoms you've shared with us.. Thank you for committing to this event..
May 25, 2017 1:12 am

photomom: Enjoyed the chat.
May 25, 2017 1:12 am

Deke Haid: Thanks Ken.
May 25, 2017 1:12 am

John Barresi: Hear hear, greatly enjoyed it!
May 25, 2017 1:13 am

May 25, 2017 1:13 am

kenmcneill: Thank you Karen. call me when you want to do a workshop on the coast
May 25, 2017 1:13 am

Lynn Gray Pugh: Thanks for your time.
May 25, 2017 1:13 am

Craig Rodgerson: Ken, you are a tape technician. You ever use fabric glue...Guterman?
May 25, 2017 1:13 am

kenmcneill: Thanks everybody! Don't be stangers!!
May 25, 2017 1:13 am

kenmcneill: Craig, I have played with it a little, and am really pleased with the results
May 25, 2017 1:14 am

Craig Rodgerson: Grant told me he has had good results...and Christian swears by it...I got to give it a try
May 25, 2017 1:15 am

kenmcneill: The kites I did for Fire and Ice used the Gutermann glue. Cool stull
May 25, 2017 1:15 am

kenmcneill: stuff
May 25, 2017 1:15 am

kenmcneill: Night all, thanks John

riffclown: I'd like to ask a follow up question from one of the meetings at the AKA convention.. it got talked about but never really answered.. Where do you see the future of multiline and dual line precision headed?? Incorporated into the individual ballet? Eliminated altogether? or remaining pretty much as is??
Nov 9, 2017 1:31 am

mystainedskin: Cool..
Nov 9, 2017 1:32 am

Flash: Hi everyone!!!
Nov 9, 2017 1:32 am

John Barresi: One of my favorite topics.
Nov 9, 2017 1:32 am

Flash: Awesome first question!!!!
Nov 9, 2017 1:32 am

photomom: Got kicked off. Sorry. Hello!
Nov 9, 2017 1:33 am

John Barresi: wb Karen
Nov 9, 2017 1:33 am

mystainedskin: ...wb
Nov 9, 2017 1:33 am

Flash: hmmm, well i will give two perspectives so bare with me. From a sport kite fliers perspective or the competitors perspective I think that there is value in it. I have heard from several fliers that it does serve a purpose (honestly I am trying to see how it serves a UNIQUE purpose as a stand alone)
Nov 9, 2017 1:33 am

riffclown: for folks like will Smoot it is a life blood.. He spends a lot of time announcing so it allows him a niche to relax and compete in..
Nov 9, 2017 1:34 am

Flash: from the competitors perspective however, outside of perhaps the national competition, or a friendly hot tricks style shoot out, I am not sure that it has much value as a stand alone discipline anymore
Nov 9, 2017 1:34 am

John Barresi: And for clarity Nic, who actually researches and proposes changes to sport kite competition format in the US?
Nov 9, 2017 1:35 am

Flash: from an audience/festival perspective it serves no purpose unless you figure out a way to get the public involved in. Say get ALL of the precision fliers out on the field at the same time and have a 'shoot out'.
Nov 9, 2017 1:36 am

Flash: I know it is a touchy subject because there are a lot of people that are heavily invested in the competition the way it is
Nov 9, 2017 1:36 am

riffclown: So do you think extending the ballet and adding Mandatory precision pattern to the performance is the next step??
Nov 9, 2017 1:36 am

John Barresi: Evening Jason.
Nov 9, 2017 1:36 am

RaginCajun: Hiya all!
Nov 9, 2017 1:37 am

riffclown: and for the record I don't compete (personal reasons) but I care deeply for a lot of friends that do..
Nov 9, 2017 1:37 am

Flash: but, as we all know, competition has been dying. We simply do not have the numbers we had before. So we really need to look at how to change things, not just change a tweak here... or a tweak there... more like.... 'if it was completely new, how would we do it'. Don't take that as I want to throw everything out, it is more a mindset thing. For example... I have yet to hear a good solid justification for all of the disciplines we do have other than 'that is the way it has always been done"
Nov 9, 2017 1:38 am

RaginCajun: Personally I don't compete, but do enjoy watching the competitions.
Nov 9, 2017 1:38 am

Flash: whew so many questions to answer.....i better type faster
Nov 9, 2017 1:38 am

riffclown: take your time..
Nov 9, 2017 1:38 am

riffclown: mine was more like multiple choice (aka multi discipline)
Nov 9, 2017 1:39 am

Global: riffclown has had their moderator status taken away by John Barresi.
Nov 9, 2017 1:40 am

Global: SparkieRob has had their moderator status taken away by John Barresi.
Nov 9, 2017 1:40 am

Flash: I will get back to the announcing thing in a second, that is another aspect. as for proposals. ANYONE. The way that I run the committees is at the start of the year i take a complitaion of suggestions and project proposals and flush them out and hand them over to the committee to figure out. Last years was from talking to about 30+ different sport kite competitors, gleaning through countless interviews, surveys etc.... and then asking people outside of our community
Nov 9, 2017 1:40 am

John Barresi: Just taking others off mod, so Nic's replies stand out alone in bold.
Nov 9, 2017 1:40 am

riffclown:
Nov 9, 2017 1:40 am

photomom: And here I thought riff was a bad boy. LOL
Nov 9, 2017 1:41 am

Flash: as for combining ballet and precision.... i am not against it. speeds up the time on the field and speeds up downtime (KILLER for event organizers and audience interest) however......
Nov 9, 2017 1:41 am

Flash: Why does precision need to be at a competition
Nov 9, 2017 1:41 am

riffclown: I am a bad boy..
Nov 9, 2017 1:41 am

riffclown: it just doesn't show
Nov 9, 2017 1:41 am

John Barresi: Seems to me one of the biggest obstacles for experienced fliers competing is the time investment on competition days.
Nov 9, 2017 1:42 am

photomom: But wouldn't combining ballet and pecision kill the fluidity of ballet?
Nov 9, 2017 1:42 am

riffclown: Precision is the only discipline that isn't 100% subjective..
Nov 9, 2017 1:42 am

John Barresi: 4-5 hours of work for 10 minutes of flight.
Nov 9, 2017 1:42 am

riffclown: that is a danger yes.
Nov 9, 2017 1:42 am

John Barresi: The format was created to support (and be staffed by) 100+ fliers.
Nov 9, 2017 1:43 am

Flash: because from an audience perspective (not an informed kite flier that knows the ropes) you guys are just flopping about and it makes little sense. Don't take that as an insult, it is perspective from the festival organizer.
Nov 9, 2017 1:43 am

Flash: and trust me, as someone who has spent years playing competitive sports I know how frustrating this next sentence sounds......
Nov 9, 2017 1:43 am

Flash: competition is for the audience.... winning is for the competitor
Nov 9, 2017 1:44 am

Flash: we have all collectively kind of forgot that competition was started to sell product and engage the audience.
Nov 9, 2017 1:44 am

riffclown: no insult taken.. and I agree.. but from the audience perspective a LOT of what we do is "trying to get it to fly right"
Nov 9, 2017 1:44 am

photomom: Makes perfect sense to me.
Nov 9, 2017 1:44 am

riffclown: the main draws a festival are big kites, kites with long tails and kite stack..
Nov 9, 2017 1:45 am

riffclown: everything else seems to be just a kite..
Nov 9, 2017 1:45 am

John Barresi: teams
Nov 9, 2017 1:45 am

John Barresi: loud kites
Nov 9, 2017 1:45 am

riffclown: true and true
Nov 9, 2017 1:45 am

photomom: And performances to music.
Nov 9, 2017 1:45 am

John Barresi: Interpretable performances to music. lol
Nov 9, 2017 1:46 am

photomom: Tricking seems to confuse a lot of the audience because they don't recognize the moves.
Nov 9, 2017 1:46 am

John Barresi: Evening Wayne.
Nov 9, 2017 1:46 am

riffclown: exactly
Nov 9, 2017 1:46 am

riffclown: and they don't understand the skills needed to accomplish the moves
Nov 9, 2017 1:46 am

John Barresi: Which goes back to announcing.
Nov 9, 2017 1:46 am

Flash: right now our announcers are really good at announcing for us..... not so much for the audience.
Nov 9, 2017 1:47 am

John Barresi: Thats an inherent problem though, having bodies who can talk and lead listeners through the set up in interesting ways.
Nov 9, 2017 1:47 am

riffclown: Terry Murray was a Master at that approach.
Nov 9, 2017 1:48 am

Flash: As an outside reference, we just had the Roller derby championships in Philly. The announcers we all know and love where there on the track.
Nov 9, 2017 1:48 am

RaginCajun: Exactly, when I watch a dual line pilot doing tricks, I know what they're doing, trying to do, etc. but the random audience member won't get it, and could get bored by it, not taking into consideration the immense skills required to do what they're watching.
Nov 9, 2017 1:48 am

Flash: The ones that the general public heard on ESPN, talked differently
Nov 9, 2017 1:48 am

Wayne Dowler: just catching up on what has gone on before I got here. Howdy all.
Nov 9, 2017 1:48 am

RaginCajun: Sup Wayne
Nov 9, 2017 1:49 am

Wayne Dowler:
Nov 9, 2017 1:49 am

riffclown: I'll quieten down and let others get a word in.. but wanted to broach that subject because I know it is near and dear to many friends of mine..
Nov 9, 2017 1:49 am

mystainedskin: So how would you bring people into sport kiting without something at events?
Nov 9, 2017 1:50 am

Flash: if the sport kite folks want to just run sport kite competitions and not grow the number of competitors than we can keep doing what we are doing. the trade off is that don't expect festival or audience involvement. Not a bad way to go, but is a different overall goal than what I see for the future
Nov 9, 2017 1:50 am

Flash: video, online hype ahead of time, broadcasting, live feed, engaging with the competitors and sharing the story online ahead of time.
Nov 9, 2017 1:51 am

Wayne Dowler: does that mean comp only "events"?
Nov 9, 2017 1:52 am

photomom: This leads into another topic but I'll wait until this one is done.
Nov 9, 2017 1:52 am

Flash: I have personally done it with a snowkite event (no audience there) and we had nationwide coverage and people knocking down the doors asking how they could get invovled
Nov 9, 2017 1:52 am

Flash: all of the coverage was done online ahead of time, and with how fast tech has changed, it is a helluva lot easier to do it now
Nov 9, 2017 1:52 am

Flash: (getting it boosted in Outside magazine was a direct result of that)
Nov 9, 2017 1:53 am

Flash: Even as we speak, some of the videos and the TED talk I just did, I have a call to contribute to a very big magazine publication and promote the AKA, and I have people asking me where they can go to learn how to fly stunt kites
Nov 9, 2017 1:54 am

Mikelp3586: Evening all! Checking in stuck at work
Nov 9, 2017 1:55 am

Flash: not sure if that answered the question
Nov 9, 2017 1:55 am

mystainedskin: CLose enough...I get it
Nov 9, 2017 1:55 am

Wayne Dowler: So are we talking some kind of clinic, learn o fly "school?
Nov 9, 2017 1:55 am

John Barresi: Evening mike, Bill.
Nov 9, 2017 1:56 am

Flash: all of this touches on a HUGE issue for me and I will kind of drop a note here about it. Expect it to be a super common theme to all of my answers
Nov 9, 2017 1:57 am

Wayne Dowler: Or are we depending on the structure wqe already have?
Nov 9, 2017 1:57 am

Bill Clay: Hello everyone. Reading what I’ve missed
Nov 9, 2017 1:58 am

riffclown: Some sports are exciting to watch.. others are exciting to only those interested.. Is there a balance or just a decision to be made?
Nov 9, 2017 1:58 am

photomom: With all the emphasis on techonology, live streaming, video, etc. what is being done to keep from alienating those who have no Internet or have limited Internet? Or those who can't or aren't comfortable sitting in front of a computer screen for hours trying to know what is going on?
Nov 9, 2017 1:58 am

photomom: Personally, my Internet doesn't handle live streaming well. So I don't watch much online.
Nov 9, 2017 1:59 am

Flash: No one is surprised that the economics and demographics of the country has changed. Our 'target demographic' (18-45 yr old) has had a drastic change in their value base.... we are not meeting that. (many membership based organization are not) So... we need to completely rethink how and what we are doing
Nov 9, 2017 1:59 am

photomom: I know several flyers who have no Internet at all.
Nov 9, 2017 1:59 am

Flash: sigh.... so, here is the hard numbers..... and the difficult thing to say about the 'no internet' etc.. thing
Nov 9, 2017 2:00 am

Wayne Dowler: dinosaurs
Nov 9, 2017 2:00 am

riffclown: AKA Convention Week I had to work but spent a lot of time thankful there were a few that streamed at least something.. But I'm a heavy internet guy..
Nov 9, 2017 2:01 am

Mikelp3586: I'm 31 and fee like a teenager at my local flys lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:01 am

mystainedskin: Mak'em jealous
Nov 9, 2017 2:01 am

Mikelp3586: Hard to get them motivated or enthusiastic to create more events.
Nov 9, 2017 2:02 am

Wayne Dowler: 66 and when I'm flying is the only time I feel like a teen!! lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:02 am

Flash: I will take myself as an example here, I have had several people complain that it isn't fair that most of our information goes out online or via email. They have requested that I print out all of those emails and mail it to them
Nov 9, 2017 2:02 am

khsidekick: At least you have local flys
Nov 9, 2017 2:02 am

Flash: So, the time it would take me to do that (let alone the cost to print and email) I will be placating one person.
Nov 9, 2017 2:03 am

Mikelp3586: Well I would t say that.... 3 all year that is loca and one is always cancelled
Nov 9, 2017 2:03 am

Flash: Where as in that same amount of time I can reach 10k people on a live feed and engage with 300 people in a conversation directly.
Nov 9, 2017 2:03 am

John Barresi: Evening Gary Mark.
Nov 9, 2017 2:04 am

Flash: the internet and online content is not the way of the future, it is the way of the now, and while it is difficult to fully embrace it, we have to figure out ways to do so, or.... highly encourage those around us that do to also do the job for us.
Nov 9, 2017 2:05 am

Flash: I can name on one hand the regular kite related youtube contributors .....
Nov 9, 2017 2:05 am

mystainedskin:
Nov 9, 2017 2:05 am

riffclown: My closest regular fly is two hours away happens about 3 times a year realistically.. But I have friend I can try to fly with when our schedules line up.. I fly alone most of the time when I fly..
Nov 9, 2017 2:05 am

Flash: and lost count of the kiteboarding ones.
Nov 9, 2017 2:06 am

riffclown: Most of my exposure is here and on youtube
Nov 9, 2017 2:06 am

torontokitefliers: Hello from Canuckistan. Region 13
Nov 9, 2017 2:06 am

Wayne Dowler: the biggest issue I see here tho, is that things like the convention aren't being publicized, only those in the AKA know anything about them.
Nov 9, 2017 2:06 am

Flash: Canuckistan is my favorite of stans
Nov 9, 2017 2:06 am

Flash: fully agree wayne
Nov 9, 2017 2:06 am

Flash: and as for coverage at the convention, there in lies a big chicken and the egg problem.
Nov 9, 2017 2:06 am

Wayne Dowler: can't grow if no one knows
Nov 9, 2017 2:07 am

Mikelp3586: I just recently found out there was a convention in my hometown of Muncie lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:07 am

Flash: I want more coverage, so the first people I go to are AKA members, they know whats best on the field..... but.... most of them have a lack of knowledge on how to do that,, So I have to educate them and encourage them, try to actively get them involved LONG before the event.
Nov 9, 2017 2:08 am

riffclown: and three fingers of your youtube contributors list are in this conversation..
Nov 9, 2017 2:08 am

Wayne Dowler: I see something like the Lincoln City Fest as something to promote, always something happening, always!
Nov 9, 2017 2:08 am

photomom: Sorry. Got kicked off again.
Nov 9, 2017 2:08 am

mystainedskin: thats a whole nother tech issue. Takes effort and time....along with gear
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

khsidekick: That’s the next one I’m going to Wayne
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

Flash: Wayne that is a great example too. I work closely with Eric the social media head on his videos and advertising and we compare our numbers
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

Flash: No tech needed, can do it with a smartphone
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

mystainedskin: for the folks that want email?
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

Wayne Dowler: might be worth trying to get outside coverage?
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

mystainedskin: mailed
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

riffclown: ODSKC got cancelled this year due to losing the field to Frisbee Football..
Nov 9, 2017 2:09 am

Wayne Dowler: boo
Nov 9, 2017 2:10 am

photomom: Smartphones are tech.
Nov 9, 2017 2:10 am

John Barresi: Bethca Frisbee Football has live feeds on their field.
Nov 9, 2017 2:10 am

mystainedskin: ditto
Nov 9, 2017 2:10 am

Mikelp3586: Great Lakes, and now a belle isle fly are closest to me, didn't know about belle isle until 2 days before event
Nov 9, 2017 2:10 am

Flash: as for lincoln city so there was a few videos, and viewership by 'members of the AKA' was somewhere in the 1k, The LC field had 20k+ views on it in the same time
Nov 9, 2017 2:11 am

photomom: I guess I'm totally spoiled as we have a weekly fly.
Nov 9, 2017 2:11 am

Mikelp3586: Yes you are!
Nov 9, 2017 2:11 am

Flash: Regarding Belle Isle, Gary has some good insight on how a 'bunch of crazy millenials' came in and changed that festival, and they had great coverage
Nov 9, 2017 2:11 am

Wayne Dowler: Could there be a bigger presence there - or sponsor? or?
Nov 9, 2017 2:12 am

John Barresi: Evening Tom.
Nov 9, 2017 2:12 am

Tom Wallbank: Good evening, John
Nov 9, 2017 2:12 am

Flash: it is really easy for us in the community to forget or get a confirmation bias of sorts, that if we didn't know about it, it didn't happen. Not calling you out, i do this all the damn time. and have to call myself out on it. These people are talking outside of our old circles
Nov 9, 2017 2:12 am

Flash: As someone who has worked with and continues to work with big ticket sponsors (and a previously sponsored athlete).... i can tell you right now.... we don't have a product to sell that would qualify for sponsorship
Nov 9, 2017 2:13 am

Mikelp3586: I'll pass on the millennial gathering 😵 Lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:13 am

Wayne Dowler: gotcha
Nov 9, 2017 2:13 am

John Barresi: The whole world will be a millennial gathering here in a few more years.
Nov 9, 2017 2:14 am

Wayne Dowler: shhh - ain't hearing that
Nov 9, 2017 2:14 am

John Barresi: lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:14 am

riffclown: but the bottom line for all of us (and the elephant in the room) is how do we generate interest in our hobby while maintaining our own? If it's interesting to us then the audience perception is it's too difficult or troublesome.. Interesting to the audience is an entirely different perspective we don't seem to full y understand.. The world has gone "flashy" and "extreme"
Nov 9, 2017 2:14 am

mystainedskin: Did those gummies make it around yet.....geesh.
Nov 9, 2017 2:15 am

photomom: With live streaming and youtube aren't we letting people fly kites vicariously instead of getting them out to the flying fields?
Nov 9, 2017 2:15 am

riffclown: we can seem more like Curling to the outsiders.. (I personally love Curling)
Nov 9, 2017 2:15 am

Flash: no gummies here yet... you fail... sigh
Nov 9, 2017 2:15 am

John Barresi: I think good videos and livestream done well, actually draw people out.
Nov 9, 2017 2:15 am

photomom: Too much instant gratification, I'm afraid.
Nov 9, 2017 2:15 am

Mikelp3586: No John!!!!!!!!!!!
Nov 9, 2017 2:15 am

photomom: I miss being able to Curl.
Nov 9, 2017 2:16 am

Flash: I guess a lot of stunt kite fliers lived vicariously through Preston then
Nov 9, 2017 2:16 am

riffclown: Karen, if it wasn't a 4.5 hour drive for me I'd head down your way just to fly with your group much more often.. As it is the once a year I get down there is a personal victory for me..
Nov 9, 2017 2:16 am

John Barresi: The issue Karen, is that the demographic we are so dearly missing in kiting ARE in that short attention / instant gratification pocket, and we keep wondering why they don't come in.
Nov 9, 2017 2:16 am

Flash: we all want instant gratification all of us regardless of age. We also all want to commit and dedicate ourselves.
Nov 9, 2017 2:16 am

Wayne Dowler: not enough action - too much strategy in curling for american tastes
Nov 9, 2017 2:17 am

Mikelp3586: I'm in Indiana fly solo 99% of the time
Nov 9, 2017 2:17 am

mystainedskin: ditto
Nov 9, 2017 2:17 am

khsidekick: Colorado solo always
Nov 9, 2017 2:17 am

riffclown: I'm here far more than I fly.. But I take my camera with me when I do so I can share with others..
Nov 9, 2017 2:17 am

Wayne Dowler: spoiled - I get to do both individual, team, indoor, etc
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

mystainedskin: BOOOO
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

photomom: Yes, Wayne.
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

riffclown: I check Scott's youtube and Facebook regurlay because he shares what he does with all of us..
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

mystainedskin: Minor though in the big picture
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

Flash: there will always be an element where people are just watching not interacting... and that is FINE!!! Honestly that taps into one of the greatest basic human needs (or.. uhm.... whats the word) We want to hear and tell stories.
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

riffclown: BTW Scoot,, Keep it up it is appreciated..
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

riffclown: Scott
Nov 9, 2017 2:18 am

riffclown: sorry
Nov 9, 2017 2:19 am

Wayne Dowler: form of identification
Nov 9, 2017 2:19 am

mystainedskin: I have been called worse....butterscotch
Nov 9, 2017 2:19 am

Wayne Dowler: gummies are butterscotch?
Nov 9, 2017 2:19 am

riffclown: That's the problem what IS the BIG PICTURE?? Is there one.. there has to be a goal or an endpoint..
Nov 9, 2017 2:20 am

mystainedskin: agreed
Nov 9, 2017 2:20 am

Tom Wallbank: On the weekend in Tulsa it's rare to go to the field and there not be someone else there. Larry is always there. There a handful of regulars.
Nov 9, 2017 2:20 am

photomom: It seems the majority watch and not commit. We always have those who say they'll come to the fly but never show up.
Nov 9, 2017 2:20 am

Wayne Dowler: bingo
Nov 9, 2017 2:20 am

Flash: the Ted Talk i just did.... 10k people watched live. When the video comes out, who knows how many. Do i care if those people end up being indoor kite fliers? Nope. I am just happy if the feel moved by the story. Will undoubtedly some of those people grow to have MORE than a passing interest in kites. yep. and if one of them get interested enough to fly seriously... that is a win
Nov 9, 2017 2:20 am

photomom: That's us. A handful of regulars.
Nov 9, 2017 2:20 am

photomom: But is that a win big enough to keep merchants and events going?
Nov 9, 2017 2:21 am

Wayne Dowler: seems like every location has them
Nov 9, 2017 2:21 am

Flash: So, I have a big picture, end goals and all of that. Some very comprehensive notebooks with way too much research and etc..... but.....
Nov 9, 2017 2:22 am

Flash: what are your 'big goals' for kite flying as a whole
Nov 9, 2017 2:22 am

riffclown: personal enjoyment and fellowship with others that have a like interest..
Nov 9, 2017 2:23 am

mystainedskin: I have none....other than have fun. I had one...check
Nov 9, 2017 2:23 am

John Barresi: My goal is the change what people see in they minds when they hear "kite".
Nov 9, 2017 2:23 am

John Barresi: Along with all that other fun stuff.
Nov 9, 2017 2:24 am

khsidekick: You succeeded
Nov 9, 2017 2:24 am

Wayne Dowler: my goal is proving that anyone can if I can.
Nov 9, 2017 2:24 am

riffclown: I like being different.. personal challenge...
Nov 9, 2017 2:24 am

Mikelp3586: More group clubs that actually fly, younger folks involved. The "clickiness" washed away. You should see the looks on domes faces when I pull a 6m foil out in a field of slk 😁
Nov 9, 2017 2:24 am

photomom: The sharing and enjoyment of kite flying in a more unified community made up of all types of kite flyers together.
Nov 9, 2017 2:25 am

photomom: Yes, the end of the "clicks".
Nov 9, 2017 2:25 am

riffclown: or the 8M Toxic in low wind.. Stunt a foil that size and it gets instant attention..
Nov 9, 2017 2:26 am

Wayne Dowler: that stunt kites are not 2nd class citizens in the kite world
Nov 9, 2017 2:26 am

mystainedskin: Thats fun and all....but there must be respect for all involved...no matter the format of kite.
Nov 9, 2017 2:27 am

photomom: From where I sit, it's the smaller single line kites that are second class.
Nov 9, 2017 2:27 am

photomom: I agree, Scott.
Nov 9, 2017 2:27 am

riffclown: as for the cliques, there are a few that miss those days as well .. I'm glad they are gone because they almost ran me off the sport entirely.. if it wasn't for Terry Murray and a long talk a few years back I would have moved on to a different hobby..
Nov 9, 2017 2:27 am

Flash: so.... i hear a lot of kite politics etc..... and just to shake it up a bit.... (again those that are around me a lot know I do this status quo challenge a LOT) 1. why do you even care 2. Why does it have to keep being the same?
Nov 9, 2017 2:27 am

Wayne Dowler: respect - yes . not always true here
Nov 9, 2017 2:27 am

Flash: I came on to this kite field as a powerkiter..... I have heard the gammut of cliques and politics.... and well... I just don't give a crap
Nov 9, 2017 2:28 am

Wayne Dowler: I do me in spite of it
Nov 9, 2017 2:29 am

riffclown: I started as a powerkiter as well.. And offline I have a kite you need to try..
Nov 9, 2017 2:29 am

mystainedskin: Cliques?...are we speaking slk,sport,power..etcc...
Nov 9, 2017 2:29 am

John Barresi: Evening Sam!
Nov 9, 2017 2:29 am

Mikelp3586: I don't care...... stating a view is all
Nov 9, 2017 2:29 am

T in WI: Fly and have fun or have fun and fly. There really are only 2 choices for me
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

Flash: if a fellow ktie flier is going to tell me my kite isn;t good enough to play with them... well, They aren't worth my time and I go over 'here' and play and have fun and let them grumble in the corner.
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

Wayne Dowler: can be cliques of each type
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

happysuperbutton: Ha, hiya JB!! My first chat
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

Flash: if it is a festival organizer well... that is different lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

photomom: Quad vs. dual vs. single line vs. big kites. They all have they're groups.
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

John Barresi: Try being a "personality" in the community if you want to see cliques and politics. lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

mystainedskin: ok
Nov 9, 2017 2:30 am

Wayne Dowler: does it spend??
Nov 9, 2017 2:31 am

John Barresi: I just fly, and try to do it better all the time.
Nov 9, 2017 2:31 am

Mikelp3586: I'd buggy through an indoor event if it was possible! 😬
Nov 9, 2017 2:31 am

Flash: mike - I have
Nov 9, 2017 2:32 am

John Barresi: Hello Ralph.
Nov 9, 2017 2:32 am

SHBKF: hi
Nov 9, 2017 2:32 am

Flash: ask John about the time I brought my mt board into a school and nearly at it in front of an audience
Nov 9, 2017 2:33 am

John Barresi: Just curious, anyone here NOT an AKA member?
Nov 9, 2017 2:33 am

John Barresi: (not a pitch, just checking)
Nov 9, 2017 2:33 am

happysuperbutton: (i'm not AKA yet)
Nov 9, 2017 2:33 am

SHBKF: My personal quest has always been to be able to fly all types of kites.
Nov 9, 2017 2:33 am

mystainedskin: I could honestly fly any of the above at an event and be satisfied
Nov 9, 2017 2:33 am

SHBKF: not AKA here
Nov 9, 2017 2:34 am

happysuperbutton: (Hi all Kiteliferinos! for the 1st time in real-time hehehe)
Nov 9, 2017 2:34 am

photomom: I have been made to feel not welcome in the past. I have just moved on to fly with others. But it can be off-putting to newcomers.
Nov 9, 2017 2:34 am

John Barresi: Outstanding reasons why not?
Nov 9, 2017 2:34 am

khsidekick: Not yet
Nov 9, 2017 2:34 am

John Barresi: (be frank)
Nov 9, 2017 2:34 am

Flash: you wont offend me if you say you are not or don't want to be a member
Nov 9, 2017 2:34 am

Wayne Dowler: in here
Nov 9, 2017 2:35 am

mystainedskin: Howdy Happy
Nov 9, 2017 2:35 am

John Barresi: Aye, she may be Prez but Nic is salt-of-earth kite flyer.
Nov 9, 2017 2:35 am

happysuperbutton: can't seem to find the value and given a tight budget for now...
Nov 9, 2017 2:35 am

mystainedskin: Mine always seem to lapse...
Nov 9, 2017 2:35 am

SHBKF: I was for one year but dropped out for no apparent reason
Nov 9, 2017 2:35 am

riffclown: The message we need to effectively share is kiting isn't exclusive.. it's inclusive.. If you don't have a kite in your bag to share with others to fly you are wasting their time as a potentiotial peer and fellow flyer..
Nov 9, 2017 2:36 am

happysuperbutton: i wanna be a kite advocate too (raises hand)
Nov 9, 2017 2:36 am

riffclown: @happysuperbutton I'll cover your fee for AKA..
Nov 9, 2017 2:36 am

John Barresi:
Nov 9, 2017 2:36 am

Wayne Dowler: reason I joined? I was asked! Flew many a year without joining.
Nov 9, 2017 2:36 am

photomom: Several flyers I know have dropped there membership because they feel there is no value in it.
Nov 9, 2017 2:36 am

Flash:
Nov 9, 2017 2:36 am

Flash: that smile was for happy not dropped membership... man i am slow
Nov 9, 2017 2:37 am

riffclown: you join and I'll pay your fee for the first year..
Nov 9, 2017 2:37 am

happysuperbutton: this past summer has changed my life, completely. the Kite community and my experience has been BAR none the best . ever. and i've been a part of lots of hobbies and forums and groups of all sizes
Nov 9, 2017 2:37 am

John Barresi: I've been a member since 1990 and can rattle off my AKA # as easily as my social. lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:37 am

Flash: so.... I FULLY 100% hear the no value thing. that has been an issue for years for many members.
Nov 9, 2017 2:37 am

Wayne Dowler:
Nov 9, 2017 2:38 am

John Barresi: It's a hot topic in the AKA, even when I was Prez, big hurdle to overcome.
Nov 9, 2017 2:38 am

riffclown: I mainly get value from the vendor discounts.. but I buy a lot of kite stuff..especially tails
Nov 9, 2017 2:38 am

happysuperbutton: i chat about wanting to get more people into kiting too, all the time, when im out flying with Steve/Fred/BASKL people
Nov 9, 2017 2:38 am

Flash: Honestly, I see the only way that this organization can not only survive, but thrive, is to get away from what values it can provide it's member. Get away from increasing memberships etc..... and head towards the altrustic model. The AKA should be doing something that even non members, non interested kite fliers will stand behind and gladly support.
Nov 9, 2017 2:39 am

riffclown: @Flash, how do i get the money to you for Happsuperbutton's AKA membership??
Nov 9, 2017 2:39 am

photomom: We joined because there was a time only AKA members could fly on events and demo fields instead of crowded public fields. It was an insurance thing.
Nov 9, 2017 2:39 am

mystainedskin: I try to be a member ....just because. Never really felt I gained anything from it.
Nov 9, 2017 2:39 am

Flash: email president@aka.kite.org and we will work it out through Daniel.
Nov 9, 2017 2:39 am

happysuperbutton: no offence to anyone at all, but we really need the snapchat generation kids to get onboard for our hobby to grow today , least that's what i think.. and to get that new generation of younger folk in, i can honestly say, budget is the biggest hurdle.
Nov 9, 2017 2:39 am

John Barresi: 20 minute warning, fyi.
Nov 9, 2017 2:40 am

happysuperbutton: i can afford the AKA membership.. just.. i've had to been really frugal with my expenditure lately, i will AKA up eventually
Nov 9, 2017 2:40 am

Flash: I have some great stats regarding cost and value based membership/donations etc....
Nov 9, 2017 2:40 am

riffclown: and entry level for kites is a lot pricier than it was when most of us were young..
Nov 9, 2017 2:40 am

Flash: specifically based on younger generations
Nov 9, 2017 2:40 am

John Barresi: Sam, I'd argue that these kids spend money on phones, electric land boards, bicycles, whatever.
Nov 9, 2017 2:40 am

John Barresi: The issue I see is perceived value (and ability) of kites.
Nov 9, 2017 2:40 am

John Barresi: As well as wind / venue dependence.
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

Flash: they will spend money on what they think they can get value from
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

John Barresi: Exactly.
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

Flash: even if it isn't a value that they will directly recieve.
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

riffclown: you sure Happy??
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

happysuperbutton: well, i actually had parents come chat with me at the park when im flying
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

John Barresi: An entry level stunt kite is cheaper now than it was in the 90s.
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

khsidekick: It’s hard to keep my son interested these days
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

John Barresi: During kiting's hey day.
Nov 9, 2017 2:41 am

happysuperbutton: they asked me first immediately, "Is that thing expensive?" "I want to get my son off the couch away from his xbox, and your kite looks perfect for him"
Nov 9, 2017 2:42 am

Flash: (look at crowdfunding.... sometimes you get nothing other than a good feeling for your donation, yet, 'millenials' are happy to spend their money there
Nov 9, 2017 2:42 am

John Barresi: So Sam, what makes for "sexy / cool kiting" for that demographic?
Nov 9, 2017 2:42 am

mystainedskin: No ac/dc
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

photomom: We always are always talking to people when we fly. But they come and they go.
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

mystainedskin:
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

happysuperbutton: see, i just started too. my journey into kiting... I was on that side of the fence. I thought Kiting = dinky single line kites that cost $10 maybe free maybe $30bucks most.
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

John Barresi: lol Scott
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

happysuperbutton: SEEing a kite cost $200 is huge. compared to $10
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

John Barresi: Hi Donald.
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

happysuperbutton: that's where the perception of "expensive" comes in
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

happysuperbutton: they won't understand that we are stunt kites
Nov 9, 2017 2:43 am

John Barresi: What kind of kite flying did you see that changed your perspective on value?
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

happysuperbutton: and the materials and labor intensive that goes into stunt kite builds are expensive
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

happysuperbutton: i saw revs.
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

Flash: basic roller derby package for someone to get into roller derby, 250-500 and you are told when you join that there is a monthly fee for the space, and you will most likely be getting new gear every year.....
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

Wayne Dowler: but you don't have to DO anything other than press a key for crowd funding. Kiting takes a time investment
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

John Barresi: In general, or a particular exhibition?
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

Flash: and we have grown in the past decade to about 50k players world wide
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

Mikelp3586: I jumped into powerkites so expense was crazy to me
Nov 9, 2017 2:44 am

happysuperbutton: im fortunate enough (mature enough) to understand the value to make an informed decision that YES I WILL DROP $200 to buy in.
Nov 9, 2017 2:45 am

happysuperbutton: but i'm not the mass Snapchat generation.
Nov 9, 2017 2:45 am

Flash: yeah, my stunt kites don't cost nearly as much as my ktieboarding gear cost
Nov 9, 2017 2:45 am

mystainedskin: no doubt
Nov 9, 2017 2:45 am

riffclown: same thing for the Buggy Approach..
Nov 9, 2017 2:45 am

riffclown: biger investment..
Nov 9, 2017 2:45 am

happysuperbutton: So if you want I can share even more about how I came to find Kitelife.
Nov 9, 2017 2:45 am

riffclown: but also an audince darw.. they see knietic movement..
Nov 9, 2017 2:46 am

Donaldrke: Hello John
Nov 9, 2017 2:46 am

happysuperbutton: It all started just a year ago. I went with RC CARS. Holy, I was like, RC cars are expensive. I thought RC CARS = $20 @ Walmart. Not $300 stunt truck.
Nov 9, 2017 2:46 am

Donaldrke: How have you been
Nov 9, 2017 2:46 am

Wayne Dowler: how p-opular was that at WSIKF this year? the buggy thing?
Nov 9, 2017 2:46 am

T in WI: But they need to see the movement to music they listen to
Nov 9, 2017 2:46 am

happysuperbutton: And I wanted a $300 rc car because of Youtube Influencers (as they call it)
Nov 9, 2017 2:47 am

John Barresi: YT influencer?
Nov 9, 2017 2:47 am

happysuperbutton: and that's probably one of the many solutions we can try with getting new younger Kiters in
Nov 9, 2017 2:47 am

happysuperbutton: Yup, there's plenty JB
Nov 9, 2017 2:47 am

Flash: i heart infuencers
Nov 9, 2017 2:47 am

happysuperbutton: YTI are like celebs
Nov 9, 2017 2:47 am

happysuperbutton: they do, we follow. anything they say, eat, wear, it's cool, they make it HEAVENLY
Nov 9, 2017 2:47 am

khsidekick: At WSKIF they weren’t letting people try them. I wanted to
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

happysuperbutton: it's their trade skill.
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

Flash: take Casey Neistat, perhaps one of the biggest YT celebs.....
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

happysuperbutton: yes him ^
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

happysuperbutton: is one such YTI
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

happysuperbutton: all you need is to approach them... get through to them, they all have managers
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

happysuperbutton: send them a Kite
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

happysuperbutton: to review.
Nov 9, 2017 2:48 am

Wayne Dowler: no at WSIKF?? BOO!!
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

photomom: I guess I'm showing my age. I don't YouTube enough to know what you're talking about.
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

happysuperbutton: or a training session.
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

Flash: people want to share that story and they tune in all dang time.  There are kite fliers starting to do that with kites...... and they are outside of our traditional community
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

mystainedskin: Basically a popular contributor on yt Karen
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

Flash: why rely on him? why can't we do it ourselves? He would say that as well
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

happysuperbutton: if ONE YTI makes a Single Video on ''OMG WATCH ME FLY THIS CRAZY KITE"
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

happysuperbutton: i can almost bet my life, Kitelife will spike.
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

mystainedskin: vlogs,episodes,reviews...etcc
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

SHBKF: Know Eye Deer
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

riffclown: but what YTI actually knows how to fly a kite??
Nov 9, 2017 2:49 am

happysuperbutton: Casey Neistat, Roman Atwood...
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

John Barresi: Teaching opp
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

happysuperbutton: precisely.
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

happysuperbutton: make a trip
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

Wayne Dowler: fly it well?
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

happysuperbutton: put in our investment into the YTI
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

Donaldrke: If a kid is totally interested I'm sure a kiter would give them a kite, Most of the time they just need to show up
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

happysuperbutton: it will pay. guaranteed.
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

John Barresi: FYI - 10 minute warning.
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

happysuperbutton: YTI's link up through other YTIs all the time.
Nov 9, 2017 2:50 am

happysuperbutton: twitter, facebook, snapchat, instagram...
Nov 9, 2017 2:51 am

T in WI: Every kid age 6 up will be begging Santa for a kite!
Nov 9, 2017 2:51 am

mystainedskin: I have given several away...sometimes too be undermined by a manufacturer or store because of the brand given
Nov 9, 2017 2:51 am

happysuperbutton: they'll work for us, we just give the YTI a kite
Nov 9, 2017 2:51 am

Wayne Dowler: so they are actually creating cultures?
Nov 9, 2017 2:51 am

happysuperbutton: convince a YTI, we might convince a new generation.
Nov 9, 2017 2:51 am

Flash: I can't shake my head hard enough in agreement, and that is why i have been trying desperatley to get more members invovled in that approach.... most are receptive, but i do get a lot of folks that feel that the online approach etc... is not valuable
Nov 9, 2017 2:52 am

mystainedskin: Animal outfit pic? ....vote?
Nov 9, 2017 2:52 am

T in WI: They are then missing the boat
Nov 9, 2017 2:52 am

happysuperbutton: Our kite festivals are awesome at creating awareness. but it doesnt really make kiting look 'valueable' or like something kids are missing out on
Nov 9, 2017 2:52 am

John Barresi: second
Nov 9, 2017 2:52 am

mystainedskin: lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:52 am

John Barresi: all opposed?
Nov 9, 2017 2:53 am

Flash: there in lies the difference..... most ofwhat i look at and look for areas of growth is outside of our community. Whereas a lot of current folks are looking at how to fix the inside
Nov 9, 2017 2:53 am

happysuperbutton: i suck at marketing. kiting/revs need that. i speak from experience (failure)
Nov 9, 2017 2:53 am

Flash: ok ok... one sec... let me set up my cam
Nov 9, 2017 2:53 am

John Barresi: w00t
Nov 9, 2017 2:53 am

mystainedskin: agreed with last comment prez
Nov 9, 2017 2:53 am

John Barresi: Compromising photos of the Prez, she'll never be, errr, Prez, errrr, again.
Nov 9, 2017 2:53 am

mystainedskin: yt reaches out a lot..
Nov 9, 2017 2:54 am

Wayne Dowler: lol
Nov 9, 2017 2:54 am

riffclown: 4 years ago, I changed My youtube page from Air Show footage to almost exclusively kites.. I still have one Aircraft video that gets more views and comment from 10 years ago than the rest of mid vids combined..
Nov 9, 2017 2:54 am

mystainedskin: Ty for your time...enjoyed the chat.
Nov 9, 2017 2:54 am

John Barresi: Evening Joanna.
Nov 9, 2017 2:55 am

dragonfish: hello
Nov 9, 2017 2:55 am

happysuperbutton: Joanna showed me her Urban Ninja recently.. so cool...!
Nov 9, 2017 2:55 am

dragonfish: sorry i wasnt able to make it earlier
Nov 9, 2017 2:55 am

mystainedskin: Urban ninja....mm

Nov 9, 2017 2:56 am

mystainedskin:
Nov 9, 2017 2:56 am

mystainedskin: There are kite making plans online for that...
Nov 9, 2017 2:57 am

Flash: any last random questions
Nov 9, 2017 2:57 am

Wayne Dowler: I see a direct correlation to yoyos - very tech, very skilled, but after seeing a couple, it all starts to look the same to someone on the outside.
Nov 9, 2017 2:57 am

happysuperbutton: @JB take Kitelife to this dude.. it might really shift the needle.. hehe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpERhYTyKSwMikelp3586: Thanks for your time!
Nov 9, 2017 2:57 am

photomom: What about redistricting so as to bring the directors closer to the flyers?
Nov 9, 2017 2:58 am

John Barresi: RC beard shave. Wow.
Nov 9, 2017 2:58 am

John Barresi: These are the guys we've come to rely on.

Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

John Barresi: "Reapportionment"
Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

Flash: i do like the idea of pairing it down..... someone should propose that!!!
Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

happysuperbutton: Snapchat Generation John!
Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

mystainedskin: That would need more participation wouldn't it?
Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

happysuperbutton: (its bogus)
Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

John Barresi: Gotcha.
Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

Flash: especially with now.... i have only a handful of RD's that routinely engage with their members
Nov 9, 2017 2:59 am

happysuperbutton: even i don't get them some times.....
Nov 9, 2017 3:00 am

photomom: I know it comes up in comversation every so often.
Nov 9, 2017 3:00 am

Flash: omg my computer is so slow getting the photo!!!
Nov 9, 2017 3:00 am

Wayne Dowler: ours was RD of the year
Nov 9, 2017 3:00 am

John Barresi: Twice.
Nov 9, 2017 3:00 am

Nov 9, 2017 3:02 am

Wayne Dowler: big finish!!!
Nov 9, 2017 3:02 am

mystainedskin: awesome...
Nov 9, 2017 3:03 am

John Barresi: Thanks a lot for taking some time out with us Nic, I know you have a busy, busy plate from having been in your seat myself, we certainly appreciate it.
Nov 9, 2017 3:04 am

Wayne Dowler: Thanks for the time and energy!!
Nov 9, 2017 3:04 am

Flash: okay, so last question was about decreasing the #of RD's yes? not sure if my response went through in all of the crazy panda goodness
Nov 9, 2017 3:04 am

mystainedskin:
Nov 9, 2017 3:04 am

John Barresi: And congrats for being a part of solidly putting the AKA back in the black for the first time in a long time.
Nov 9, 2017 3:04 am

Flash: I am all for it.
Nov 9, 2017 3:04 am

Chat log from our most recent Direct Lines event with Nic O'Neill (aka @Flash aka current President of the AKA).

2017/11/09 - Nic O'Neill

Spoiler

riffclown: Welcome Guest of Honor!!!!
Nov 9, 2017 1:29 am

Flash: *waves HI!!!!!!!!
Nov 9, 2017 1:29 am

John Barresi: wb Nic
Nov 9, 2017 1:29 am

John Barresi: Hi Kelly
Nov 9, 2017 1:29 am

Global: Flash has been made a moderator by John Barresi.
Nov 9, 2017 1:30 am

khsidekick: Hello everyone
Nov 9, 2017 1:30 am

John Barresi: 5:30pm on the dot.
Nov 9, 2017 1:30 am

mystainedskin: WooHoo! Hi all
Nov 9, 2017 1:30 am

Flash: timeliness is next to unicornness....
Nov 9, 2017 1:31 am

SparkieRob: 🤙🤙
Nov 9, 2017 1:31 am

John Barresi: Big official welcome to Nic O'Neill (aka Flash), current AKA Prez and all around kite nut.
Nov 9, 2017 1:31 am

mystainedskin: 2lb bag of gummies in hand...passes left
Nov 9, 2017 1:31 am

John Barresi: lol
Nov 9, 2017 1:31 am

riffclown: I'd like to ask a follow up question from one of the meetings at the AKA convention.. it got talked about but never really answered..

Flash: hehehe picture coming !!! one sec man
Nov 9, 2017 2:56 am
