Where to begin? Which 'me'? And at which level - molecular, philosophical, political, anatomical, economical? Marital status? [Married to my Lady, who doubles as my best friend.] All are 'me', and 'you' are just as complex and multifaceted. To which 'you' shall I write? Pick one -- here we go.

One would think that a broad brush is initially indicated. I'm a secular humanist, trained as a scientist [chemist] and blessed with an old-fashioned classical education [You know. Latin, Greek, Plato, Kant, Godel, Godot . . . the works.] I enjoy writing [You noticed? Really?] and can be something of a verbose bore. Asked the time, I'm likely to begin by describing the development of clocks. I've found that one of the advantages of a long life is wetware stuffed with all sorts of stuff. It often permits reflection on multiple levels, not to mention the delight of discovering links.

Over the years I've dabbled in many areas. Kiting is but one of them, though on a warm spring afternoon, when the wind's just right, it takes pride of place. I enjoy photography, gardening [flower, vegetable and water], cooking, boat building, wines [We get to the Finger Lakes every few years to stock up], telescope making, astronomy, stamp collecting and music [teasing a Bach fugue apart is a nice winter evening's mental snack, along with a glass of plonk.] The list can be extended, of course.

Asked for a motto, I would reply with two:

'To live in a house by the side of the road . . . and be a friend to man.' [Rousseau]
'And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.' [Chaucer]

Torus 34? The 34 is my yob. Torus refers obliquely to my sun sign and an interest in recreational math.
