As the weather in New England starts to grow colder and the days shorter, the last thing you would expect kiters to do is gather together well after dark. It is just that where they gather, it is neither cold nor dark.
In a small town north of Boston MA, a high school gym is filled with the grace and colors of kites. Indoor flying is very popular in New England, mostly out of necessity. The people there don’t let Mother Nature spoil their flying fun. On the first Saturday of the months from September-May, members of Kites Over New England rent out the Marblehead High School gym to fly everything from miniatures to Great Decas.
For three hours these fliers share kites and tales. The folks there are always willing to share their kites as well as their knowledge. Many a new flier has been introduced to this somewhat new facet of kiting.
If you plan on being in the Boston area on the first Saturday during the months of Sept.-May, make your way up to Marblehead between 6-9:00 PM. For directions and more information visit http://johnr.ne.medi…net/indoor.html where you will find directions as well as some more pictures. While there, you will learn more about the man who heads up the indoor fly in Marblehead, John Ruggerio. John has taken it upon himself to rent the gym and bring in his sound system the night of the event. He even entertains after the fly in his home anyone who wants to drop by. John, his wife Lisa and his daughter Laramie are terrific hosts and make you feel right at home.
The event itself is free to spectators and first time fliers. The cost of the gym is shared by the fliers. The more fliers the less it will cost. It usually runs $5.00 per flier and since I’ve been attending has only gone as high as $8.00. Well worth it. You get to try new kites, gain some knowledge, be with friends and even get to watch some pretty good demos from folks like Curtiss Mitchell, who resides in nearby Beverly, MA.
So come on out, grab your lines and have a great time…Indoors!
