  26. Hi Michael, In Cervia I met you and other kite fliers from the Drachenforum, it has been a great pleasure! During the festival I spent most of time in the STACK area, so when I met John the last day the Gaze was already packed to go back to the United States. Thank you !

  31. Hello All and thanks for this wonderful resource. I started casually flying kites in the early 80's, mostly just sending single line kites up and staring at them. I also took a tiny pocket kite on many backpacking trips. In the mid-90's, picked up a small dual line Premier kite and a Rev II. I spent many hours on these kites, initially while playing hooky from grad school duties! I've recently jumped back in the fray with a delta conyne, a dual line sled and a couple of Prism dual lines, one for me and one for my wife. I also just flew a new, custom Rev XX Tarantula for the first time this past weekend. It's good to be back!!

  33. Thanks for the links...I don't have any issue with line tangles/management as I've watched both line management tutorials from John and Joe and that's what I'm using here, it's a bit of a hybrid between the two I guess where Joe mentioned he liked to keep a finger between the line sets as he winds. I saw that an thought, well if you're keeping the line set separated between your fingers why not modify the winder to keep them separate as well and see how that works out in the field. Just experimentation really and will see how I like both methods/winders in usage.

  34. Thanks so much @John Barresi. I don't have much of a kite story, but perhaps it's writing itself as I type this... A year or so ago I held someone's line momentarily at a park and it re-sparked a childhood excitement. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it stuck with me. A year later and I'm still watching kitebuilding videos thinking about designs I want to put together, so I'm getting out some plastic bags and bamboo skewers and going to see what's what.

  36. No I haven't bought one yet. I was concerned about the flight characteristics because the person who helped design the upgrades is pretty much a dedicated freestyle flier, and I am not. I prefer directional flying. I still might buy one though because I like the purple color, plus it has a polyester sail and is supposedly the same shape as the NG, so if I don't like the way it flies compared to the NG, I could probably put an NG bridle on it. I did buy an extra yellow Widow NG though since they are being discontinued and I like mine, and continue to use it and abuse it.

  37. Kites and lines no problem (Depending on size restrictions. Stakes will cause issues and should be checked (or buy a cheap screwdriver when you arrive) Quad Handles MAY bear further inspection due to the weapon-like shape.. Short version. Most things OK but check or leave the stake behind.

  38. Get what your point is. A time and place for everything. I don't actually compete to cut an opponents kite down usually. Glass impregnated string is quite dangerous. I fly solo so it's no imposition on other flyers as I usually fly on a very short line 20 yards. It's great fun with the miniature fighters as they are much faster and reactive. Around here the big fighter kite festival is in January. Real hard core fighters. Trees full of destroyed kites. Awsome fun.

  41. I have a few quads. A few "original" Revolution, some "replicas" (in improved version), a few Detox and three Djinn. The Djinn are by far the most flown quads. I like the colour design/layout, the quality of the craftsmanship, the innovative details and the flying characteristics. Another advantage is the always good helpfulness and support from @John Barresi. In the quad (!) sector, in my opinion, only Los Hermanos (-> Detox) are as great. Disadvantages? Hmmm... I don't know any! Difference to other quads? I mainly fly Djinn and Detox. Djinn on short lines. Detox on long lines. But that's more subjective and my choice is based on terrain and mood.

  43. Here is some more at Tweelijners. A set of descriptions (including some flight properties and history) and plans of the Belgian kites (Le Quartz, Horizon, L' Organic, Temppu Leija, B'zar and Le Vortex) can be found at: http://www.tweelijners.com/Kites_from_Belgium/start.html No, no building for me as it looks like today - that would take the time I have/take for flying (and I never had a sewing machine anyway). However some dreaming now and then is an available option and is also free of charge. There is a video of these kites, "Le grand Organic à la plage", that I like much. It is playful, artistic, shows nice coastal views, good flying and seems to be filmed with high quality gear and is well edited. Don't watch this on your mobile since the mood of it might not be conveyed! See and listen in front of a decent monitor and give it your attention during it's full 8:27 minutes!:

  44. The trick is to keep tension in the lines as you check for twists. Most of what looks like twists are merely wraps that will unwrap under tension. You should have no more than 1 or 2 actual twists in the line, which are quite simple to undo. Sometimes when you set up brand new lines you may have 3 or 4, or you may find that one pair somehow managed to slip in between the other pair, but again, these are fairly easy to get rid of. If you let the lines go slack and try to get rid of what appears to be twists and tangles you will end up with spaghetti every time. Watch the line management video several times and use this method religiously. It has been proven over time and that's because it works. Just be careful not to twist and cross the pairs through each other when you are handling the lines and you'll be fine. Watch closely in the video and you will see that John keeps the lines in pretty much the same orientation to each other as they are when connected to the kite as he winds/unwinds them. As long as each pair (left, right) is connected to itself at the ends and the ends are not slipped through each other, what appears to be a bunch of twists is not really there. Again, and I can't stress this point enough, watch the "Line Management" video several times and do it that way. The part where he "waggles" the handle is so you can figure out which handle is connected to which side of the kite. Wrong side? Put that handle in the other hand. And, by the way, welcome to the forum if I haven't already said hi to you. Believe me, we all went through the same learning process. I spent over an hour one time untangling lines that probably weren't tangled in the first place, but it sure LOOKED like they were. Edit: There are lots of Rev flyers in Washington, probably more than any other state. Get together with one or more of them at their home field or at a festival, and you will learn more in one day than you would in a year on your own. PM someone near you and fly with them. Kiteflyers are a friendly bunch and always eager to help someone who's just starting out.
