  2. Spent 3 hours on this kite today . Wind 25 mph sustained with some gusts I'm sure hitting 30. Absolutely amazed. Love this kite. Shipped promptly and packed exceedingly well. Did I say I was pleased? No? Well that would have just been a major understatement anyways !!!

  4. I let others familiar with the kite answer that question.. The reason I know about the tails and materials is, I make kites out of them.. Rarely do I actually fly with tails on the kites..

  5. Several options.. OSK has 2" wide Icarex tails 33' long for about $13 each The Kite Shoppe has 1" x 40' Nexus Ribbon tails for about $7 g-Kites has several different options that should line u0p with your needs as well from Ribbon to Skywriter to transition tails.. Flymarket and Goodwinds also have several options to "make your own"

  8. I had my first water play some months ago too, all I can say is, Be prepared for the weight change. Once the kite hits the water you're gonna feel the weight of water, is completely different from air. The shock caught me off guard and I panicked, it felt like the water was quicksand and I'd be forced to take the wet walk of shame. But the "flight" dynamics still remain true, just be sure to position yourself with the correct water current direction (like wind direction) and the kite will respond like what you expect. Oh and my test play was in still water, no waves only a light current.

  9. Water is no big deal, the waves are your enemies ! I have broken many sticks due to the action of waves, but never lost a kite entirely. Practice your water flying in higher winds, it makes it easier for the kite to take off out of the water. Use a kite stake... when you land in the water & are unable to relaunch, stake the kite & walk the lines parallel to the water line, pulling the kite gently (!) to the shore. Watch out for the waves... If you pulling too hard, that's how the kite will break, take your time & pull it in slow. It's kinda a give & take procedure, like landing a big fish. Most of what I said above is related to dual line kites. I've flown 4 line kites in & out of the water all the time, but never had a problem relaunching the four line. It is super-fun to dunk the kite, let it disappear & then surface & take off ! I rarely come home with dry kites !

  12. Yes! excited to change them out. They are the blue plastic bigger ones (hold up to 500 lb line).

  13. here's another great set of plans, the Dunton/Taylor Kite flies indoors to easily 25 or 30 mph without any adjustments it's a fast climber too, a couple of thousand feet in only a few moments! http://www.kitebuilder.com/wiki/pmwiki.php/KitePlans/00074 Every kite flier should carry this kite, to break it you need to slam it in the car door, merely stepping on it will not suffice.

  14. How much room do you have? I use extension cord reels, the kind with a frame, not the hand held winder. I haven't timed it, but I can wind up 150 foot of line fairly quickly- Definitely less than 2 minutes, probably closer to 1 minute. Of course, they take up more room than a hoop winder, but space is not an issue for me. I have never used them in the sand. The ones I have don't have ball bearings to get gummed up. I don't know what kind of issues sand would cause. You can put a lot of line on one. 500' of 500# is about a quarter full. The 300 feet of 6mm Paracord I have fits nicely on one. I do not fly kites off the reel. If I had a hold on the frame, I am sure a gust of wind would tear the reel right out/off.
