  1. my quad fades have the leading edge facing/closer towards me, with the lines hanging underneath, a turtle is the opposite (facing away,... w/lines over the trailing edge) whatever they are termed A rising fade is something I've still gotta' work on some more though, HA!!!!!

  2. This is the Second Annual Long Beach Island festival. Last year was such a fun festival, that it was really tugging at me to go to this year's fest. Traffic wasn't too bad for a Friday before a holiday weekend. I got into town about an hour before dark, and ran down to the beach with my bag, eager to take advantage of the smooth onshore 10mph breeze. There were a surprising number of kites in the air, I guess I missed the first full day. I guess I'll have to take off the whole day next year and get here earlier ! So... there was a wedding going on while the kites were flying overhead. I wonder if they planned the wedding to be under the kites, or if they were really surprised to see this going on right next to and over them. I came across this guy, flying the heck out of this kite. I never did find out what kind of kite that is. Saber ? Machine ? something Euro ? I was tossed as to flying 4 lines or two, as the wind was around 10mph. I stop flying duallies and fly the Revs right about at 10. Hmmmm..... what to fly ? The Skyburner Solus won the grab... Looking forward to tomorrow, even though the forecast looks kinda wet. Hey, there's a 40% chance that it won't rain. Here's hoping !

  6. My daughter bought me this Cobra kite. The first time I tried to fly it at the beach. The wind was about 18mph...much too strong. The string broke and I had to go through many creeks, but was lucky to find it. After that I went on YouTube and found the wheel I am holding in my page photo. I also got Kevlar twine and it is holding up find. The wheel sometimes goes crazy fast. I wear gloves to trey to get a hold of it and lock it. I have attached a photo of the kite. I would like to try and find this RobB. If you know how to contact him, please let me know...so I can make you jealous, but not intentionally

  7. Correct, a quad fade is equivalent to a dual line turtle - the Hadzicki style quad has aerodynamic limitations on its back, LE toward the pilot.

  8. @Exult I do agree that the quad version looks more like a turtle than a fade, however that's what people are calling it.

  10. Before kiting I've hunted turtles for soup. It's also called turtling. Turtling a kite is much, much more pleasant and enjoyable. The big snapping turtles are down right dangerous. Not kidding at all!! The only kite I got that I can turtle consistently center window in 15+ winds is my Mind Trick vented. I fly across, get to center, snap stall ,throw both hands forward while stepping forward.Happens fast and hesitation in my next moves results most times in failure. It helps that that kite loves to turtle. Even so it's hard to hold the turtle in high winds. When winds are 20+ in center window the few moves I can pull off on that kite all start with that move. When successful it's the biggest rush I get flying a kite. Failure is a heart in the throat gasp followed by OH NO don't be broken.Under 12 I can now watch and getting a pretty good grasp on what is happening. Allows me to correct mistakes mid trick at times. Above 15 most stuff is split second timing. The fade in higher winds? Well dude you better be good. Failure points the kite straight down. Few weeks ago was on and feeling cocky. Winds were hitting 20+. Came across 3/4 high in the window. Hit center and banged out 2 flic flacs. The 3rd one I lost and drove the Mind Trick into the ground HARD. Upper and lower spreaders went flying in all directions.Kites hardest hit by far. I was sickened thinking of the damage while going to the kite.NOTHING BROKE!!! Shocked (still shocked)I flew for a bit longer. Confidence was a little rocked to say the least. Winds went higher and I quit for the day. Didn't want to test my luck or courage again LOL. Once you get the turtle the fun increases 10 fold. When first starting winds over 12 would be intimidating. I'd have to buck up and go for it. When winds go over 20 I still need to spend some time focusing and gathering myself before I fly. Sometimes I can't and don't fly.I think in higher wind flying that process won't change for me. No matter how many years I get to do this stuff. In any winds let the nose start tilting forward. Pop launch the kite and go right to the turtle move. It'll start giving you the feel. Leads to some great low and ground based tricks that aren't to hard on your nerves or kite. Great practice when there's not enough wind to keep it in the air. Flapjack that kite!! It's a blast.

  11. Yes, three meanings to choose from. When it isn't available as a choice, I tend to choose "frobnicator" as a name, from the same origin.

  13. Then you will love kiting. They break and parts are lost. Sometimes when I break something I have to let it sit a day or 2. Other times I'll repair right away.Repairs while frustrated are not fun.The WORST thing is waiting for parts. The get extra advice is no joke. Learned early on to enjoy the process of fly it, break it, fix it and fly it, repeat. It was either that or quit LOL. The knowledge that people share here is astounding. They will guide you thru every aspect of kiting. Even building your own. There is a fella(RobB) in your area that if you get to fly with him will make me pretty jealous. His videos are great and his kite collection is one to admire.

  14. Call it Nov 20th? I think we’ll run these drawings a little longer (duration) through the holiday season anyway, folks be busy and doing the family thing.

  15. Both, also how high the kite is in the window - the higher it is, the easier it gets to throw it into a turtle.

  16. Welcome to the forum, Flap Floblem. It's good to see people from the Island getting interested in kite flying. I'm not sure if we've communicated before, but I live in Suffolk on the North Shore. I haven't been out flying much this year, but I still grab a short session here & there. Where are you on the Island, and what are your flying hours ? Maybe we can meet up...

  17. OK... day 2. I gotta say, I am totally exhausted. Something about walking around in the sand in the rain all day, I guess. Well, not rain all day, but as the forecast read, it rained 60% of the time. Didn't care, I was there to fly, and even at times when my kite was the only one in the air. But a really good time... it was good to see these faces that I only see once a year, and all the friendly residents of Long Beach Island. They're something else, so welcoming and friendly, just like kite folks. When I woke up, this is what I saw out of my window... these were taken from my balcony. Yeah, I guess I got up late... This is turning into a 'real' kite festival. Even with the grey weather, the turn-out was very impressive. This is only the second year that this festival has been held. These guys had an actual real-deal Buffalo Cody. First time I've seen one of those in person ! Wow, just Wow. I've seen this stack before, it just doesn't get old. So, what could top a stack of Rainbow Revs ? How about a Jimi stack. I got to examine these up close... the intricate sewing was very impressive. Of course, every 'real' kite festival needs a Bol race. I think I need to look into these for my kids, it looks like a good way to tire them out ! Yeah, those again. Did I mention I really like these ? 8) Something different, Dual Line and Quad line mega-fly ! Yup, some dual lines, too. I couldn't identify this kite yesterday, I suspected that it was something kinda rare, but it was confirmed today that these are 'Machines'. Not something you see everyday... and not one, but two !
