  2. Hi all, I’m not actively broadcasting this across the community but the core group of folks here make KiteLife what it is and have been so kind to our projects over the years so I wanted to share some personal news, hopefully providing a little insight into my absence from many active discussions here. After a little over nine years, my wife and I are separating - still a lot of love, but we’ve struggled for a long time now and our two characters together just aren’t working for either of us... With this in mind, I’ve been spread fairly thin emotionally while we’ve been working our way through what’s next. I won’t air laundry here except to say there are no villains involved, we just need to evolve our situation and I can’t quite swing the long term expense of two separate residences (theirs and mine) so I am currently working to find an small affordable RV for myself like the Itasca Spirit, which actually fits into my long term goals of being able to do kite tours on and off through the year, as well as being able to stay in Portland and maintain sufficient time with my son - I’m close to having what I need to make all this happen, but I may be putting some old kite treasures up for raffle or sale over the next few weeks to cover the difference so keep an eye out for that! ✌️ Life ebbs, flows and continues, my son is still well cared for by us both, so we move forward with our heads held as high as possible while we find our way. Please, consider all this with the kindness it deserves and try not to contribute to gossip - all that needs to be known by anyone outside my family is said here. ❤️ Thank you all for your patience and understanding of my varying output / input while life is under construction, but everything else should be business as usual and as always, this is your home too. 🙏🏻

  6. Hi all, just popping in for an update... All the RV repairs and upgrades are holding strong - also put in new carpet, replaced the battery and a failing master brake cylinder, having a 2-way alarm put in today... Pretty much the last thing to fix is the shower, a couple of small cracks and some recaulking. In the meantime, I’m sort of scattered to the four winds with my various divided worlds: 1 - the family’s apartment (Luca’s home and some office tasks) 2 - the RV life (night parking, fill, dump, etc) 3 - my storage unit (other office tasks, RV storage) 4 - my father’s home (visits and parttime night parking) 5 - and of course, lots of upcoming travel by plane (storing RV, etc) Basically, draw a big skewed rectangle over all of Portland and that’s my map from day to day at home... No real efficient way to slice it all up, but I’m doing what I can. I’m not complaining, I’ll find a rhythm with all this but I wanted to inform everyone as to my status, and hopefully preserve the ongoing patience and support shown by all of you during this significant transition. Fly happy, fly well! ✌️

  9. Picking up this little treasure tomorrow morning. 1990 Winnebago Itasca Micro Spirit... Roughly 97K Just 2 owners before me All major service receipts since 1990 Rebuilt engine, tranny and starter Clean CARFAX She’s nearly 30 years old, I’m already anticipating some work ahead although she has all the telltale signs and records of having been cared for quite well... Looking forward to a crash course over the next week, regardless. 👍🏻 First priorities are to replace the propane tank and get a generator / solar combo to tend the RV battery, also have to have a kite cabinet / case built for where the “activity cabinet” sits in that diagram (currently empty floor space). Already tapped into (and visited / confirmed) an excellent Boondocking site on an old couple’s homestead about 30 minutes south of Portland, as well as securing RV storage to swap my car and RV in and out of as needed depending on what I’m doing (traveling or not). ✌️

  10. Hopefully this compensates somewhat for the delay with our last drawing. And for the record, it *might* be possible too negotiate the model (ST/MV/VT) if you already have a Djinn ST in your bag. No promises, but you guys know I'm always keen to try and find a happy balance.

  18. A new 1.5 mesh based on the Challenge PolyMax and a touch of Icarex Light Blue scrap. Hoping to make this a higher wind kite. Made my own 1" strips from the poly this time instead of using tails. I may open the mesh pattern a bit but you get the idea. Playing with some of all I've learned. You can see a touch of Mesh, A touch of Poly, and a hint of Perspective. Except for the snowflake entire sail will be the Midnight Challenge PolyMax. I'll also be edge binding in the same material. LE will be my normal White.

  22. I've grown tired of attaching and detaching my lights, so I'm building one for a permanent home. Fingers crossed. 11 panels (5/1/5). Based roughly on the B-series because of the straight lines, but slightly different dimensions to help with the weight of the rig, plus some other refinements. Planning on midnight blue, fluorescent green, and white/reflective trim. The lights will ring the kite and be held in with the sheer trim. Here are the lights in action, held with packing tape on a Djinn.

  23. I flew a kite today. It had been some time since I had. The winds of Spring were calling & I had an old friend with me. The Zephyr knows me well. It was my first good kite. I am not a great flier but modesty is a good trait for someone always learning. Don't know why it had been so long, probably over a year. Maybe life seems tough at times or has too many distractions but there is really no reason not to indulge. I had missed the wind on the back of my neck. I did seem to still remember how to not crash. Pulled off a few tricks, made some blunders but did some successful ground recoveries. I enjoyed the concentration involved that allowed me to focus & zone out into the moment of flight. The winds were fickle as the usually are here in the mountains. Varied from dead calm to gusts that made me park at the top with the lines whining. Love the whine. Hope I don't have such a pause again. If I always carry some kites with me I will surely fly some more. Best wishes from SHBKF

  24. This is sooooo awesome. I have seen the Djinn fly so many times. Looking forward to it. Perfect timing in that I am retiring from my day job this Friday and our Dual Line kite team (Austin End Of the Line) has two confirmed festivals as things start to open up. Kitefest Louisian in Baton Rouge and a Balloon festival in Shreveport Louisiana.

  27. Well...here we go! In proper form, I listened to you all. I started by contacting Lam Hoac. Check out the custom I-T-M (Intense Trick Machine) he made for me. I gave him complete artistic license. Also, if anyone needs a KILLER kite bag, Lam crushes it! I have two Prism roll-up bags, but the bag I got from Lam is like nothing I've ever seen. I'll keep you updated as I grow my collection again. I think a Moonie Mamba and a Benson. For the Benson, I can't decide if I should go old-school-original Outer Space, or go new-tech supernova. Anyone with Benson experience, I'd love a review.

  30. No, this isn't about kite vents this is about kite advice. I feel the need to vent a bit. I've recently heard, read or overheard lots of advice to new fliers. This advice comes from all sorts of seasoned fliers (including me). The problem is our advice is sometimes completely overkill for someone just starting out in the world of kite flying. The problem with some of this advice (including mine) is what works for one person doesn't work for everyone and we can collectively turn new fliers off to kiting even though that not our intentions. They ask fairly simple straightforward questions and we all want to help but we simply overwhelm them with information of varying relevance. A few do step to that level quickly and may become better fliers. A few get completely discouraged and simply back off. (I saw that happen this weekend and that's why I started coming up with this post.) Unfortunately many times we don't seem to notice and that is a shame. Just to point out an example using my own advice. Not everyone wants their Symphony turned into 4 lines BUT, I seem to respond with that tact most of the time when that particular kite get mentioned. Yes, I'm proud of the result of my bridling technique but I now realize this isn't the best advice to a new flier unless they want to start the transition from dual to quad. Some people simply want the pull and fun of the 2 line version. Another example. French bridles do not make a newbie a better flier. They may help certain individuals tune in and progress to the intermediate level but to an absolute newbie French bridles are not even a discussion point yet. They can definitely impact Intermediate to Experienced fliers achieve that extra connection to the kite but for the beginner, they aren't doing axels or flic flacs yet. They are trying to get the kite in the air and stable. Until they have skills to get them there, a French Bridle is just an extra expense that won't teach them anything. Magic Sticks. Same conversation as the French Bridles. There are some exceptions like being able to simply park the kie without staking it but for a newbie that's still trying to get assembly and setup right, this conversation is way too early. Yet Another Example. Frames are also individual choices. As we progress in kiting we all tweak our frames from simply swapping out the SLE for a standard frames (IMO always good advice) to the 2 wrap, 3 wrap, race, green race conversation. Them we get into the hybrid combinations like a 3 wrap center with 2 wraps ends or even modular or travel frames. These are all very valid points but to a newbie, it's usually overkill and confusing. What a Newbie needs is that initial sense of; "When is a 2 wrap better than a 3 wrap for conditions?" "What are the advantages of a Race frame?" "How does a P300 Skyshark Frame compare to a 3 Wrap?" Kite Brands, We all have preferences and many of us have several brands in our bag. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. Things like Price, add-ons, and "simple startup" matter, ESPECIALLY when individuals are just starting out and learning. The most expensive new thing isn't going to make them a master flier overnight. We all know only practice can make a person better. Until the practice time is invested and basic setup/takedown, Line management are learned, the latest thing isn't going to make that huge difference. Sage advice to the quadline newbies. -Start with small movements and first get comfortable with the kite. Watch the basic instructional videos at Kitelife or elsewhere. -There simply is NO substitute for practice time on the handles. Buying additional gear will not make you a better flier. The only way to learn to not crash is to practice not crashing. -(This is opinion and your tastes and preferences may vary wildly.) If you are trying to save money, an all inclusive setup like the Rev EXP Which include the handles and lines may be your ideal starting point. (Springs engaged or not engaged are totally your call. Try both and establish your own opinion). A used setup is also probably a good choice. Learn line management, setup/take down, and basic positioning. Everything else starts from there. -It's critical you don't try to shortcut on kite line. It is your connection to the kite and trying to save money here will frustrate you far more than any incremental cost savings. FWIW, trying to save money on that first kite can yield the same types of frustrations. -Replacement Leaders for the handles may be the biggest single upgrade you'll want to start with. The stock leaders will work but as your skills increase even incrementally, a Leader change will enable you to explore your skills in ways no other single upgrade will provide. That upgrade is something we almost always agree on and will continue to grow with your skillsets. It will also act as a measuring stick as your skills grow. You'll see the tuning you use change over time. -Learn and know the wind range of your kite. It isn't until trying to fly it outside the range it was designed for that we often get into the Frame, venting and over-control types of conversations. Avoid flying that new full sail in the very strong wind. Once it's stretched, it is stretched forever. The solution there is vent it or start over with a new kite. -Fly OPK. (Other People's Kites) Most of us will gladly hand you our handles and will tell you what we think makes our kites and setup different or better. You can evaluate for yourself before spending money on those specific sails, those add-ons, tweaks or changes. The more you learn the more you can smartly experiment. -Figure out what works for you. Figure out what is limiting your flying ability other than practice. If you do run into an equipment related limitation, that's the time to really ask for the sage advice and again figure out what works for you. -Experience is the greatest teacher. The Experienced Flier can give advice and spend time with you but, your own experience is what you WILL learn from. How you internalize and use that advice from others is completely up to you. Sage advice to the sage advisors. -Know your audience, if they are ready to go down the rabbit hole take them there but please be able to sense when what is shared is too much. -State fact as fact and opinion as opinion. A simple "IMO" changes the whole tone for both the newbie and the seasoned flier. We all have opinions and we all have facts. Identify which one is being shared. -What works for you or me might not work for everyone. Emphasize at every stage of instruction that the new flier needs to find what works for them. FWIW, All of this is my opinion and based on not only advice I've given but also advice I've heard, read or listened to. I welcome responses from every direction. Let's not overwhelm the new flier until they are truly ready for the rabbit hole.

  36. Piecework for the center panel is done. Decided on 3 vertical orange panels to define the middle. I tried several pics to get the UV/Flo Yellow effect and got a pretty good capture.. First with the black light only.. Next is normal light Then Both Only this portion of the kite lights up. (unless I decide to use fluorescent thread.) I have not yet checked the white Dacron to see if it will light up well. Would be an interesting LE effect if it does..

  37. Not a review by any mean, but I had more flying time since last time and why not. The video is from last month. https://youtu.be/VkM-T3sVM6A Coming from decades of Rev flying, I still remember my neon blue and yellow Rev one, the smell unfolding it and the hours spent (untangling the lines the firs times) and watching the accompanying video about how to fly the thing. Years later I was competing with them, (until 1998 maybe?) I had a full set of Rev 1.5, stopped for a decade, the virus came back last September, I saw what Carl Robertshaw came up with and could not wait to fly the weird thing. The kite comes in a nice bag, with a separate pocket for the 4 standoffs and a Velcro strap to keep the kite rolled up. Assembly can be tricky the first times, I did it in my backyard several times, Carl video is very clear. Make sure that the bridle stays untangled, but you can also untie the bridle, that is attached to the central spar via a knot, like any dual line kite and solve the tangle. The first time pushing the spars won’t be easy. A little lubrification will help to connect the outside wing fittings to the spar, make sure you push the carbon fiber all the way inside the connector. I usually fly few minutes and check the kite to see if the end of the spar is not all in and bending the fitting. I saw a pic of one pushing thought the rubber and then the sail. Once assembled the kite lays upside down ready to go. It flies differently from a Rev, of course. It’s 3D deep sail offers much more of a stable flight especially at low speeds the kite seems glued to the sky. lol of this is from memory since I don’t have a Rev or other quad to compare with. Looking forward to that. People loves watching it spin, it’s pretty big too, more like. Rev1, but they really enjoy when after spinning and flying gracefully and slow, you dramatically fly up, stop, and rush down for a dive, just like a rev. The difference I that the Fulcrum, otherwise very quiet, literally roars like a jet at speed surprising everyone. Has a very ample wind range, I was able to fly the std in around 5mph, and up to maybe 12, I do have an UL spare but I haven’t tried it yet. All Rev manouvers are there, beside the side slide that only works with the Fulcrum inverted, the shape of the sail preventing that with the kite right side up. The kite feels very smooth in every direction, but you have to be careful about one important thing, it’s not that uncommon to loose track of the up side the Fulcrum doesn’t have an obvious shape like the Rev and I more than once pulled the brakes, thinking the kite was pointing up, to see it go down and slam the ground if I couldn’t recover fast enough. This happens especially when spinning fast on the center, but I blame my attention, and the black and white color pattern partially for this mishap, which I’m sure will become less frequent with more flying. The kite flies straight up and down in a very balanced way, and stops dead when you want it to in a very dramatic way, the roar helps this effect too. Spins on the center or on either wingtip are also very round, assuming your lines are equalized and the wind is stable, slow it’s a very precise kite. At speed, having quite a bit of mass and therefore momentum it needs more pilot fine control. I barely explored the fade and turtle, both amazing. If you step forward having the kite down on the ground, it will roll on its back, like a dual line would do and actually take off in that position! Control is tricky since all your 4 lines will be slack, you can kind of control the kite sideways attitude like you would do in a dual. Then flick your wrist up and regain normal flight. I didn’t try this much, hitting the ground or loosing control seems easy, I’ll try on a beach or tall grass when I’ll have a chance. Or in the air when I have more space. Weather has been mild so far an the small Berkeley field is full o people, dogs, kids, moms trying to launch kites against wind, domes, rc planes...a guy has a beautiful RC glider that hand-launches and flies for minutes in spirals jus to catch it back in zero wind, as I watch holding my WW. The quality of build is very high. The fittings are feeling all he pressure of the central spar and it’s imperative that you push the frame all the way in, or it will bend the wingtip fittings and might perforate. I’m sure they will came out with a more rigid piece or I’ll just change them frequently. You only assemble the central spine and the 4 standoffs, which are 3 and 4 mil. Bigger ones go on the wings. Smaller in the center. But I’m sure you all saw CR assembly video. Solid kite, very light even in standard, moans and pops in low wind, and roars as you pull it in more than 5mph. All in all I’m very happy about the whole deal. I sold my Rev 1.5 set to get it, with the UL spine too, after flying Revs for decades I was curious about something new and the Fulcrum fits the role perfectly. I still haven’t explored much of its capabilities, another very interesting thing are spins with your arms very offset, say the right all back and the left all extended, to make the kite spin in a cone shaped curve, because of the 3D shape. I gets really fast. I remember the rev Suoersonic I’m not misaken could do the same. And of course the flic-flac, fade and who knows what that S shaped wing promises. I had it since November. I need more time. More detailed review in the future.

  38. A few of us DC Misfits got our hands on a custom Djinn this weekend. Per usual the wind was, well, non existent. And per usual, these guys make it look easy.

  43. My wife and I decided to get dual line foils for some nieces and nephews this year. The store only had one Synapse in stock. Hearing that we wanted 4, they offered to order more. I asked if they could order HQ Symphony instead. We have 4 on order. Hooray for Kites and Fun Things. #SmallBusinessSaturday

  44. Hi everyone, thanks for all your input. User @Corey Bell has generously hooked me up to fly with him yesterday and he helped me get a kite (one if his Rev 1.5’s) into the air and fly for a few hours. It was a lot of fun, and with his great help, I was able to actually fly and do some basic stuff. I will probably go with the Rev EXP. I understand it’s not a forever kite, but right now it’s what I can afford and from everything I see it’s the best choice from what I have available and can afford. Thanks again @Corey Bell and everyone else for their input.

  45. honestly? I had more fun (as did my wife along side me) when nobody knew us. We heard statements like "what are you doing here?" Well we paid our own way and thought we could join you,..."nope you required to fly outside of the ropes, where the public is located!" Like I shouldn't eat in the hotel lobby for breakfast, where I paid to stay,... just 'cause you'all be there too? I've borrowed equipment plus music countless times, folks laughing because it's a ballet event and you win based upon your best interpretation of the musical score, "showing up the day of the event with a show kite(Beautiful Evil Quad by Joel Sholtz) and no planned music,... what's up with that?" ( I won!) We've paid our own way internationally, helped just like the hired guns sweating in the sun, (set-up, unloading the truck, lugging equipment across the turf, repacking) and then told I can't share a meal in the organizer's tent or their enclosed fields either! Broke new ground with establishing festivals (wife is much better as this aspect of kiting), getting people to attend on their own nickel, (a week long international gig!), then to find that after two years and six attendees, that they can invite a 6-man team who bitched and complained about everything they were offered FREE, ..... undoing all of our goodwill w/the tourism office. I've had friends help me, by explaining that THEY couldn't fly in the arena offered even though I'm the one dealing with the sponsors (Don't EVER go behind our backs like this!) We could have flown kites on magic wands (sticks) whilst eating snacks and enjoying adult beverages, knuckleheads! I've had friends complain to other vendors about the conditions offered for us to fly at the event, (like they'd care about the kiters and a sidehill lie) gig surrounded by trees, spectators crossing our field to get to parking or the entrance. Take your crap and go home dude, you're ruining a good time for everyone here. When I had no responsibilities, except my own pleasure (and the misses too!) Those we the days of old. Now? I'm like a wanted man, picture hanging in the urinal at the USPS. Folks want to see what I can do and I just want to make eye-contract with a spectator ONE of 'em and fly for them, just for fun! I'm old, I can't go sixteen hours straight anymore, not the way I'd like to. Someday soon, I'll be the one on the sidelines cheering on the next generation. Smile and share,... is that so tough? I didn't forget my roots and I will never become a kite clique supporter who belittles that next guy approaching us. Smile and share, we're all envious of someone else and we should just be happy with our own lot in life!

  46. Finally got a chance to fly it a bit on short lines. Used my travel frame. Winds near Boston today were 18-25 and whipping pretty soundly.. Kite was great. It ate the gusts like they weren't even there. Nice balanced pressure across the entire sail area. Kite responded like a whip when the proper inputs were given. reaction time on short lines was crazy

  47. Some days I laugh... the wind apps show great conditions and real life is another story. Today was one of those.. App showed 10/15 @ ese, ideal for this ne Florida stretch of beach.. real life was 0 to maybe 8mph..if that... but the direction was spot on. So with optimism,I took the 12 Phantom with some proper spars installed and I set up anyways being I was there. I wanted to finally fly larger than 12m with the low conditions...but alas I was on a small bar...and didn't feel like any over the bar line grabbing today...as I rode fixed bridles yesterday Trusty battery back up fan got me filled and airborne...without the fan it wouldn't have happened. Once airborne and the twinskin moving ...riding began. Nothing spectacular but still achieving smiles. A small climb in wind and I headed for a wider stretch of beach about 1.5 miles away. Played there for a bit....and poof...nadda...not even a puff. Sunset was upon me, so I deflated and rolled up for the walk...2.2 miles later I felt redemption.A block from my "base" the wind was back and stronger than all evening..Still single digits, but high singles and that works for me. I quickly set back up once at the fan...All I could think was one more ride before sunset. I got that and more! Rode until dark and enjoyed some park and ride fun with some beautiful colors over the horizon. Last ride got me the best casual speeds of the day.. A quick glimpse of that ride on Instagram. In the end... never give up. The rewards are always worth the effort. The struggles will only make you a better pilot. Be it buggies.. stunt kites...and yes even SLK. Ride on... until then
