  7. Update. Surgery went really well. Home recouping, limited in weight allowed on repaired leg. Stiff and sore, but still a bit mobile. 3 weeks check up to see if I can put more weight on it. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers!

  8. My 1st kite was a Widow ng. Could be the kite or maybe I'm just special but I learned 3 tricks on it the very 1st day . Nose dive left, nose dive center and nose dive right. 2nd day I learned how to repair a broken LS.

  12. I've grown tired of attaching and detaching my lights, so I'm building one for a permanent home. Fingers crossed. 11 panels (5/1/5). Based roughly on the B-series because of the straight lines, but slightly different dimensions to help with the weight of the rig, plus some other refinements. Planning on midnight blue, fluorescent green, and white/reflective trim. The lights will ring the kite and be held in with the sheer trim. Here are the lights in action, held with packing tape on a Djinn.

  13. I flew a kite today. It had been some time since I had. The winds of Spring were calling & I had an old friend with me. The Zephyr knows me well. It was my first good kite. I am not a great flier but modesty is a good trait for someone always learning. Don't know why it had been so long, probably over a year. Maybe life seems tough at times or has too many distractions but there is really no reason not to indulge. I had missed the wind on the back of my neck. I did seem to still remember how to not crash. Pulled off a few tricks, made some blunders but did some successful ground recoveries. I enjoyed the concentration involved that allowed me to focus & zone out into the moment of flight. The winds were fickle as the usually are here in the mountains. Varied from dead calm to gusts that made me park at the top with the lines whining. Love the whine. Hope I don't have such a pause again. If I always carry some kites with me I will surely fly some more. Best wishes from SHBKF

  14. This is sooooo awesome. I have seen the Djinn fly so many times. Looking forward to it. Perfect timing in that I am retiring from my day job this Friday and our Dual Line kite team (Austin End Of the Line) has two confirmed festivals as things start to open up. Kitefest Louisian in Baton Rouge and a Balloon festival in Shreveport Louisiana.

  17. Well...here we go! In proper form, I listened to you all. I started by contacting Lam Hoac. Check out the custom I-T-M (Intense Trick Machine) he made for me. I gave him complete artistic license. Also, if anyone needs a KILLER kite bag, Lam crushes it! I have two Prism roll-up bags, but the bag I got from Lam is like nothing I've ever seen. I'll keep you updated as I grow my collection again. I think a Moonie Mamba and a Benson. For the Benson, I can't decide if I should go old-school-original Outer Space, or go new-tech supernova. Anyone with Benson experience, I'd love a review.

  22. Hello. I've got a post in the Introductions forum that gives a little history of what brings me to the KiteLife forums. That will give a little insight into myself and my Dad, Gene, who got me involved with kites back in the 80's. As mentioned in my post, Dad passed last year. He left behind a collection of over 170 kites. Primarily stunt kites, dating back as far as the 80's, but primarily the 90's. I intend to keep some of these, and I could use some advice now that I don't have Dad to consult anymore. I don't want to pick them based just on color/design. I do know how to fly, but it's been a while. I want to get back into it, and broaden my horizons as far as the types I fly. I'm not well-versed on the ins-and-outs of what each kite is best for, so I'm not quite sure which to keep. I'm attaching a PDF inventory of his collection. Feel free to educate me if you think I've identified any of them incorrectly. Dad left some notes, but not on every kite, so I relied on internet searches to fill in the rest, and I'm sure I got some wrong. Here's a list of what I'm looking for as far as what I want to actually fly, and for which I need recommendations: A kite for strong winds - I always liked a kite that required some strength to handle A kite for light winds/ultralight A kite for somewhere in-between - My upper body strength is actually pretty lame. So I'm not always going to want one that requires a lot of muscle. But light wind kites sometimes just don't feel great to me. My main go-to in the past was always an original model Skyburner, because that's what Dad gave me, LOL An indoor kite A quad - If there are such things, both a strong & a light wind models. Quads are one type of kite I never managed to find time to learn, so I don't know if they come in both types A rokkaku If there's a category I'm missing that you think I should have to complete my collection of flyers, I'd love your insight. I will be keeping a few single line kites, but that's primarily going to be based on design, so I'm not looking for insight into those, unless you want to share something. Thank you! 32. I would like to propose a new topic relating to the use of 3D Printing technology to create parts for building and customizing kites. I have almost a year of experience with this technology, using it every day, and would like to share what I have learned with those of you who are interested in the subject. I am an engineer by profession and finding this new tool has been the realization of a dream of a lifetime... If I can sketch an idea on paper and then create a 3D model of it with software then I can hold a physical example of my idea in my hand after printing it. Many ideas can be used as functional parts rather than just prototypes. Surprisingly, the technology is rather affordable for the consumer these days. But there is a moderate degree of skill that you will need to have to design and print your own parts. Printing parts that others have designed is less complicated but also requires some computer skill and skill in using your particular printer. If it is agreed that this is an interesting topic, then please reply and I will give an introduction to my setup and workflow and some examples of parts that can be made. I’m looking forward to your replies. I am very enthusiastic about the subject and hope that your input will also help me gain knowledge. Regards, Segel

  34. I've been waiting for this question... 😂 Short answer, no. Kite Forge doesn't make "products" or "toys" for consumer use... Everything we make (and will make) fits specifically into use scenarios for me, Brett or our other house pilots, and the little quad kites just don't perform in any circumstance in such a way that is of any use to me (severe lack of natural precision) - no desire for a "wheeeee!" kite in the bag, we're all "drivers" or work directly with an incoming class of pilot (teaching skills). The next items on the white board, in no particular order or timing... Djinndoor (0-4 indoor / outdoor quad) Full size dual line focused on balance of team / precision and tricks Beginner quad line (same great performance, lower price point by way of material quality and reduced build details) Beginner dual line line kite Indoor single line glider Kite bag Dogstake unit Truly, all designed to fill out our own quivers very specifically, then made available to those who connect with the same things or needs that we do. 🙏🏻

  35. I finally got my Djinn out to fly. Winds were a little light and gusty and it wasn’t a flight worth an audience. But it felt good. Hopefully when the temperatures start to cool down to a more moderate level, I will be flying it more.

  37. Really, I’m quite eager to get this one, to close the circle. I started out years ago with the conviction: -”Naah, QLKs are for others - I’m a DLKer only”. OK, tried QLKs and “got stuck” there for soon three years now, but for a long time thought that zero wind was not for mortals. Then I got properly started with indoor/zero wind piloting about half a year ago, still sticking to QLKs. While keeping a zero/low wind focus (the available nearby parking makes this kind of a natural choice) a return to DLKs could be through the Kaiju (which will obviously arrive here in Northern Europe any time soon b.t.w. 🙂 ).

  43. Been lurking here a while and decided to pass along some of my experiences. 4 or 5 years ago we took the boat across the sound and went to the beach in Corolla, I saw a guy flying a weird looking kite that could back up and do weird stuff, watched for a while and was intrigued, the flier said come try it,, so I did ,, didn't go well , i had flown only duel stunt kites and nosed in his kite, I asked about buying one and he referenced his shop in Corolla. As it turns out I think it was Eliot Shook whom let me try his kite. I did not pursue quad flying until recently, covid and search for a new hobby played a big part. I purchased a full sail then a vented, from online venders and am currently thrashing them around, (at one point today my anemometer said wind 2.8 gusting to 17 mph). The tutorial videos here have been a big help, and a member named Riff Clown who happens to live very close to my mom, has given me some good pointers and was generous enough to lend me one of his vented diamond kites, which I am practicing on also. He also let me fly some of his other custom builds which all looked great. I will own a Shook mesh at some point and probably a Riff custom also. Something that seems strange to me: when watching many videos of the master fliers (will not mention names, because I would leave out someone) it seems as though most of the passerby people are uninterested, I would be awe struck and taking videos like crazy, guess the old phrase different strokes for different folks makes more sense to me now. Over the last few weeks ( got first kite DEC. 26) I have learned the very basic flying skills, still having a hard time with inverted hover but I am persistent and think I will get better. Any way havin fun and as long as I am slightly improving will continue to enjoy it. Ej
