Kite Fun Fly and Competition in Sunny Florida This Winter 14th Annual Treasure Island Kite Festival and Competition on Treasure Island, FL. Jan 14 and 15th 2012. Enjoy a sky filled with kites, some as big as a house on the beach behind the Thunderbird Beach Resort, 10700 Gulf Blvd.Treasure Island, FL 33706 THE TREASURE ISLAND SPORT KITE CHAMPIONSHIP returns in 2012 as part of the annual Treasure Island Kite Festival. Following the successful revival of the competition in 2010, TISKC has reclaimed its prominence as one of the premier sport kite events of the year. Competitors from up and down the East Coast will gather at Treasure Island, FL during the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend for two days of excellent competition with plenty of time to socialize on one of the best kite flying beaches in the country. A full slate of dual-line and multi-line sport kite competitions will be offered on Saturday and Sunday. Events will be more completely integrated into the festival this time around, which promises to bring a larger audience to watch the dazzling acrobatic displays. As with previous years, TISKC will be offering Team Multiline Precision and Ballet as disciplines! Given the growing popularity of group multiline flying and the growing experience out there, this event will be spectacular. TISKC will also be offering a novice class competition for multi-line precision and ballet. If you haven’t participated in a multi-line competition, this is your chance! Individual precision events for Experienced and Masters classes will be run according to program precision (formerly called league-style) rules. This format has proven to be more audience friendly and allows for a speedier running of the competition. Plans are afoot to bring back the auction and dinner this year! On Saturday night, plan to attend these events in the Thunderbird Conference Room. Updates on times and the meal will be provided as the details get nailed down. Of course, Monday is a holiday, so we hope you will plan on staying an extra day for recreational flying. January weather in Florida is usually ideal for kites, with mild temperatures and steady winds, so take full advantage of the opportunity to fly on the white sandy beach while many parts of the country will be covered in white stuff of a different kind! This event is sanctioned by the Eastern League Sport Kite Association. Competing here will qualify you for Eastern League points, provided you are a member of the League before you compete. You may join at the event, or contact Jared Haworth, Eastern League Commissioner, at elcommissioner@gmail.com. For more information, visit the League's web site, www.easternleague.net.

Event date: is February 21st, most likely at Kite Henge (near Tacoma WA). Instructors: John Barresi & Tristan Underwood This is an ideal place for fliers of ANY skill level to learn on any type of kite, be it dual or quad line... Between the two instructors, we can cover any aspect from solo to team flying, low wind flying, urban skills, dogstake, tricks, you name it, we can probably help a lot. As always, a casual clinic has no fixed registration fee... Its an open format with no class structure, fliers are encouraged to attend and pick our brains for any type of sport kiting information or skills they may wish to learn - tips are encouraged to defray expenses, but only whatever you feel the instruction and information was worth to you - the whole idea of a casual clinic is making instruction accessible and affordable to any flier. We'll be as we are, kite fliers, and circulate around the field through the day as we work with each flier one on one, and if there is enough interest in basic team flying we can do 2-3 fliers at a time, easy and fun! Wind is what it is... With most types of kites, there are a lot of essential and very doable adjustments that can extend our fun wind range both higher and lower than before. NOTE: It may be to your benefit to have a 3-4 things / goals clearly in mind, always easier to share knowledge when it's being tugged on.

If you're a Rev enthusiast, come play in Long Beach WA during the Washington State International Kite Festival (http://www.kitefestival.com)... NOTE: Actual record attempts will likely be held on Thu/Fri/Sat, but those new to GRID format are advised to come a couple days early to learn and practice. == Supporting our efforts in various ways: Revolution Kites - celebrating 25 years in 2013! http://www.revkites.com/ Kitelife Magazine - kiting info online! http://www.kitelife.com/ http://www.learnkites.com/ The Kite Shoppe - your source for Rev stuff! http://www.thekiteshoppe.com/ World Kite Museum - kite history and fun! http://www.worldkitemuseum.com/ == We're looking to coordinate the world's largest ever Rev Mega Fly with 100 pilots, 100 kites, 400 individual strings to make a grand total 48,000 feet (over 9 miles) of kite line and 500 spars. There is a system, and it works! Conceived by Felix Mottram and his UK teammates (The Decorators), grid format allows large group of Rev fliers to work in tighter formation, with generally simpler turns than typical team flying. Videos from 2010 WSIKF (64 kite record) https://www.youtube....h?v=_h4ci9OMjcs https://www.youtube....h?v=5OIds0BBhRs https://www.youtube....h?v=0gnl8PdFrq0 With 36 additional kites (now 10x10) going into the new record, things will be MUCH tighter and we'll need to work on closer body spacing and VERY clean 180 turns to make it all work properly. == LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES First and foremost, we're kitefliers looking to have a good time and do something really cool as a group... All in, through and around that, will be some of the best camaraderie and skill exchange you'll ever experience. As long as you're aware of your surroundings and keen to keep your feet out of lines, we WELCOME anyone with an interest in Revs... Come on over, make some friends, take a lesson with just about any one of the master pilots in attendance and even try your hand at a little basic team flying! == SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS For those serious about getting involved, I recommend arriving no later than Wednesday night but Monday or Tuesday is best if you can make it - the festival is 7 days long... Thu/Fri/Sat are usually the days for our record attempts. The actual job each pilot will be doing isn't so difficult, mostly composed of: - Solid speed control (slow/med/fast) - Stable hovers (less than one meter of wiggle room) - Clean 180 turns (up/down) without losing control - Flying straight lines up/down/right/left - Flying diagonal lines in most directions - Slow reverse ability right/left/down and most diagonal A good look through these videos (2008 record of 47 kites) will give you an idea of how far things can go, if we work, learn and have fun at this together... http://www.youtube.c...h?v=BGygKnDj0eg http://www.youtube.c...h?v=vMOXesdyJFA And just to warp your mind a little more... http://www.youtube.c...h?v=1qbCgPJ8LN4 The key is to pick one kite in the video and watch what they actually do in terms of individual skills, don't let get lost in the big picture... It looks amazing because EVERYONE is doing simple things together, as a group, under solid leadership. == AIRPORT The nearest major airport is PDX (Portland, OR USA) at about 2:20 distance from Long Beach... SEA (Seattle, WA USA) is not too bad either at about 2:45 away from Long Beach. HOTEL Depending on where you're coming from, you might try some of the usual online booking places like (www.hotels.com, www.orbitz.com, etc) but a lot of the Long Beach hotels are not in those systems... They're nice, privately owned lodging that can be browsed more effectively here: http://www.funbeach.com/ ** or ** http://goo.gl/maps/XWECZ (WSIKF is held between Bolstad Ave and Syd Snyder Dr) == Stay tuned to our Facebook event page for more discussion, and feel free to add some of your own! https://www.facebook.com/events/414867438580073/
