First non-tails homemade kite -
A clinic with JB will not only improve your skill set, it will change the way you think about kiting as a whole..

@happysuperbutton Revs and similar quad kites most often use PC31 Icarex which is a Ripstop Poly. The Rev EXP varies somewhat depending on when it was made.. The Freilein Vertigos are said to be PC20 which is lighter but still unproven in the eyes of many.. The Exodus is the more familiar PC31 type material.. Finally the Phoenix I'm pretty sure is Icarex/Poly as well. There is also a material lighter and stronger than either out there called Cuben Fiber which is a dyneema based weave. Very expensive and limited options there though.. Everything is about balance of strength vs weight vs material characteristics.. My Sails from Tails projects are just having fun with materials that produce interesting designs.. It all started with me wanting to make my own mesh..

They are all ripstop nylon kite tails from Gomberg.. This is my first kite NOT made from tails.. Biggest difference between the two materials though is how they handle moisture.. Ripstop Nylon will saturate, get heavy and stretch.. Ripstop Poly not so much..
-
The Overlap actually back-lights better than I expected. All Done except the bridles.. Hopefully first flight on Sunday..(or Monday)

Looking to name my first non-tails project. It's also my first venture into Ripstop Poly. Would love suggestions from you. Simple plan is to overlap the panels for additional strength. Simplistic 2 piece sail with Ripstop Nylon LE. Will use Dacron Ribbon for reinforcement points. P200 Frame is planned since I have that on hand but a P90 or even hybrid frame might also be in the future for this wing.. Hopefully will complete this project over the Holiday weekend..

for sale Quantum Radian SE / Osprey
riffclown replied to JaseRicco's topic in Kites for Sale, Swap or Trade
I stand by my original advice There is no kite that does it all and no substitute time at the handles.. Keep what you have and learn whenever/wherever you can.. The day it"clicks" will make it all worthwhile.. Don't rush it.. it will happen.. -
Moved from Quad Heads..

Be careful flying around cows.. look what happened to this guy,,

Looks like this is focused only on Kiteboarding LEI kites???

A few things I've observed Ask someone to record you flying your kite and they will invariably record "you" flying your kite. No matter how well you fly, the guy with the 2 line delta and 100' tail will get all the attention and his pic will be in the newspaper.. The dog which BY LAW (it says so on the sign) is supposed to be on a leash at the beach will invariably get "you" in trouble for yelling at him when he's trying to mark your expensive kites as his property. People are generally oblivious to the dangers of hanging out directly underneath a large SLK Whale that's 25' off the ground.. They think of it as "shade" General populace thinks kites "all kites" should still be less than $5 They are also completely unaware of the dangers of kite line. They duck under the barrier tape, walk across your field, trip on your line and cut their ankle and it's "your" fault.. The line on a $5 foil can slice through Skybond or LPG like a razor blade. And like you observed, it doesn't matter where you set up, that's their spot now..

Jockey's Ridge State Park - Nags Head, NC
riffclown replied to Reef Runner's topic in Favorite Kite Fields
I know Paul and I know Jockey's Ridge. I understand completely where he's coming from and on a least a few levels I agree with the assessment.. If you don't make the equipment truck up, it's quite a trek and even a light load starts to weigh you down.. Like many other things in travel, it's a great place to be, just not the most fun to get to. I've had my almost fainting moment there a few years ago.. It's like a desert in the middle of an oasis. It's still one of my favorite places to fly just not looking forward to the trek up and down the dunes. Only difference is I love the howling winds and my quiver shows it. That even all by itself makes it well worth it for me.. I still plan to go to OBSKC, but my personal kite load will be much MUCH smaller with the change in venue. For the event the other site is a much better fit. Sandspurs and all. -

Sorry you feel that way but I also very much understand WHY you feel that way. For the OBSKC, I every much preferred the other site or Wright Memorial.. -
A few more of these have been spotted in the wild.. @Deke Haid and @windpoacher have published either pics or video of their adventures.. Looking forward to seeing more..

Full Sail #10 83.5" Leading Edge.. Once again constructed from Gomberg Transition Kite Tails. -
Full Sail # 10 found the air today.. It was still air but it was "still" air..
-
This one is a bit differently sized than my typical builds.. It is a 83.5" Leading Edge. Midway between the 1.5 and 2.0 sizes.. This will either be my new night kite or the middle kite in a future progressive stack. Temporary bridles at the moment since I've never tied bridles this size. ZERO wind but still started with a toss, followed by a ground catch..

Extremely common questions in the arena of DLK are the Low Cost Low Wind kite. (The word low typically applies to one or the othe,r never both) the unicorn of the "do everything" kite. (Simply does not exist. Performance parameters are typically a balance of numerous factors. Each one affects the others in different and often negative ways) The bottom line is you typically get about what you pay for and if you are determined to get just one kite, you should decide the singular set of conditions you will be flying in. Once this particular item is determined, the low cost low wind question usually follows, and is often followed by how to extend the wind range without buying another kite. Yhere is no substitute or 3rd party opinion that can compensate for time spent on the handles, whether it's your kite or someone elses.

OK, I seem to have enough to do about 7-8 kites before I have to re-engineer the instructions..
-
I said the same thing until I needed a bigger truck and larger storage unit..
-
Mine never hits commercial travel.. it only has to keep my gear dry in the back of my truck.. I've just about outgrown its capacity at this point though.
