  1. Firefox may have problems with default settings and sites, such as mine, created with MS Publisher. This may be a fix: In firefox, Go to Tools > Options > Web tab and uncheck "rely on vml..." (Pub 2003) and "allow png...". Bob Moore Are you sure you're thinking of Firefox? I don't have a Tools -> Options menu, but rather Edit -> Preferences. And in preferences there is no Web tab. And in about:config, there's nothing that references vml. Plus, I don't think I have to check anything to make PNG work; they've just worked by default for years now. Those sound like they may be Internet Explorer settings. The VML used by MS Publisher 2002 and later doesn't work in browsers other than IE. It sounds like there may be a "Publish to the web" option in Publisher which generates a page without the VML, which would presumably then be usable in Firefox, Opera, etc.
  2. Sounds like an interesting endeavor! I'd like to read more of your site, but the navigation links on the left side don't work at all in Firefox.
  3. The music that plays when you load up the site is annoying. Websites should never, ever play music or video automatically. The browser for images is hard to use. It seems to.. drift, depending on where I put my mouse. There's no way I see to quickly scroll through the images. Personally, I much prefer relatively simple sites without Flash. But at the least it should be easier to browse through the photos. A few more photos of each kite would also be nice.
  4. Ah, by blacklist I meant one maintained by someone else. We use one for the IRC network I co-run (Foonetic) which catches the vast majority of spammers, since they're mostly coming through open proxies and botnets. The particular bit of software that does it is specific to IRC, but maybe there's something similar. Such systems are also used for email, e.g. the Spamhaul XBL. Sadly, it doesn't look like such a system exists for IP board, but maybe I just missed it in my cursory search through their forums.
  5. Wow, that's a lot of spam! I guess it's gotten even worse for forums since I last administered one. Good job on keeping the forums so spam free. I wonder if there's any other settings changes that might cut down on the number of posts/users you have to hand filter? For instance, one of the many DNS blacklists.
  6. The requirement for not only the standard captcha and confirmation email, but also for an administrator to manually check off on any new accounts, seems likely to cut down on active discussion in these forums. I know that when I started creating my account, I planned to comment in an ongoing discussion, but I don't even remember what that discussion was any longer, let alone what I wanted to say. In most forums, I can go from registering to posting in 5 minutes or less. I've run forums, and mailservers, and mailing lists, so I'm aware of the huge problem spam presents. Having run them in the past, it seems unlikely that it will help much; the captcha and confirmation email are usually enough. The goal of spam prevention measures is to stop spam while blocking as little ham - that is, legitimate messages - as possible. The requirement for manual approval seems like a step too far.
