  1. Bear Lake North Shore Kite Festival I’d like to let everyone know that we will be starting up a new kite festival to take place at Bear Lake in Idaho. Date and Time: 8/15 and 8/16/2015 from 10am until 6pm. Location: North shore of Bear Lake in Idaho (near St Charles ID) at the Bear Lake State Park http://www.bearlakekitefestival.org This is a great location to fly kites. The lake is about 20 miles by 3 miles with bright blue water. This time of year the water is low so the beach area is huge. The park also allows people to drive right down on the beach so you can drive right up to the flying field both days. The park is waiving the $5/day fee as long as you let them know you are there to fly kites (celebrating the Park and Recreation’s 50 year anniversary). There will be a flying field open for multi-line flying and demos as well as plenty of room on the beach for any/all single line kites. We will be giving kites away to the first 70 kids each day. We will have music playing all day long on both days. Please consider attending and supporting this new kite venue and event and let me know if you have any questions!
  2. I know this is an old thread but I want to point out a few things.... The proper way to use a sand bag is to dig a hole with the down wind side being completely vertical. Place the bag in the hole and then use that sand to bury it. The kite would then either need to lift the bag out of the hole or through the sand wall itself. This creates _much_ more resistance then just filling the bag. The issue I see with bags is that at some point they need to be tipped and emptied. Should be easy enough in most cases but this is why most sand anchors are open pieces of fabric... it's easier to empty them.
  3. Old... old thread but it did not get many replies so I thought I'd revive it with my own post... Dedicated sewing room (live alone in a 5 bedroom house so why not). Currently have an old Morris machine set up for some straight stitching but I don't use it much and need to pack it up. Older White machine with it's own table and the newest addition is a Pfaff 1221 (1221 is a 1222 but not portable). I mainly use the Pfaff as I _love_ the walking foot and it's so very smooth. I do have a couple of folding tables set up with thin Malamine sheets on top of them for hot cutting. I like using them as they are only about $6 each and hide away easily. Though, these days I rarely hot cut as I usually edge bind the material. I recall Gary Engvall saying years ago that he cold cuts and has never had an issue. If I was appliqueing something, I'd hot cut. I've made several Rocs, several Rev type kites, a few deltas and 3 larger kites (WK240, WK100 and Stealth 190). Next jump I want to make is applique. Nothing big... just some color change in the skins, stars, etc. I find kite building very relaxing. At least the sewing part. I also live the engineering aspect of kite building. It can really be complicated. It also helps with the appreciation that other people put into their kites.

    Form a Club

First and foremost you need to have a lot of one thing... perseverance! I'll be honest... if you don't have a boat load of that and a little more then you may not want to try starting a club. For those people who happen to live around already established kite flying areas, thank your lucky stars! I've been there and its very nice. Four years ago I helped start the Utah Kite Fliers. It started with an idea that there must be other kite fliers out there in the area and that we just needed a way to find each other. Here are my recommendations: Find a good place to fly. Do this first. Plan on flying there every so often. You will probably be flying alone but people will see you. This is your "core" activity. If you can fly every other Sunday or some other set time, do it. Post this info on the AKA website and also as many kite forums as possible. Invite people out in your posts or ask them to email you. What did I mention in my opening remark? You need to keep this up even if it does not seem to be going anywhere. You may want to register a domain name and put up a simple website. Add this website to you posts so that people will find you on a search. If there are events like balloon festivals in your area contact the person in charge and ask them if you can fly some kites. Be prepared to explain what this means or they will think of Charlie Brown. Network! I met Tom on GWTW (?) and then in person in FL and now he has been so very kind to mention my name to people in this area. I see John B a couple of times a year in odd places and he always has time to talk to me. Don't expect things to happen over night or in one summer. Keep in mind that its important that YOU fly! It starts with one person. If you give up then it wont happen. At the end of the day you still got to do what you like to do... fly kites. Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk
  5. Just as long as wde brought this topic back to life.... I find IE use slightly above FF and then Chrome. Of course, I think I'm the one making Chrome use to high on the boards I check. Running it on Win and of course a Chromium machine. Wanna kick people in the nads when I get a pop up window telling me I need IE v.X. Climb out of your hole and see the rest of the world! 6. I do find myself using it a lot. When you are using several forums its a _real_ time saver! Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk
