Kite carnival joy for Putrajaya youth gathering KUALA LUMPUR: The Putrajaya Kite Association (PPPj) will organise a ‘Mari Terbang’ (Come Fly) kite carnival in conjunction with the Gathering of a Million Youths 2012 programme at Precinct 4 in Putrajaya from May 23 to 27. Association president Nasri Ahmad said various kinds of traditional, modern and giant kites would be flown during the carnival. “We will fly more than 20 giant squid kites of various kinds, the Rokkaku kites and other big kites,” he said in a statement. Nasri said more than 100 kite flyers from Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand were expected to join their Malaysian counterparts at the carnival, bringing along their own kites and concepts. Other activities during the carnival include an exhibition, fireworks, a kite-making workshop, kite painting for children and a photography contest, he said. “The highlight will be the ‘Karunia dari Angkasa’ (Gift from Space) for visitors in the form of souvenirs dropped periodically from giant kites up in the sky,” he said. — Bernama Read more: http://www.theborneo.../#ixzz1uwmeQ7UB
  13. http://www.seacoasto...-NEWS-120519954 http://www.seacoasto...-NEWS-205150307 By Aaron Sanborn asanborn@seacoastonline.com May 11, 2012 1:13 PM EXETER — Hundreds of kites will be flying over Hampton Beach next weekend in support of those battling against cancer. Exeter Hospital’s Beyond the Rainbow Fund will hold its annual Kites Against Cancer fund-raiser on Sunday, May 20 from noon-3 p.m., near the new Seashell Complex on Hampton Beach. The event will feature kite flying, face-painting, raffles, refreshments and music provided by 107.1 FM WERZ radio personalities. Those looking to get a jump on the event are welcomed to take part in Zumba on the beach at 11 a.m. Jennifer Cook, an instructor at Synergy Health & Fitness, will be leading the Zumba session. This year marks the fourth Kites Against Cancer event, which is the Beyond the Rainbow Fund’s largest fund-raiser of the year. Hospital spokesperson Ryan Lawrence calls the fund-raiser an inspiring community event that continues to grow each year and brings families and people of all ages together. “Everyone involved shares a collective passion of helping make a difference and supporting oncology patients in need,” he said. “The event has a lot of symbolism and for many individuals represents hope, remembrance, inspiration and support.” All proceeds from the event will support the Beyond the Rainbow Fund at Exeter Hospital, a fund that was founded by late Hampton resident Anne-Marie Viviano in 2002, to assist uninsured and under-insured oncology patients at Exeter Hospital with medical expenses and any other practical needs that may become unmanageable during their treatment. Lawrence said the fund supports needs such as transportation, child care, wigs, fuel, medication co-pay and heating to name a few. “Through the fund and together with the community, we collectively strive to help carry out Anne-Marie’s aspiration to provide support and lessen financial stress for oncology patients in need,” he said. Kites for the event are available in advance at Me & Ollie’s Cafes in Exeter and Greenland, Synergy Health & Fitness Center and the Exeter Hospital gift shop. The cost is $8 for one kite and $15 for two. A one-week free membership to Synergy Health & Fitness is available with purchase of each kite. Lawrence said he has been amazed not only by the past support of the event but by how the community continues to rally in support of the Beyond the Rainbow Fund. “The event continues to gain interest and support to the point where we now have individuals who have attended in the past contacting us several months in advance wanting to know the date of the event in anticipation,” he said. “Despite the challenging economic times we continue to receive donations for the Beyond the Rainbow Fund, a testament to how loyal and supportive individuals are in the Seacoast region to helping those in need.” For information, call Exeter Hospital at 580-6668 or email vbrown@ehr.org.
  14. http://www.northumbe...in-campbellford CAMPBELLFORD -- Ferris Provincial Park plans to invade the skies on May 27 with their annual kite day. Friends of Ferris Park board members Barb Hogan, Sandy Chapman and Carol Robertson are in charge of kite construction, for the annual event, and with this being their 14th year, they have got it down to a science. "We hold it in the field south of the main entrance, to Ferris Park, and children of all ages come from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They get their kites, decorate them, then we put tails on them and they go fly a kite," Ms. Chapman said, adding there is no charge for the event, but donations will be accepted. The event has been a huge hit in the past, Ms. Chapman said, and this year they are putting together 150 kites and are confident no kite will be left behind. "There have been more than 400 people come out. It's a real family affair," Ms. Hogan said. Kite day draws people from all over the area and along with a barbecue, it makes for a great day, she said. Ms. Hogan added kite day is just one of the many activities they do to promote the park that has more than 163 camp sites, many walking trails, the Ranny Falls and the suspension bridge, just to name a few, she said. The main ingredient for the kites is tyvek house wrap, which is used to wrap lumber for shipping, and all the area lumber stores have been wonderful in donating their used materials as well as other local businesses who have made donations, she said. However the three women have to still cut all the kites out and attach the dowels to reinforce the design so when it comes to kite day, all that has to be done after the kids decorate their kites is attach the tails, she said. Inspired by Fred and Carol Ellis who got kite day off the ground 14 years ago, the three women have taken up the task of aerodynamic construction with enthusiasm. For them, promoting the park is a pleasure because it provides something for everyone and it's a real jewel in the Trent Hills landscape.
  15. A: According to the National Climatic Data Center's list of annual average wind speeds, the windiest U.S. city is Dodge City, Kansas, with an average speed of 13.9 mph. Other windy cities include Amarillo, Texas (13.5 mph) and Rochester, Minn. (13.1 mph.). The windiest "big" cities are New York City (LaGuardia Airport) and Oklahoma City, which both have an average annual wind speed of 12.2 mph. The "windy city" of Chicago isn't as high on the list as you might think. It's average annual wind speed is 10.3 mph. So next time you're cruising across I-40 stop in (Amarillo) and fly for a bit. Lucky me:) Source: USA Today ((Answered by Doyle Rice, USATODAY.com weather editor., June 23, 2005)
