  1. Was flying for 3-4 hours on Sunday. You just can't be a wus about things!
  2. I only have one Rev, so I'm not going to take any chances with those rods. That's why I'm looking for a beater set that I can 'experiment' with. I need a crash test dummy is what I'm saying, but I don't have the $100 to just go out and buy a new set.
  3. I'm still looking for rods and a bridle that I can work with to be the skeleton for my minimalist creation. Anybody got a beater set that's taking up space that could be occupied by something new and flashy?
  4. My 1.7 Flexfoil came with 150# top lines, and 90# brake lines and the instructions are quite clear about not mixing them up - color coded and everything. Given the pull I've already experienced with it, I wouldn't go any lighter. I've used those lines on my Rev on some high wind days too. For my Chinook wind flyer (custom design in the making) I'm going to 150's all around. But I don't expect it to launch in less than 30mph wind and I want to keep flying up into the 50's. (Local conditions).
  5. I thought that was what beach flying was all about?!?
  6. I would love some fabric scraps, although I'm not familiar with that type. The red & white colours would be very appropriate for a Canadian - maybe I could do a small maple leaf in the center where the Rev logo usually is, with vertical strips of fabric out on the wings. I'll PM you.
  7. Yup! All of you know where this is going then. We've had a week of Chinook winds here - 50-60 kph gusting here, and 70-80 kph a little further south. These are the warm dry winds that can take us from -30 when you go to bed, to hearing water running thru the eavestrough at 3 AM. I want something I can control in that sort of wind. We get a dozen or so of these sessions every winter. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinook_wind] The French stars really intrigue me: I'm actually going to try a reverse experiment where I put on as little sail as I can, then add to it bit by bit until it flies. Wish me luck!
  8. I want to try an experiment in venting, but I'm on a very limited budget, so I'm looking for a beat up sail and a heavy set of rods. I'd even like some "tomato stakes" if you've got them. 8-) I think I could work around even a ripped or torn sail, so search the bottoms of your kite bags and help me make my high wind dreams come true. Thanks Kelly
  9. If I'm logging in from work, I'll show up as a guest since I can't remember what I set the password to! Luckily the iPad remembers, so I just post from there.
  10. Nope! ALL THE WAY north! It wants to come over the border. (I desperately hope!)
  11. That's East coast Canadian talk - you wouldn't hear that west of the Mississippi! Except for all the transplants that have come out here to work- then we have to teach them English all over again. 8-)
  12. Tilley has a great line of travel clothing that strikes a nice balance between presentable and casual - looking good but staying comfortable. Pricey but long lasting and worth it - like the hats that made their rep. And Tilley is proudly Canadian to boot!
  13. All the advice here seems to be to stake the handles at the top line. The flexfoil handles actually have a stake loop built into the handle at the bottom! and they explain that you want to stake the kite with the brake lines full on to prevent premature take offs. Is this a style thing or why the difference? As you can see, the handles really dictate hand position- you virtually HAVE to fly with your finger over the top line and thumb on the top of the handle. Maybe a good way to teach beginners good habits? Kelly
  14. Cool. What's the blue & yellow thing next to you?
  15. I was flying today with the Sting lines on the Rev with the new Magic sticks. The flexfoil line set has red and blue top lines that stand out nicely on the snow. The brake lines though are white and that made it tough to see wraps and twists. There was 0-5 kph winds - next to nothing - and if I hadn't been reading what all of you manage to do, I wouldn't have bothered going out. But your stories and Paul's claims about the magic sticks and low winds made me want to see what the fuss is about. It was truly amazing to me! The kite was finding wind that I couldn't even feel. None of the flights were long, and my over controlling was obvious in that light air, but I was in control about 75% of the time and that's a new record for this newbie! I also think that the time on the soft Sting has lightened my touch and helped with the quad line thinking. It's nice to be going UP the learning curve.
  16. Mine arrived today & I got them installed even though I have the travel rod set - everything still works & packs. Flying may have to wait a bit for the weather though, since it was close to -30C with the wind chill and that is just too much to bear.
  17. The site worked well via touch on the iPad and adjusted appropriately to portrait and landscape. Congrats!
  18. Since you opened the rules for this one, I am most certainly in! When I win the Rev, I'll have something nice to put it in. 8-)
  19. Scary scary stuff then! (Boris Karloff voicing) I've seen vids with people holding with wheels in the air - they're doing it just with controlling kite lift?!? I'm seriously impressed!
  20. Snow off the path was too deep for scudding. My kite is too small for real kite jumping but I was leap frogging in the gusts to tame it!
  21. Sorry guys - Burple is MY colour and I have beginners luck on my side!
  22. I'll second that! Paul is a Jedi and a gentleman - he flies with the Force. Thanks again for the help Paul.
  23. Yup. I've crashed mine so hard it sounded like a gun shot, but the kite is good as new and still has lots to teach me. I also wouldn't hesitate to hand over the controls to anyone to them try it out, because I really think it's bullet proof. I have a Flexifoil Sting I'm happy with http://www.flexifoil.com/powerkites/sting moderate price for a trainer and less than 2 sets of broken rods on the Rev. Even my wife understood those economics!
  24. My 1.7 quad foil has enough power in our standard 20-40 kph gusty winds to have me (220 lbs 100 kg) bounding & skidding. On wheels I would definitely be looking for brakes. Do those things have brakes?
