    UK Quad Clinic (Aug 30-31, 2018)

    Join us for two very full days of quad instruction on the beautiful shores of St Annes Beach in Lytham St Annes U.K. on Aug 30-31, 2018 immediately before the St Annes International Kite Festival! Instructors will be John Barresi (www.johnbarresi.com) and Josh Mitcheson. DAY ONE - AUG 30Quad 101: We'll be covering everything from absolute basics (pure beginner) all the way up through advanced techniques as well as the "weird stuff" like dogstake, short line catch and throw or any other quad line flight styles that may be of interest to the students, this first day is primarily focused on a full range of individual skills.DAY TWO - AUG 31Team Flying: Actually easier than it looks, team flying is proven to help your skills along much quicker while having a ton of fun at the same time in a very forgiving social environment - after having done 100+ clinics, it's very very rare that fliers didn't find a fair measure of success on the line with others - come on, pave the way for participating in a mega fly at your next event. Testimonials - http://tinyurl.com/jb-testimonials Sign up link - http://kitelife.com/forum/store/product/77-uk-quad-clinic-aug-30-31-2018/ == Ideal choice of equipment for this class is any model of Djinn, Revolution 1.5 (includes EXP, SLE, B-Series, printed specials, etc) or similar "1.5 platform" models (like Phoenix, Freilein, Polo, etc), designs like Fulcrum are also welcome - we'll go through painless equipment set up, good tuning and all aspects of flight - this clinic is not brand-centric, the goal here is to demystify quad flying and set you up to win at your own game. If you want to be able to try team flying, 40 metre / 120 ft lines (Spectra or Skybond material) are strongly suggested as the international team standard. Registration is $135 (approx £100) per person and includes full access to the clinic on both days (Thu 10a-4p / Fri 10a-3p)... Please note, there are ONLY 20 SPOTS available and we expect them to fill up very quickly. If you're coming, we start the "Quad 101" portion of this class at 10AM SHARP on Thursday morning... It's jam packed with invaluable information and first time attendees are encouraged to consider attendance mandatory, lots of little details that add dimension to your set up and flight experience. There will also be an add on indoor clinic on Wednesday Aug 29 from 4:30p to 9:30p, registration is $30 (15 spaces available) and covers 5 HOURS of indoor access and instruction. If you want some homework, you might also check out the tutorials available on KiteLife at http://learnkites.com/ and Kite Forge at http://kiteforge.com/help, can’t be too prepared! 3. I recently finished my first kite build, and I wanted to throw a public "Thank You!!" out to my kite making mentor: Elliot Shook, who allowed me to follow in his design footsteps, gave me guidance, techniques and encouragement. Without Elliot's generous mentorship this kite would likely still be flying only in my imagination. Holding my kite up to Elliot's work I still have a bit of fine tuning to do, but hey I still need an xtra vent, so I will get better. Elliot's eye for detail and build quality is definitely masterpiece material. I finished it just in time to take it to JB's OBX quad clinic and got to show it off to Elliot and all my best flying buddies. When the wind let up a bit (should have made an xtra vent for that weekend!!) I got to put it up with the sun behind it and it sparkled in the sun beautifully, and seemed to fly just fine. Nothing like seeing your own work flying and keeping up with the others in the sky. it flew just like a Shook should fly: smooth and un-phased by the bumps, in higher winds than I should have put it up in, and pretty as a can be. Also, Thank you to all of the folks who have pulled out kites to let me examine and photograph them, lent me your sails, and answered my questions about sewing and techniques - many of you were generous with your time and knowledge. The generosity of this community never fails to warm my heart and add lift to my efforts. To anyone thinking about taking the sewing plunge....I encourage it. I learned a ton, and kite making materials are not forgiving, so give yourself plenty of practice scraps and time. Oh the joy of flying a kite I built can not be described adequately. Thanks Again Elliot!

    fields in Cincoteague VA area?

    Hey all, Anyone know of a good flight field in the Chincoteague VA area? (town of not just National Park) I am headed there with friends the first weekend of June and can't resist coastal winds, which even my non-kiting friends know about me by now. Any advice on area fields for flight would be great. I am a little worried that the wild pony situation may = a no kites policy in some areas, but have not managed to find references to kites on any of the area web pages that I have read so far (including NPS ones) I don't want to be scaring ponies and making people mad. And, I gotta ask - Anyone fly quad around Chincoteague and want to fly with me for a couple of hours???? Can't ignore my friends for long, but we could amaze them nicely for a little while.

    3 days with my first Rev

    So I have had my Rev Reflex RX for 3 days and the wind has been ok to fly every day, I'm down in Plymouth in the UK and we never struggle for a sea breeze and living 500m from a huge set of public football pitches on top of a hill it is one of the best flying sites for miles. The first day the wind was a little light and variable with a 30 deg shift in direction which made my first experience of flying a quad a "challenge" to say the least only ever flying dual line stunt kites before it was mentally very challenging to get the inputs of the quad correct and when things happened quickly my instincts as a duel liner took over often ending on me "landing" unexpectedly, but as the evening wore on I started to get used to the feel of the extra bottom lines and could fly a box and figure 8 to some fashion. The second evening the wind was a little stronger and from a steady direction and I could really get the kite moving concentrating firstly on the box shapes then figure 8's the controls started to feel normal but not instinctive and I have to analyze what I did and how it affected the movement of the kite. Next was the hover which is much much harder than all the YouTube videos make it look! I had little success with it I feel that I must be over controlling the kite as it wants to race forwards but I can back it down very slowly but can't find the "bite" when it stops and wants to hover yet. Day 3 and after an hour of single line flying with my son the wind felt good and steady so I set up the Rev again and really had a great time oh god this is fun to fly really felt comfortable in flying it around hovers did start to come together, I found them much easier at the top and bottom of the wind window, on the edges it veered off sliding and in the centre it was like a caged animal trying to race upwards! I felt comfatable enough to try an inverted stop and managed it a few times nicely but I lost my nerve and was pulling up high and about 2m above the ground, it did stop wonderfully but again my brain started to hurt working out inputs of the kite flying backward and upsidedown! but fun none the less. Sorry to of gone on but I'm still buzzing from flying and had to tell someone... well anyone...you lot.... Matt

    GuildWorks Synergy Deca

    Hi Guys, I was going through my grandpa's old kites awhile ago and I found a really cool quad called a Synergy Deca by Guildworks. The problem is that this quad is the most confusing kite I have ever seen. Problems with putting it together are made worse by the fact that I'm pretty sure half the spars are missing/broken. I really want to build and fly this kite. I've written to GuildWorks (who apparently builds big fabric art awnings now) with no reply. I've scoured the internet but I can't find anyone that actually has this early model kite, and while there are some other GuildWorks kite videos out there, each GuildWorks kite seems to be uniquely complicated in construction (in this model there are just as many tangled lines as there are spars) and no one focuses on this model. I'm looking for anyone that can help with any of the following 1) original build instructions 2) assembly video or online resource 3) spar list and dimensions of spars so I can get replacements Thanks for reading,
  18. The original Ninja Eyes set by Bazzer. This is the very first set made, and are the only one of two sets made in the Rev1 sail size. Sails were sewn by Bazzer, but they were finished by Revolution. They are the only kites finished by Revolution that does not have the revolution logo imprinted on them, that I know of. The other kite set is owned by Ben Dantonio, retired general manager of revolution(the last I heard). AS far as I know, these are the kites that started the series of special kites made by master kite makers for Revolution. This set is one vented and one full sail kite, with stacking lines, 120ft laser pro line set, 15 inch snagless handles. The kites are in very good shape, I never flew them in high winds and always took good care of them. No rips, tears, or stains, mesh is in excellent shape. The buyer will be tasked with keeping a bit of Revolution history, they are listed in John Mitchell's list of notable kites in Revolution's past. $2000, including Priority shipping in the US. I will consider offers. I do dicker.

    wet = how heavy?

    Rain, rain go away but leave the breeze for today... So it wasn't the rain that sent me to roll up my lines today, it was the massive roll of thunder that announced the predicted change from grey and gusty to thunderstorms that was the nudge I needed. However, before I gave in I found myself contemplating "if the sail gets wet, it must get heavier. I wonder how much the wind range is impacted by the sail being wet?" Anyone got advice on how many more mph of windspeed is needed to keep a sail up when it goes from dry to wet? Just curious, the wind I get is frequently light enough that I am struggling to stay aloft - making skill building hard. Wondering if staying out in the (non-thunderstorm) showers is worth trying out or if borderline wind + wet wieght= no flight for me. Also, is there a secret "bring on the wind but not the rain/thunder" ritual or dance that I can learn? Don't get me wrong, I ain't complaining - I got a full 10 minutes with my full vent sail the other day before switching back to the standard. Not bad for an inland field round here.

    Skybond Now

    So recently I aquired a set of Shanti Skybond 100'x100# quads. I told myself in the beginning...I would fly both major makers and form my own views on what I liked. So no better time than now! I have flown a full year or so with LPG, different weights and lengths..so time for a change. I have about 50 hours or so on this Skybond set. I have to say that I am liking them. After flying opk with Skybond lines, my interest peaked even more... good timing as I am in need of all lenghts and weights again. My initial thoughts were super slippery. The coating used is great so far. A little color fade...but the set has been in the ocean completely for many hours...I swim and fly or float and fly. .hit sandbars...etc... I hope in the long term...this coating holds up, I dig it. Almost has waterproof properties when wet...sheds water very quick. On the plus side....no clumped up sandy lines when winding up Smaller diameter line compared to Lpg..which equated to less drag and a more direct feeling between me and the kite...almost like running a lighter weight line. I am tickled "yellow" so far and looking for the long term picture as I begin the switch..... I only have 1 gripe with LPG in the end...longevity. I have been wearing out sets at alarming rates...even with regular rotation.up and down..and switching ends. So we will see what transpires from a change this year... What do you fly and why? If you fly Skybond already.... what's your comparison to LPG?
