    Vapor in the dusk

    From the album: Exult's Photos

A very low wind winter session on the nearby golf course. While my wife chose the skies I brought the Vapor. More reading in http://kitelife.com/forum/blogs/entry/302-vapor-in-the-dusk/ .
  4. Sat Feb 17 18:00:00 CET 2018 Golf course, forecasted 1m/s, in reality possibly no wind Vapor on 15m 20kg lines One February afternoon my wife turned hopeful - there was a thin layer of snow - perhaps it would be possible to do some cross country skiing again. Towards the end of the day me and my wife left for the wintry golf course. I wasn't so sure, so I left the skies at home and "only" brought my Prism Vapor. We went by two cars because my wife feared that I for some reason could get stuck while doing kiting (toootally unfair...). When arriving at the parking there were unusually few other cars there - I guess that few had made the same optimistic assumption about the possibility for skiing. She is very enthusiastic about this type of skiing and her whole being kind of shines up during and after skiing. It turned out that the snow layer was just sufficient and I would have gotten more time for the kiting if I would have put the Vapor in a back pack and had gone to the (largest) field by skies - instead I walked, carefully avoiding going near or on the tracks not to annoy the skiers. I have not gotten to know the Vapor properly yet (which is another way of saying that it has been somewhat neglected), so I really handle it with silk gloves. I realized that I should have rehearsed the assembly instructions before the session (especially about the trick line), but I had to hurry up anyhow since it was towards the end of the day. When doing the 360ies I could hardly feel any differences in how much backwards you needed to move for any part of the circle, so this was very close to a no wind situation. Finding the way home - the traditional way. I realize that this blog entry is not so much a report about the kiting, but more in what context the kiting session took place. Most memorable for me is the mood of the nature and session. And frankly it wasn't very much of a session. I felt that I needed to work quite hard for the 360ies. The up and overs had a similar problem. For them it seemed like 15m lines were too long. When pulling downwards when the kite is on its way to the top the hands get too close to the ground. Next time I really should try shorter lines. When the few enthusiastic skiers circulating the field were almost all gone I realized that it really was time to head for home. I guess that this was a situation that I could have gotten acquainted with the map-app of my not yet familiar phone, but I instead opted for moving before it got dark. My wife had already left (she accepts my kiting but is not an enthusiast herself) for her car, while I had continued with the kiting. I was a little concerned because it was getting dark and she is the one that knows the area best. I was quite glad that I had my footprints to follow - the ski tracks went in "all directions" so they were not much of a help. I watched the footprints carefully and didn't let go of them more or less until I saw the silhouette of the car.

The decision was made the evening before (last Thursday) - there had not been so much kiting recently, but there was almost no wind expected for this morning. It was time for the Prism Vapor un-boxing event with the extra bonus of getting a low wind kite that matched the forecast. I was lucky - the kite was OK. I had long put it off because I was not 100% sure that I wasn't going to sell it (allowing me to buy at more modern(?) low wind kite). The only thing I didn't see was an indoor solid carbon rod second top spreader that was mentioned in the instructions. I assembled the kite once in the evening before to practice. The following morning there was a layer of frost on the ground. When coming to the field there were almost constantly someone taking photos of the morning ground fog. The wind, if any, could come from any direction but was maximum about 0.5m/s. I choose the 15m 25kg lines. Compared to my other low wind kites, the Prism 4D and the HQ Shadow, I'd say that this is the one that requires the least effort when doing a 360. When doing an axle with this large light kite, I had to take care to give slack not to prevent it from completing the revolution, even in this almost non-existent wind. In the image the back of the kite is shown - that's why the "spars" appear warped. In the humid environment with melting frost, on the clear panels of the vapor water condensed giving them misty look. The kite got all wet and so did my shoes. The now heavy shoes never dried during the following working day but it was very much worth it. And what about Batman you may ask. Well look carefully under the Kaknäs tower - he is approaching through the mist.

"Flowers?" you may ask - well I didn't get them for this event, they were already around at the time when receiving the shipment. However this is a happy, problematic and almost solemn occasion. I stepped into my time machine (not true) to order a new kite from the past (very true). I ordered an un-opened Prism Vapor kite. The kite was sold as #107 (but I don't know I haven't opened it) and the transparent tube contains a signed paper by Mark Reed and Scobie Puchtler (if the kite itself also carries the signatures I don't know). This is over-kill and I don't want this. I mean I very much appreciate having a Vapor, the look is that of pure beauty, I'm really curious how it is to fly it and have really drooled over it also in the past. It's the most collectors kite that I've ever had and that is the problem. This gets in the way of actually using it! How should I use it? Indoor only? Use it in mud and sand (which is how I use kites because a lost kiting opportunity in itself never comes back)? Hang it in the ceiling as a decoration (which I would do if I unrealistically would have several)? But in the end I don't think that there is another kite with its looks and other properties - the only way that I can see is to try it out. But still I can't get it out of my head, i.e. The Clash's hit "Should I stay or should I go?" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmEMMyvZHcw ), but with the text replaced with the alternative text: "Should I fly or should I trade?", again, again and again... I didn't order any of the Aliens (already got one and used it last Sunday (along with the Elixir) b.t.w.) or the Radians. The Radians (also from a time when the form of a dual stunt kite was less well standardized - compare this to early bicycles or or car models) really look non-standard and most likely feels different to fly from any other kite that I flown. I even still remember them from the catalogue I saw by the end of the nineties. I'm curious, but sometimes you need to chose not to yield to temptation.
