K2unit
If I weigh 180 lbs why use 250 lb. Line? If I’m reel flying single line, In theory wouldn’t the kite lift you off the ground before breaking? I understand safety margins! Thanx K2
John Barresi
Elasticity, the inertia created during stretch can "head toward" the break point. Actual weight of the line itself, collectively, really long lengths hang from the kite, never mind whatever moisture is picked up, etc. Gusts, or yanks by hand can add more pull than "body weight vs kite". Also, just the ease of handling a larger line in hand. Just some thoughts, incomplete and open to debate.
TaeWFO
I'm no expert on the topic but I believe that different knots in your line will result in different reductions in strength: http://www.deltakites.com/knots.html#strength
John Barresi
Also true, to various extents depending on line material as well. Spectra for example, tends to cut or melt itself more easily (strong tensile but low melting point).
