Our one our members (Reef Runner / Nick) has been unable to create new posts or reply for the past week or so, and the reply box (into which I'm typing now) won't even load for him on some pages.

We've proven this out on FIVE of his computers, experimenting with security, javascript, cache, cookies, etc, all to no avail... So, I'm asking you to help troubleshoot a little for me simply by letting me know what you're using to browse this forum and if you're having any problems.

If you ARE having problems and cannot reply, please send me an email by clicking here.

Nick and I both thank you in advance, I'd really like to get him up and running with us again. ;)

I'm using XP and Chrome! Got stuck in one topic, couldn't navigate anywhere else, even to log off! One subject had this tiny answer box drop down, no emoticons, couldn't edit! At times I get this outline type nav site before going to the forum, but this time it was a direct route! So some issues are not just IE8 only!! If I find any other issues, I'll let you know!!

I deliberately messed up some things to see if I could edit my message - OK for now!!

I always hate to put someone in that position, but it would be a good idea anyway...

November 15th, looks like all Google Apps will no longer work on IE8.

Thanks for the updates all. :)

The main page login form should be gone as of 4-5 days ago, should just be the login link on the menu bar which takes you to the forum... All logins should be made through the forum, but are supposed to carry over automatically (keep you logged in) to the main site as well.

Chrome on Mac with no problems noted here. Also a quick check of Firefox and Opera on Mac and IE9 on Win7 showed no problems for a quick login and test reply to a random thread (and canceled when the reply box popped up).

THIS POST WAS EDITED, VIA FIREFOX, TODAY, OCTOBER 18, 2012.............(SEE BELOW) :confused!:

:doh:NOTE; FOR SOME REASON, THE iPad NOW WORKS (today, anyway), SO, IN ALL FAIRNESS, THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM THAT I REPORTED, COULD HAVE BEEN AN OPERATOR (me) PROBLEM. I DON'T KNOW THAT FOR SURE, BUT I DO KNOW THAT I COULD NOT LOG-IN, BACK WHEN I ORIGINALLY REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO JOHN. TODAY, I WAS ABLE TO LOG IN, UNDER THE FORUM DROP DOWN BOX, ON THE KITELIFE MAIN PAGE, AND MADE A FEEBLE ATTEMPT TO POST SOMETHING? ONLY PROBLEM, THE iPad IS MY WIFE'S UNIT (thank goodness), SO I WON'T BE STRUGGLING WITH THAT ANY MORE.............

Ok, just to help clear this thing up, it's not that I can't post or reply on Kitelife, at all. It's just that I can't do it, using my browser of choice, which at this moment, and for many years, has been Internet Explorer (I'm posting this now, using Firefox)

But back to the problem at hand. Currently, I am using Windows XP Pro, with IE8 as my browser, and unfortunately, I can't upgrade to IE9, with Windows XP. The kicker, I've also got a Dell, that is running Windows Vista, and that computer is already using IE9 as a browser. Well, same results on both, I can not start a topic, or reply, or do anything that requires me to enter text. I don't get a text box, as I once did, only a blank white space, with no cursor, and no input capability, at all. I just thought this to be quite strange. And on top of that, about 3 - 4 weeks ago, my wife got a brand new Apple iPad (newest edition), and when she brought it home, I just had to play with it. One of the very first websites I went to, after I finally figured out how, was Kitelife.com. I pulled up the website, I signed in, and everything was fine. But now, that likewise is causing problems. At least I can sign on with my XP and IE8 & IE9, even though I can't do anything, but now, with the iPad, I can't even sign on. So this in getting very strange.

All in all, I'm experiencing problems on the following:

Lenovo laptop #1 - Windows XP Pro - IE8 (website looks ok and I can navigate, but no text box for any kind of input)

Lenovo laptop #2 - Windows XP Pro - IE8 (website looks ok and I can navigate, but no text box for any kind of input)

HP desktop - Windows XP Pro - IE8 (website looks ok and I can navigate, but no text box for any kind of input)

Dell laptop #3- Windows Vista - IE9 (website looks ok and I can navigate, but no text box for any kind of input)

Apple iPad (newest edition) - iOS - Safari (Website loads, but none of the links across the top of the page, such as Home, Magazine, Video, Forum, Info, & Login, work, or do anything. Drop boxes all drop down, but nothing in them works. I can't get to the forum to login, and the login link, in the forum drop down box, likewise doesn't work. Oh, the lower links on the page appear to work - the one's that show up under Editor Picks. I haven't gone any farther.)

So, needless to say, I am feeling like something very strange is going on, with the Kitelife website. I just want to be able to get back on, without having to switch browsers, just for one website. I have no problems and no issues with anything else, and John has pulled out a lot of hair, I'm sure, trying to help me, so if anyone else has any suggestions, please feel free to chime in. Thanks to all of you, who have already done so. All input helps us, as we try to erradicate this ghost, that has recently jumped on all of my computers...........

thanks.........reef runner :ani_wallbash:

Hey RR...

Are all these computers accessing the internet through the same gateway ? Did your internet service change recently ? I had trouble a few months ago using IE, but a switch to Chrome took most of the quirks out of the site. I have to use IE for business & connecting to secure corporate sites, and was very resistant to having to use multiple browsers. It's just the way of it, though. I have some corporate sites that don't work in IE on some machines, but work fine with Firefox. Some sites are designed on and intended to be viewed on a Mac.

There's a good possibility that a Microsoft security update caused your machines to not view the site properly, also. If you haven't all ready, try adding kitelife to your 'trusted sites' list, and drop the security level for your trusted sites all the way down. Good luck, but my final resolution was to just give in and switch my 'personal browsing' to another browser, and keep IE for business sites.

I had the same question as Rob. To get a problem with so many combinations, I would be looking for something they all have in common. I can only think of a few things:

#1 - your ISP. Could they be blocking some needed function as (to their mind) risky?

#2 - your router/WiFi/modem - could there be some setting in there that is blocking something similar?

#3 - you. Have you offended the kite gods or the network gods in some way? Maybe you need to offer up an offering of some sort. (Maybe send me a few kites? Or that new iPad - I haven't got one of those yet. I will try to forward them to the appropriate gods - or at least fly them in their honor.) :cat_lol:

===edit===

Oh, and I think Windows 7 (and soon 8) needs to be added to the OS choices.

Ok, ok, no kites Pete, and Rob, yes, I am posting now, using Firefox. As you mentioned, I too am reluctant to use multiple browsers, but looks like I'm being forced to do so, if I want to post. A little bothersome, but it works. As for your question, and Pete's, concerning my ISP, nothing has changed there in 10+ years. I've been with Time Warner Cable (road runner), as long as I can remember, so I suppose it's way more than 10 years. So far as other settings (router, WiFi, modem), nothing has changed there either. So, as it stands, John is working on the problem now, and hopefully he will be able to figure out what is going on. We are currently doing some trial runs with the forum service, and that seems to be working, so there appears to be a glitch, somewhere between that service, and the way it is coming out on Kitelife. I know that sounds stupid, but I'm not a computer geek, so I don't know the correct terminology, and I surely don't mean to put words in John's mouth, so I'll wait to hear the "real" verdict, from him. In the meantime, I suppose I'll use Firefox...........

Thanks guys, for the suggestions and help...........(nice try on the kite deal, Pete) NOT

Just for the record, my ISP (Comcast) and probably most others, change things all the time. About the only time you hear about it is if they advertise "New Speed!!!" or "New Security!!!" and they never really specify what the details were that made them "new".

Also automatic upgrades and fixes of browsers and OSs can change things frequently "for your own good". They don't explain much about those, either. (This does seem less likely in your case since it affected so many platform/browser combinations simultaneously. Although, it seems to be all Windows except the iPad, and you likely never tried the iPad before you had the problem. It is possible that the iPad never worked, and you just discovered that AFTER you had the main problem.)

(I had to try for the kites; it was just too easy.) :cat_lol:

Back to FireFox !

Yep, ain't it nice when they look out for you like that............I do automatic updates, well, automatically. Try to keep everything as up to date, as possible, but still, this is strange........

Oh, and yes, I did try the iPad, back 3-4 weeks ago, and logged on just fine. Problem there is that I can't even log in, so I don't know about the other issues, that I am confronted with, on the Windows systems........... :ani_wallbash:

Okay, made one server tweak today (due to another issue)...

Long shot - just out of curiosity, is the problem resolved?

Back to FireFox :cat:

John, sorry to say this, but no  , the tweak didn't get it.

Just to update, I checked back over on the web "testing site", and things there are still working just fine with Windows XP Pro. Something has got to be different, somewhere, between that site and Kitelife, but I guess that is obvious, sorry :sq-sad:

Also, just to make sure that I'm not passing on bad info, I have also gone back (2 minutes ago), and tried the Dell computer, which is running Windows VISTA and IE9. Still getting the same results.........it takes me to, "where the text box should be", my avatar is up in the top left corner, as it should be, but, there is no text box, cursor, or any kind of user control..........

It's just a big blank area ? :g:

Sorry for the inconvenience Nick, I'm not sure what else to try on this end...

Invision (forum) tech support hit it right on for me:

it's a little tough to troubleshoot his issue when we can't duplicate it

No fault to you, but without being able to put our hands on the issue ourselves, we're more confused than you are. :g:

Don't use IE except for when I'm forced to by Microsoft. Tried Chrome, but it keeps wanting too much control ... seems like it keeps making changes that I have to correct. Switched over to Firefox and have never looked back. Been on this forum for about four years ... three with Firefox. The only problem I have is jumping computers. Grab the trip computer and I have to sign in every time. Once in awhile it'll also make me sign in when we move to a new hotel.

I use XP (three computers), Vista (1 computer) and Windows 7 (2 computers) ... three laptops and three desktops.

Cheers,

Tom

POSTED WITH THE iPad ?

Well, for some reason, I am now posting this with my wife's iPad, if you can call this posting. Can't believe that people like this. Call me old fashioned, but I'll take a regular old computer any day - what a painful experience - but it's working, so scratch the iPad off the list of problems........ It's got enough of it's own!!!!

OK, Back to FireFox :ani_idea:

Ok, after the previous post (with the iPad), I went back and edited my original post, concerning that machine, since it seems to be working today? Just so you won't have to look back (not that anyone would care), but here is my edit, in it's entirety.

Nick - I'm using Chrome on my Windows XP equipped system and it is ancient by today's standards!! I started using it over FF because I could get videos a bit faster!! Might try it on 1 machine to have something to compare it to? Just a thought!

Yes Wayne, I know that I can use either Chrome or FireFox. I'm posting now using FireFox, but the real question is why did it all of a sudden quit working with Windows XP & IE8, as well as Windows Vista & IE 9. That's what we are trying to figure out. John put me on a test site, that has a "generic" forum, exactly like the Kitelife forum, and I suppose they are the ones that are actually handling this forum. Anyway, when I got there (to the test site), everything worked perfectly. I can post, I can quote, I can reply, I can do everything, that I once could do here. But when I come back here (to Kitelife), I still can't post, or reply, or anything. I can't even reply to a PM. I can send them, but I can't reply back. Anything that requires me to enter text, into a text box, I can't do. I don't even have a cursor........so obviously, something is messed up somewhere, especially if everything works over at the test site, with the other forum.

Yes, I can use either of those other browsers, but I'm just used to Internet Explorer, and I don't particularly like having to switch back and forth, just for one website..........It's more of an inconvenience than anything else.

I do appreciate your suggestion, though, but I'm already doing what you suggested, but not by choice ! :ani_victory:

Unless there was a backround change to Kitelife, it is almost certainly Windows updates that did this to you, Nick. It is what it is... you want your security updates, that's certainly not a bad thing. I make my living figuring stuff like this out for my customers. Sometimes it's the firewall, sometimes it's the network, and sometimes it's the workstation. Every day, it's a puzzle.

Splitting my personal web activity onto another browser was easy to get used to. I do my work on IE, and the rest on Chrome. Shrug my shoulders & move on... 8)
