A couple beginner questions

There are indoor gliders available for about $30.00 on up! Look at ITW's (Into The Wind) catalog. They carry iFlites in 3 varieties ranging from $38.00 to $65.00! They also carry the Skate at $139.00. I personally own 2 iFlite classics and an iFlite II, and find them highly enjoyable! You can see pix of them here on KL in the 30 days of May gliding thread!

Gliders are usually designed with the intent to be flown in zero-wind to very light (1mph?) conditions. Any kite flown in zero-wind or indoors requires the person flying it to generate air (wind) resistance against the sail fabric to create lift. This involves moving at least your arms with sufficient force to create that lift.

On the other hand, you can remain stationary and let the wind do the work. I very often sit on the ground and fly my Revs with no problem. You can do this with some gliders, depending on size and style and wind conditions. Generally, the smaller the sail area and wind force, the more movement is necessary, depending on some other variables like weight versus sail area, line weight and length.

In addition, you can use a long lightweight rod, like a fishing rod to amplify your inputs and movements with gliders if the sail area is small enough so as not to take a leverage advantage over the flyer if you get some wind. Trying these methods is the only way that you will find what the limitations are in relation to how much of a workout your body can handle without excess fatigue.

The wind is your friend. Only with power kites, or the wrong kite for existing wind conditions will you find yourself having to fight the wind. Even with limited physical ability, you should be able to partake in the performance you choreograph. You only need knowledge, experience and the correct kite for the conditions in which you intend to fly.

P.S. -- It ain't rocket science. It's much more complicated than that! (JUST KIDDING) However, flying kites is much more addictive than love.
