Difference in Wolf NG, Magnum and Widow NG

Hi there. First post here, so why not start with the classic "what should I buy?"

Don't cary about all the junk I tend to write? just skip to the bold text.

I'm looking for a new kite since me and my girlfriend recently bought one HQ quickstep II to share. We fell in love with the sport pretty quick and we'll buy one new kite fairly soon (it's getting tiring having to wait for your turn). Just not sure about which one.

We don't have that much money as two students with weekend jobs, so we initially said that the price limit was 150USD, excluding shipping. (I've come to understand most of you are americans, correct me if I'm wrong.) And yes, we'll buy online, you don't really have that much to choose from around here.

We've heard a lot of good things about the Premier Widow NG, sure; it's a little bit more than 150 USD, but if it really is that good...

We haven't however heard that much about its cheaper sibling Wolf NG, which is even below our budget. It's smaller and I understand that makes it faster(?), is there anything else?

And we've pretty much heard nothing about the magnum.

We are, as of now, leaning towards the Wolf NG mostly because of the price, but we wanted to hear some input about it first. If the widow is much better than the wolf we'll manage to find the extra cash.

In fewer words; which kite should we buy, and why?. The Wolf NG, magnum or Widow NG (or another one)?

About us:

  • It shouldn't cost more than 150 USD, excluding shipping. We are however willing to add a little more if it makes a relatively big difference.
  • We are beginners. We have a few hours flying time each, but we can't really do that much with the kite (some basic landings, stalls etc).
  • We live in a fairly windy area. >20 mp/h happens every now and then, but we wouldn't cry if the kite only can operate in <20 mph (the Wolf operates in 4-25 mph compared to the widows 4-20 mph)
  • We rarely slam the kite nose down in the ground in high speed anymore (amazing how much abuse the quickstep can handle). But we would feel a lot more comfortable if we knew the kite could at least take some abuse.
  • My girlfriend mostly like to fly around "for fun" and doing a few tricks. Me on the other hand will probably focus on doing tricks.
  • We have, as of now, no interest in flying in pairs.
  • We have looked at second hand kites, practically none existent here in southern Sweden, so not an option.

Sweden has info the best kite makers around in Jörgen from Sport Kite Design.

My suggestion is get in touch with him and explain what your after. Yes his stuff is high end BUT he used to offer a trade in scheme and may still have some second hand kites. A top end kite even second hand is worth the money. Or even ask is he has some prototypes for sale.

If it is possible to meet up with some other flyers and fly their kites, that would give you a better feel for the ones you click with.

Haven't flown any of the suggestions but I'd go for the Widow as I think it looks the best of the bunch...

Not exactly the answer to your question but as you live in Europe and already have a HQ kite take a look at the HQ Maestro 2 - in your price range. big kite so not too fast, good for just flying around but also tricks really well - also shipping may well be much cheaper. I have one and really enjoy it.

Hey, I'm not a big dual line "trickster" ! I'm basically into "just flying around", and having a good time. I usually fly on the beach, or on the dunes, and I usually fly quad line kites (Revolution), but when I fly dual line kites, it's usually my Premier Magnum. It is one of my favorite cruising kites (in fact, I have two). It's not a tremendously high end kite, it's relatively inexpensive, it's easy to fly and oh oh so graceful, so if you are just beginning, and you just want a good solid kite to fly, and have fun with, you can't go wrong with the Premier Magnum.
