Marty Sasaki
1954 – 2009
With a most saddened heart I am sorry to have to tell you that our dear friend, Marty Sasaki, passed away, in hospital, last Saturday morning of sepsis.
Marty’s body will be cremated sometime this week. Marty’s long-time and dearest partner, Joanne Klys (rhymes with “eyes”), is responsible for all arrangements. She is planning to have a memorial service for friends and family in Arlington, MA, sometime later. Marty also leaves his immediate family — mother, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew — in California.
Joanne is responsible for dealing with a monumental number of decisions which have been compounded by Marty’s sudden passing. She has created this email address through which we can communicate our condolences: “ document.write(”); document.write(‘marty_nirvana@verizon.net’); ”. She is also planning to have a memorial web site for Marty on line in the next few weeks and will disseminate that information as soon as the site is up.
I have included (below) the obituary which Joanne will send to the Boston Globe for publishing on Sunday the 30th.
Deceased, September 19 – Marty Shigeo Sasaki, 55, of Arlington, after a brief illness. Son of Kumiko Sasaki of Hawthorne, California and of the late Kenneth Sasaki; brother to Gwen Brockman of California; uncle of Clay Brockman and the late Amanda Brockman; and special friend of Joanne Klys of Arlington. Marty was born in Hawaii, spent his childhood in California, and lived his adult life in the Boston area. He was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and followed a career in software engineering. Master Woodworker, Champion Archer, Musician, Kite Builder, Model Plane Builder, Writer, Photographer, Fisherman, Amateur Magician, Science Guru. Mentor and Treasured Friend. Marty pursued the simple things in life and encouraged all those around him to have fun. He touched so many. And everything he did was magic.

Erv Crosby
1938 – 2009
Longtime supporters of the northwest kite community and owners of Four Winds Kite Shop, Erv and his wife Gail were frequent attendees at NW events and others for many years, often with dual line kites of Erv’s own manufacture, often cooperatively designed with various fliers in his area… Most recently, I enjoyed time with him at a small kite event he helped organize in conjunction with the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival held in Mount Vernon, Washington
Not more than 2-3 weeks prior to his passing, I received a NOX dual line kite in the mail from Erv complete with the distinctive Prismatex mylar he was fond of using… Thank you kindly sir, I’ll fly it with appreciation.

Long time KTAI member, and good friend to many of us, Erv Crosby of Four Winds Kite Shop in Everett, WA has passed away.
Gail and Erv Crosby have been loyal KTAI members since 1992, with Gail serving on the KTAI Board of Directors for several years; and Erv always a positive, active force in his own retail endeavor; and in helping others. I think many KTAI Exhibitors can attest to the help Erv has given them over the years at Trade Show; always eager to help with set up and tear down; and to disassemble and pack endless stacks of kites.
Gail and Erv are the embodiment of what you want in an association member. They are honest, forward thinking, can-do people. They quickly reached out to others to share their kiting experiences, and reveled in the enjoyment of kiting and the people in the business.
KTAI will miss Erv, and our thoughts are with Gail and their family. In addition, Erv was a personal friend of mine; a smiling face you always looked for whenever you were at a kite event – I will miss him.

Obituary
Ervin L. Crosby, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home in Everett, September 29, 2009 after bravely battling cancer. He was born on June 29, 1938 in Seattle, WA, the son of Pearl and Ervin Crosby.
Erv is survived by his wife and true love of 50 years, Gail; four daughters, Shelley (Dick), Tracey, Laurie, Laura; granchildren, Amanda, Brad, Sarah, Jon and the M’s; brothers, Gary (Lisa), Gil (Val); and loved puppy mill dog, “George”.
Erv served in the United States Navy beginning with submarine schooling June 1956. He actively served on the USS Wahoo 565. He worked in the elevator trade for 35 years before retiring in 1995. He and his wife purchased Four Winds Kite Store in 1992, located in Everett. This allowed them to meet many wonderful people over the last 17 years.
Throughout his life Erv enjoyed a multitude of projects which included: building a two man submarine, a motor home, restoring a green school bus, building kites, and eventually RC boats. Indian carving remained a passion throughout his life.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 10 at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church, 4513 84th St SW, Mukilteo. Reception at church will follow.
