  1. Hi all, Looking to replace to some line sets and wanted to get opinions and experience usage on Laser Pro Gold vs Shanti Speedline. Preferences, differences, opinions. Thx.
  2. In usage, it does take a little more time winding and unwinding than a typical card type winder as you can't just 'rock' the line off. For me it just avoids the frustration of the odd time you do actually get things tangled up, the extra time trade off is worth it to me, but to each their own.
  3. I can't really comment on UL or SUL quads, I just have standard models. I recently got a Freilein Windrider 4 and flew it today. The quality seems to be good, tucked T connections on leading edge, end shock cords are also knotted to inside leading, pocketed knots on bottom, so everything is snag free. The bridle seems to be what may be called an 'active' bridle and also has an extra line from bottom to center which is to help in flic flacs so bridle doesn't catch on the 'feet' manufacturer says. Here is a shot from first flight.
  4. Thanks for the links...I don't have any issue with line tangles/management as I've watched both line management tutorials from John and Joe and that's what I'm using here, it's a bit of a hybrid between the two I guess where Joe mentioned he liked to keep a finger between the line sets as he winds. I saw that an thought, well if you're keeping the line set separated between your fingers why not modify the winder to keep them separate as well and see how that works out in the field. Just experimentation really and will see how I like both methods/winders in usage.
  5. No offense taken. I have watched most of John's great tutorials and also wind lines all together. Just trying something different to see if I like it. They are not really wound separately, they are simply kept separated by right/left line set, upper and lower are knotted together. I just keep a finger in between each line set as I wind.
  6. Just thought I would share a pic of the winder I made for my lines, just keeps separated.
  7. I put some 3mm metal grommets...problem solved...I had to file down the length of the grommet tube that passes through, so it would just crimp over top of the metal washer on the other side and not crimp past onto the fabric.
  8. has anyone tried small metal grommets before? I ordered some small 3mm ones to try out. Can't really do heat shrink right at the ends where the knots are, you kind of need that end flexible...hopefully small grommets will do the trick...broke two more cords.
  9. I have some straps like this...it has a small loop at the top as well...I'm assuming if you just want to loop one finger in there. Is there a typical way you would hold the long part of the strap if you have your finger through the small loop?
  10. It looks like they are stitched so that they don't slide and cinch on your wrist, that wouldn't be comfortable.
  11. I recently came across these straps and thought it was interesting usage, makes sense to me anyways...I find I usually need to use the straps around my wrists because of the pull, but odd time will have it slip off around my wrist/thumb. Will try the finger grip methods and see how that feels.
  12. The lines are over 5 years old, spectra 90lb, came with the prism zephyr. I've never checked them before and just started getting more serious about improving my skills and learning to do the basic tricks. I have a blunt type needle as well, but those knots where so tight, no way i could even force it behind.
  13. got it done...had to use some pliers to get those knots apart.
  14. I'm assuming just undo the knots on the leader and pull the line through the sleeves that same amount and try and tie it off to the same measurements again...or is there a better way?
  15. Tutorials or advice on how to equalize my lines? Picture attached, one line is about 4.5 inches longer than the other. What's the easiest way to equalize? Thanks
  16. okay...200lb a little bit overkill, but won't hurt i guess other than the extra weight and drag. will probably pick up a 100 or 120lb roll of line too, so i may use that on it instead and the 200lb if I get anything bigger. Will try it on the 200 first and see. and yah i'll probably chop it into a 300' and 200' spool...500' seems like a lot and don't think i'll ever be flying anything that high. It barely fits on the reel I have for it.
  17. Guess I can just count how many times I wind the reel and multiply the circumference.
  18. Hi, I just got one of these 8m soft octopus kites. Just wondering how do you gauge what line weight to use? I bought some 200lb dacron line 500ft. The other reels I have only have 40lb line on it and I didn't think that would be strong enough for this one? I think it recommended 150lb in a listing but not sure how accurate those listings are. Thinking spooling 500ft on my reel is a bit much as well...anyone ever kept track how high you actually fly your single lines? Might split it off into a 300 and 200 reel. Thoughts? suggestions?
  19. Wondering if anyone has tried just separating lines into left/right side for some dual line control? Soft 8m Octopus kite as an example. Saw this kite (image attached) and got to thinking if anyone has tried?
  20. my expectation is that if this frayed already a few flights in then its only a few more flights away before the elastic cord itself breaks...
  21. yah i think heat shrink tubing may do the trick, will probably try that...i don't think its heat shrink that is used on the cap end cords...feels like soft plastic tubing of some sort...
  22. Ah...just realized I should have probably posted this in quad head section. Moderator, can you move there easily? Not sure how to ping mod in a thread....
  23. Yes there is some tension on it. The fraying is occurring on the edge of the material hole. It seems like it is cut using heat so the edges of those hole feel quite hard/sharp, but not sure a good work around...if there was small thin rubber grommets? ideas? These cords have a plastic sheathing on them where they enter/exit the cap holes so that's great, it doesn't fray there. I have another freiline quad that doesn't have that on it and the cords frayed/broke there. I ended up filing/rounding over the edges of the caps to prevent in future on that kite.
  24. Hi, New to the forum and looking for some suggestions. I have a Freilein Windrider II quad line kite. I've only had it up a few times now and noticed the cords are fraying right where the holes are. I'm assuming from the hard edge of the hole being cut/melted there. Any suggestions on how to remedy it? thx
