linekahuna
What type of line winders do you use for single line kites? Below is a photo of the ones I make. Very difficult to drill holes exactly in a line. Haven't been able to come up with a jig that drills holes straight. Anyone have a suggestion? Heard brad bit drills may work. Very simple to make. Uses wooden dowels, solid fiberglass rods, hollow fiberglass rod, vinyl tubing and an end cap. If you would like measurements, just ask. windofchange
Do you have a dowel jig? If so, clamp both pieces together and drill one hole through them both with the dowel jig so that the holes are centered on the two long dowels. Then bolt them both together on top of another board (2x4) with a temp bolt, clamp it on a table (or drill press) and use the dowel jig to drill the rest of the holes. That way all holes are lined up perfectly. Rockler dowel jig - online for appx. $11.
Jeepster
Very difficult to drill holes exactly in a line.Haven't been able to come up with a jig that drills holes straight. Anyone have a suggestion? Kent's idea with a dowel jig is a sound method. Even there, brad bits are worth the expense when drilling in round stuff ... the point locks the bit in position and reduces wandering. If you're to0 cheap economical to buy the dowel jig, then I would suggest a vee block. It can be cut in a 2x4 with a table saw. Put the bit in your drill press and lower it down into the bottom of the "v" ... then clamp the vee block in that position. Carefully mark both a centerline and a distance line on your dowels and drill away. I used this process to drill centered holes in PVC and it worked well ... again the brad bit was the determining factor. Cheers, Tom
