Beech Mtn. NC Kite Festival?

I am considering driving down to Beech Mtn. NC for two days of flying. The event is listed on the AKA website so I assuming it will be worth the drive. My question are:

Has anyone ever attended this festival or have plans to attend this year?

Does anyone know anywhere good to stay North of Beech Mtn that is safe and reasonable

I would love to make it to the beech mtn. festival (being i've never been to ANY kite festival) but alas, I cannot because of time and budget constraints. I will not be able to make the six hour drive there unfortunately!
