Dan Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Trying to improve my control of my kite when in a stall. Are there any rules like "pull on the line of the wing that is dropping" or such? Currently, I've been trying to control the kite in a stall like I control it normally. So, if the wind is dropping, I pull on the other wing or give more slack to the dropping wing, but I have a feeling this isn't the right way to go. Thanks, Dan Quote
Dorsal Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Maybe this video will give you some help. http://www.prismkites.com/prism2006/videos...e/sideSlide.mpg Quote
Dan Posted September 9, 2006 Author Report Posted September 9, 2006 Thanks, Dorsal. I watched the video and then went and pulled out my Prism DVD. They keep saying tend the tension in your lines, but they never say what the correction is to pull a wing back up that is dropping. Do you pull on that wing or the opposite wing. In normal flight, you'd pull on the opposite wing to turn the kite causing the dropping wing to come back up. Is it the same in stalled flight? ~Dan Quote
Dorsal Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 If I remember correctly (because I don't really think about what I'm doing when I fly) when I'm trying to hold a kite in a single position in a stall, I will pull slightly on the wing that is beginning to droop. When flying in a stalled condition, the sail has barely enough wind to keep it afloat. So one side will start to drop when it loses that fine balance. Of course if the wind is high enough to keep trying to force the kite to fly away, then the magic is to dump the wind out of the inflated side, so I'd let that side out. I seem to remember one of those flight CD's, talking about doing side slides, saying to lock your trailing hand in place, and tend the attitude of the kite with the leading hand. So, when sliding right to left, the leading hand is the left hand - - and when sliding left to right, the leading hand is your right hand. That's about the best I can do - I'm terrible about describing HOW to perform any trick. Quote
normofthenorth Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 I'm following this thread because I'm no good at either of these, and I want to know the answer! Dorsal's answer about the dropping wing SOUNDS right to me, but I think it's the opposite of the (hot-shot) answer that this question just got on the gwtw forum, so I'm still scratching my head. (I should be out flying instead!) But D's answer about the side-slide is reversed from my recollection of Prism's instructions on the side-slide. I'm pretty sure Mark recommends holding the LEADING hand steady, and tending by adjusting the TRAILING hand. Again, definitely DON'T do as I DO, and think carefully before even doing what I SAY! Dorsal Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 Y'know Norm, you may be exactly right - Like I said, I don't really "think" while I'm flying, except to miss the pedestrians. Quote
