intrance
Hi guys.. This is my first post eventho im a member since 2008. I own a few powerkites and 1 stunt kite - Prism Quantum. Now im downed due to knee fractured after mishap when jumping in gusty condition with my 6m powerkite. So i think i should mellow down abit and fly my quantum after im ok. Quantum is quite heavy and need a good wind to fly. My field's condition is gusty with low wind ard 3mph, so im wondering, if there anything i can do to make the quantum fly better in low wind. Many thanks in advance.
JoneZ
I also have a Quantum. I named her Bertha of Girth. lol They are heavy machines, and asides from re-framing it, and getting a set of 50# 50ft. lines, theres nothing really else that will help. You could reframe it to skyshark P200s and get the weight down substantially, but the wind range would be reduced to about 3-18Mph (educated guess). Hope that helps m8. Good luck! Guru4tru
Hi "intrance", Sorry to hear about your knee. But, getting it from "Powerkiting" is like a badge of courage, in my book, like a combat wonded veteran! Being over 60 I don't dare to try that, but I know I would have love it when I was younger had I known about it then. You've been a member about a year longer then I...so welcome me aboard!! My wife, son and myself all own a Quantum...we're a 3 Quantum family. The Quantum was the first kite I started flying with, but it is really frustrating in low wind. And Jonez sort of summed it up. The problem with going to a lighter frame though, is that as soon as the wind kicks up you'd have to swap out the entire frame to continue to fly. Unfortunately, there isn't any one kite that can do everything. So, welcome to the "Ever Increasing Number Of Kites In Our Bag Club! (That's EINOKIOBC for short!) I couldn't just sit around waiting for a little more wind, or be in the field when the wind dies down and just stand there waiting for a gust once in awhile; so I bought an Ultra-Light. At that time, before I retired, I had a little more money then I do now, so I bought a Nirvana UL...and she is fantastic...but very expensive. But, if you're thinking about or decide to get an UL, you might post a question as to what is the best way to go. I don't know much about the other ULs out there or how much they cost but, I'm sure there is a lot of experience here on that subject! Keep It Up! Guru4tru
Oh Yeah...You might think about getting a Rev. They've come out with one called ZEN, that will fly in little and no wind...so I hear! Keep It Up! Duane
intrance
Thx JoneZ n Duane for the advice.. Duane, Im 43 now and I fly powerkite for 3-4 yrs now. At that time, I want to try something diff for my hobby. My wife said these power kites are not for my age. hahaha When I bought the Quantum 2yrs back I thought I want to learn trick with it, but unfortunately, whenever im on the field, powerkite is the one Im flying. I think I flew my Quantum for not more than 5 times.. I feel no enjoyment flying it, maybe due to the low wind. Not to mention, I think I covered more than 2-3 miles of 'walk of shame' Wind in Singapore generally never hit 13mph throughout the year. Inland will be lower. So can I say, I will be better of with UL kite? Yes, Im looking for REV UL too
Guru4tru
When I'm flying dual strings most of my flight time is with my UL. If I didn't have an UL I'd be spending a lot of my time just looking out the window instead of flying. But, since I got my Rev. at Christmas, the dualies have been somewhat neglected in my life. After I get to where I feel pretty comfortable in my ability to fly the Rev., then I'll be mixing up my flying times between the two a lot more! Keep It Up!
