codykiteguy
I was going to say something but I think Windofchange pretty well covered it all for me
John Barresi
I hope I don't step on any Kite Life toes here but I have been away from active kite flying for a few years, can anyone tell me what happened to Kite Lines and American Kite mags. Is Dan Prentice and Val Govig still around? Going back to the beginning of this thread with up to date information... Daniel Prentice is alive and well, but clearly unexcited about kiting and without motivation to work with me on republishing AKM to the web. Val Govig is alive and well, while Kitelines is no longer in print... She is willing to work with me on republishing Kitelines to the web, just as we've done with SKQ. So, be excited... Be very excited! We can look to have the first issues of Kitelines on this site in PDF format sometime early next year if all goes well. (Shhh... It's a secret!)
John Barresi
Daniel Prentice is alive and well, but clearly unexcited about kiting and without motivation to work with me on republishing AKM to the web. Let me update this once again... I got the chance to speak with Daniel at the KTAI trade show a couple weeks ago, and when the time comes I just might gather up a petition of sorts from everyone I know who would like to see American Kite Magazine on line as we're doing with SKQ and Kite Lines. Mr. Prentice did not say no... He indicated that he'd have to see a public desire for it, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Converting Kite Lines will keep us busy for all of 2005... We'll keep you posted.
Joe Faust
I love questions, so don't hesitate to ask any! Hi John, In 1980 , plus or minus a year, Valerie Govig accepted my two large boxes of my kite notes; to make things official, she and I agreed that she would give me a $1 check. I cashed the check and firmed that she would for AKA have rights over the archival notes that I had formed from about 1965 through 1970 or so when my notes turned to free-flight manned kiting (hang gliding). The question is this, are my notes still in someone's keep, or are they lost forever? Thank you for your Kitelife works! Lift, Joe ...now curating at the online effort HangGliderHistory where kite matters are involved in key ways.. Photo attached is of Francis M. Rogallo as he was demonstrating how the Rogallo wing would be used for hang gliding payloads or pilots or both in a free-flight kiting mode where the payload forms the foundation for the tug through the multiple kite-bridling tethers. When the anchor is freely falling through air and a net gliding event occurs, then the kite system shown is an object in the subset of kites that is a hang gliding system (yet a kind of kite). Joe Faust
Has anyone so used kites ...for holding high jump barriers, hurdle barriers....for exercising, playing?
John Barresi
I hadn't heard anything about Prentice dying, or Prentice anything for that matter... He stepped out of the kiting scene sometime in 1997 or 1998, at least that's when AKM went down for the count. I'm pleased to say that Daniel Prentice is still around and doing quite well... I was sponsored by Shanti in the early and late 90s, but hadn't seen them in the "limelight" during most of the 2000s. However, I wasn't exactly in the retail market and had no idea that he's been continually providing Shanti products to stores around the country throughout, without hiatus... Speedline and his other products have been on shelves without fail, from what I understand. In 2005, he appeared at the KTAI show in Primm, first time I'd seen him personally since the old days... It was great to see him back! Since then, he's been at KTAI at least a couple more times, and he even had a Shanti booth at the trade show in Vegas this year! He's got a new kind of kite line called Skybond (old name - new product) which has gained interest from a number of folks who have tried it. I've had a number of great phone calls with him over the past year, he's passionate as ever about his products and I'm looking forward to seeing what he brings onto the scene in years to come. Jeepster
John Chilese posted a picture of Dan in his photo album from KTAI. A couple of years ago I called Shanti to ask some questions about their product line. I was surprised when Dan answered the phone ... usually the "CEO" doesn't answer phones. After answering my questions, he carefully talking me into trying some of his Shanti line. I had never met the man nor seen a picture of him. His enthusiasm for his product and kiting was so strong that I hung up thinking I'd talked to a 30 year old guy. Imagine my surprise when John posted the above picture. Folks who are as enthusiastic and as helpful as Dan are a great credit to kiting. Cheers, Tom
