spiff
Hello All I was watching some you tube videos and I saw this one about this family's home made kite at a festival (an eastern nation somewhere.. Philippines, Indonesia, Bali or something like that) but for the life of me I cannot find that video now. It was a drab, uncolored and unremarkable kite (kinda large though) except that they had this contraption on the top, like a little pyramid tower of bamboo/wooden pipes and once they got it airborn it was making the most trippiest of noises. It was a rigid pyramid.. so they weren't like wind chimes just banging together (which also might be a cool idea), but slotted in a way to create ghoulish organ/flute type sounds from the wind. Anyway, was just wondering if anyone has every seen anything like that and had schematics on how to cut those tubes to get those sound profiles. I have access to bamboo and something like that might make a nice accouterment. TIA Spiff
JoeDeF
Probably Vietnam? Here are a few links to Vietnamese flute kites (if the links work): https://docplayer.net/41475441-Dieu-sao-some-preliminary-notes-on-the-flute-kites-of-vietnam.html#show_full_text https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m3EmxL7yYg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYorZPk7n9o The last video shows them being made. I'd imagine that there's some skill in making them "sing" properly (the note choices are simple length ratios, but getting the opening to split the airstream to create the flute sound properly is probably tricky). spiff
Wow.. thanks JoeDef.. yep, that's exactly what I was talking about. The video's you found are much better than the one I was talking about. Yeah, that last one showing them making it is perfect! It might be cool to play around with what different materials generate sound-wise. To save on weight I'm thinking of just rolling my own paper tubes and shellac them for rigidity, if they still give good sound reverb. I'm picturing a single tube clipped to the top and leading edge of a delta so that the ends of the tube extend past the edge of the kite frame for wind current exposure, but it would mostly be hidden behind the kite. Single tube would be single note.. but a good start for annoying the neighbors. Gonna try a paper towel tube first just see what kind of sounds it'll generate. Edmond Dragut
will not work with any soft tubes especially paper and cardboard witch are sound absorbents and are not ridge enough to create reverberations . find a wood tubes ,bamboos, reeds, cane ore easier and probably a cheat buy a pan-flute
