Triangle tubes are a favorite target of the USPS. These are my last three deliveries, all within a 10-day span.

Do you have a kite store in your area? The proprietor probably knows most kiters, clubs, and fields in your area, and definitely wants you to succeed. You and your students are future business!

Don't let Wayne scare you away! He only flies quad-line kites (and maybe a dualie occasionally) and hasn't heard about Single-Line Kites yet. People fly SLKs in closer proximity than three to a football field all the time! Small kites and cotton string are not dangerous, so testing coffee stirrer tetrahedrals should not require extra insurance. If school admin insists on it, take your fly private— just meet somewhere, invite parents, have fun and let it grow! If the school allows, you could make other kinds of inexpensive kites and fly them. There are plans all over the Internet. Get your Art Dept. involved! Have fun! I'm a member of several "big-time kite clubs" and organizations, and our big-time problems are always (1) good wind, (2) an open space, and (3) showing up! It seems you have two items whipped— you just need steady winds of 7–15 mph, and that you cannot control. However, with experience and a variety of kites, you can eventually expand that wind window to 0–20+ mph. Import some experience. Ask your dualie friend. KiteLife has a larger audience, but only a few hundred subscribers, so try a Facebook search on "kite" and your location to find new kiter friends. Contact your AKA Regional Director for suggestions; he/she is there to help all kiters, not just AKA members. Once you get started, your kites in the air may act as beacons to draw interested local people to your club. Good luck!

DO NOT FLY ANYTHING IN A HURRICANE! EVER! Given that, if you want to fly in 20-mph winds, get some real line! I (another Houstonian) would not use anything less than 500#, but you might use 300# for smaller kites. Either way, buy bulk: 500' of 500#, $27; 300#, $20; 250#, $15, etc., plus shipping. https://goodwinds.com/line-winders/braided-dacron.html And always remember, SAFETY FIRST! Don't trust breaking strength over working load. Lines wear, knots weaken, etc., and, in a hurricane or even 20+ winds, flying debris can cut or damage lines. Also, larger lines are easier to handle when under large loads. A 100# line with a 100-lb load is like a knife blade in your hand!

No! Do not use the loops on the back! They are only to prevent the spreader spar from bending too much and breaking, and does not have the strength to support a stack. The simple way is to tie directly to your longeron (center spine), which may require puncturing your sail. Do so only after determining the point where the line of attack meets the spine: on a keeled delta, look down the line when flying to see where line would meet spine. On a non-keeled delta (flo-tail) with an adjustable bridle, best is to attach another adjustable bridle of the same size to the back of the kite using the same attachment points. You make the same size adjustments to the back bridle as the front, only in the opposite direction.

Box kites can be rock-steady in 20+ mph winds and can be scaled up to lift any KAP rig. There are many different kinds of box kites. Using a GoPro or other camera with a waterproof casing will take the worry out of wind shifts or other anomalies that might dunk your rig.
