  1. There used to be (1990 era) a kite shop at Trolley Square in Salt Lake, I think I recall the name "Air Apparent" It was small but they had quite a few kites packed into that space. I know I purchased at leased 1 kite there, but cant recall which one. I was there 2 seperate times attending a anual managers retreat while working at EGGHEAD. One year we got a tour of Sundance Ranch and Wordperfect, the second we went skiing on 12 inches of fresh powder. Man, was I disappointed when they closed all the retail stores, I enjoyed 10 of their 11 years, managing stores, first in the bay area then here in Tucson
  2. Tom, sounds like you got a couple of potential sponsors maybe you can get the church to pray for a new car
  3. Kyle, welcome to the forum and to the addictive new hobby/sport First recommendation is: if there are other kite fliers around go introduce yourself, be upfront about being a novice. Ask if you can observe them doing some maneuvers and if they can explain how they are done. Ask if they could give a little instruction while you are flying your kite. You will be surprised how much information will be offered now to your questions: first I would be afraid of staking a foil, my concern would be it launching while you are walking back to the handles My procedure to self launch is to run out the lines and attach to the kite lay the kite on its back with the leading edge (front) facing downwind (away from the handle/straps) if on the beach use sand, if on grass use some rocks, weight down the trailing edge so the kite will not float away return to the handles and slowly pull the kite towards you, the leading edge should now begin to inflate, it should then take off, so plant your feet, lean back and hold on To recover from a crash depending where you are in the wind window, and what position the kite is in you should be able to get it back in the sky with a little practice. if the kite is on its belly, try short alternating strokes while keeping the line tension, you are trying to get the leading edge to hop up enough to inflate if the kite is on its back with the leading facing you give a quick pull on one side and it should spin around and catch some wind not sure what you meant about the lines crossed, if the kite loops in one direction the line are crossed by looping the opposit direction they uncross a tip to help keeping control I have observed most new fliers let their arms go all over the place, which can cause problems. try to start out with your elbows close to your sides and only move your arms back and forth. there are 2 ways to turn the kite, first is to pull one handle back until the kite turns, the second is a push /pull where you pull back on one and push forward on the other Also, if you are having your girlfriend to assist, then be sure to give her a try at the controls. Its no fun to only be the ground crew Hope this helps, and have fun

  12. Jeff, Welcome to the kite world, hope you enjoy it as I have for 30+ years
  13. I will agree with the last train lines to be shorter, I only have a short stack of rev's (currently 2 - 1.5's) But I am going to add another 1.5 and a couple of rev II's. I do fly a lot of different dually stacks, and found when tuning the last kite I use a small piece of a stirring stick. I then grab a section of the train line and use a overhand knot on the stick, and test fly, and keep adjusting till I like the response of the last kite, then I measure and make the knot w/o the stick.
  14. Great info John, how did you get sooo smart. Another trick to get the kite upright without wear on the kite, and avoid the walk of shame. Bring a partner and have them act as ground crew.
  15. we all had faith in the return of your kite, excellent that you didnt have to wait too long.
  16. Thanks to all I had a great Birthday, baking, cooking, and kite flying. Today I pickup 2 Peter Powell 6 packs from the Post Office. Life is grand
  17. Congratulations Grant, If it couldn't be me you were the next best choice, have a great time flying your newest addition.
  18. What? I drove 120KPH, stopped at 3 Mexican checkpoints where guys were holding machine guns, waited at the border for an hour, raced into the house to see that I won, and Nada? TMF John? Hey, the good news is there was a Zephyr, and a new Hawaiian waiting for me.
  19. Wakey, wakey John it's the 15th here in San Carlos, MX, I need to see if there is reason to go back to Tucson to pick up my new vented. Good luck to all, if I win I will let everyone get it a fly at KP7
  20. mousie, or anyone else, We leave, from Tucson on the 8th, and drive to San Carlos (320 miles- about 5 hours) and stay for a week. The condo we have there has a extra bedroom with 2 queen beds, and there are a couple fold outs. The closest airport is Guaymas, (GYM) is about 20 min away. All you need is a passport and some Peso's, wont even need to bring kites, I'll have a large full. Oh, you will have to cook once or twice, let me know when to pick you up. 21. I promise this will be my last. **************************** Two days after Christmas, and the house is a bigger mess The boys ripped through the presents in ten minutes or less The wrapping paper was piled very, very high I guess they thought a maid would come by Brunch was prepared by all three sons Eggs, bacon, sausage, and cinnamon buns Juice, hash browns, fruit and such I know that I ate way too much After cleaning the kitchen the third time today I gathered my new kites and went out to play Giving spirit to the Luna Moths was the main goal They flew to the sky after a gently pull Looping, stalling, land, and re-launching as they should My son even flew, it has been awhile but he did quite good After about an hour it begins to rain, we pack up the kites and cruised down main The rain it continues to come down through the night, In the morning the mountains around us are quite a sight The top are all capped with fluffy white snow It looks really great, but as we all know The temperature will rise, and all will melt I be back in shorts, wearing my new belt Packing for a week in Mexico, is next on the list Spending the week, relaxing, and flying on the coast Thinking about February and the event I like the most Heading to Dave’s party is always the best, Meeting with old and new friends and all the rest Giving a show to the people on the pier I just want to scream “HAPPY NEW YEAR”
  22. I awoke this morning to the sound of the puppy whining in her kennel. I arose from my bed and descended the stairs, upon opening the door what a wondrous site did I see The trees were all bending, bowing down to the breeze The sky was black, still dark with the night, and no where could be seen a star shinning bright. The revs are all stacked and ready for flight And this is where I have my blight Its two days before Christmas and the house is a mess, with stacks of unwrapped presents waiting to be done The floors need to be mopped and guest beds need to be made Shopping for groceries is a must, if not, Christmas dinner will be a bust All these chores need to be completed, no time to rest, but I just can’t deny, going out an playing in the wind would be the best I get the wife off to work, packed with goodies, computer, and lunch I jump into my truck already loaded with kites, and go on the hunch that the field will be empty, cause everyone is looking for a place to park at the mall I drive to the field where groups of jogger have gathered but their number quite small I run out my line, larks head the ends, grab the handles and give a tug As the kites ascend and begin to soar, the joggers hear me yell Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a great day to fly Happy Holidays from Tucson
  23. Received the Avengers today. Kites in good shape, need a few parts (I was advised before purchase) I ordered today. I removed the stack lines to create pigtails.
