Karma 10/29/13 - 10' Inflatable Airplane Kite
dragonfish replied to dragonfish's topic in Karma Drawings
Two more days! I've just updated the list in the first post. In case I made a mistake, please let me know ASAP. (Also, I got the stake from the previous drawing yesterday. Pics in the gallery for those interested.) -

This is the kite stake from the 10/15/13 karma drawing. Used it today when I went out to fly with some friends. Thanks Joespickles, LS Kite Accessories, and everyone who's helped make the karma drawings happen and keep them going. -

Karma 10/29/13 - 10' Inflatable Airplane Kite
dragonfish replied to dragonfish's topic in Karma Drawings
Wow, really off to a great start. I've updated the list on the first post. With the flood of interest, I hope I didn't screw up somewhere. I think it goes both ways.................DLK or SLK ! Kinky, eh??? :cat_lol: I think it does go both ways, but I didn't try it as an SLK. The bridle has 2 attachment points, so the DLK part is obvious. I'm not sure how you would set it up as an SLK. I did, however, stake it as a DLK with the handles about a yard apart, so even as a DLK, it can be flown "hands off". -
Alright everyone, I've got a big one here this time. It's a 10' inflatable airplane kite by Gomberg Kites. For those of you with very good memories, yes, this is the one I won from the Kitelife subscriber drawing several years ago (many thanks to Kitelife and JB). Frankly though, I've discovered that I'm not a "big kite" flier, so I'd like to pass it on to another lucky member of the Kitelife family who will fly it more than I will. It can be flown as a dual line kite, and 200# x 100' line with padded handles are included. Here's your chance. Normal karma rules apply. Numbers will be assigned in the order you say "I'm in." Drawing will be held late 10/29 west coast time. Shipping to North America only. Good luck. Here's the list: 1. bbailey49 2. ninja 3. windpoacher 4. makatakam 5. mystaynedskin 6. Tmadz 7. Reef Runner 8. woodpekr 9. XD1 10. Bethanie Wilson 11. Mr. Robin McCracken 12. GammoRay 13. Hasek 14. skline 15. oldcaptainrusty 16. Jynx 17. Paul LaMasters 18. MrDenny 19. Flyatx 20. Anivdel 21. Karma 10/15/13 - LS Custom Kite Accessories ground stake
dragonfish replied to Joespickles's topic in Karma Drawings
Oh wow, I won! Thanks. Guess this makes up for not winning any of the raffles at AKA Convention last week. Joespickles: PM coming your way. -
Don't worry about it John. I'm grateful that I even got to fly with you that day. While I was excited for the mega team, I didn't really want to jump headfirst into the deep end (mega team) on the main field at a festival in front of a huge audience before I had some experience in a less stressful setting. Plus, when the next festival came around (Morro Bay earlier this year), I was ready for the megafly of 14 Revs! Exciting. Thanks for the mention. I'm really looking forward to Nationals too. And I'm competing in Open Multiline Pairs too. Couldn't get enough of flying with others, even if it's just one other, once it started.

Last year, when I was wanting to get into team flying, I looked for an opportunity to chat with JB about it at the Berkeley Kite Festival when he appeared to be not busy. It was toward the end of the festival and he was shortly on deck for some demos, but he invited me to fly with him and some others after the end of scheduled activities. I must say it was an awesome experience flying team for the first time with JB. Plus, I learned a ton in that probably less than an hour. Express your interest to others when not flying. You'll get an invitation soon. Having flown with others for more than a year now, it seems that people who fly team love flying team and getting more people to fly team with them. Good luck.

Ooooohhhhh shinyyyyyy...... Oh yea, I'm supposed to say "I'm in!" -
In English, please. I didn't take French. Sexy, isn't it ! (I think that's right) or NOT Haha, I thought it was Japanese. Translation is pretty much what I thought it meant though. Joespickles: Congrats on the win. I had a few numbers on this one too. Very pretty kite.

David, welcome to Kitelife. Those airplane-shaped kites are really cool. I'm glad to be lucky enough to have seen you fly them in person (at BKF and various other times at the Berkeley marina). Didn't realize how fast they flew though. I'd definitely be interested in a workshop. Got to keep my eyes open for it now. By the way, I'm Joanna and I fly with BASKL too. Somehow missed you on kite clinic day.

My local Trader Joe's has some kites up at the back of the store for decoration and a few more painted on the window. I noticed them a little while back but didn't snap some pictures until yesterday. I remember seeing some thread or maybe it was one of JB's Facebook posts asking for examples of kites used in logos outside the kiting community. I was unable to find it again. I also don't remember if it was just talking about logos or any kind of kite usage, but I thought I'd share anyway.

When you take a couple of kites on a plane like that, is it your carry-on or the personal item that airlines let you take in addition to your carry-on suitcase? Last time I flew, I took kites with me in a document tube. I checked my suitcase though, so the kites were my carry-on item. I'm going on a trip again soon, but I don't want to check my bag this time, so I'm not sure if I'm taking kites (sadly mine don't fit in a carry-on suitcase).

Thanks for the compliment, John. I'd love to fly on your team line again. Thanks for getting me started on team flying. I sure learned a lot, and it's super fun too.

Alright, it took a while, but I finally got someone to help me out with this, and got some pictures too. So for those of you who were giving me a hard time in that other thread, I hope you are satisfied now. It was pretty awesome when we got it up. And almost from the get-go there were these 3 little boys who were extremely excited about it. They wouldn't leave until the wind died down enough that we couldn't easily relaunch. Once again, thank you Kitelife. (And yes, the grass is very dry at the Berkeley marina this year, for anyone who's wondering.)

Thanks everyone for all the info. I think I'll be getting a 90# by 120' set soon. John and Watty, I'm excited to hear you'll be coming to the festival in Berkeley. I'll be sure to say hi. As for the inflatable airplane, that thing is HUGE. I must admit, I'm a little scared by the size of it. Considering that I have next to no experience with dual line kites (or large display kites for that matter) and that I usually go to the marina by myself, I decided to play it safe and not try something I maybe can't handle on my own yet (yes, I'm a bit risk averse too). Someday...
-
I am aware that 120' is the commonly accepted line length for team flying, but what about line weight? Is there a particular line weight that almost everyone uses or just plain works better for team flying? Also, how important is it to have the same weight lines when flying team? I typically fly at the Berkeley Marina, where winds can often get pretty strong, so I've been recommended to get 150# lines. However, all my current line sets are 90# and they seem to work fine for me. I want to get a 120' line set so I can fly with others and get in on mega flies if I get the opportunity. I'd like to get something that would work regardless of whether I'm flying at the marina or somewhere else. What would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance for the advice.

I know I seemed to have disappeared for the past week or so after my previous submission, but I've been trying to tweak them for better readability, and here's what I've got. I'm not sure how much of an improvement I've made, but I tried a bunch of things, and I think these are as good as I'm going to be able to make them for these particular design ideas. I've seen some really cool designs here lately, so I'm sure whichever one gets chosen as the winner will be a good one. Thanks for the opportunity to design a new logo for Kitelife.

Wow, I set my drafts aside for several days and all of a sudden the deadline is approaching. I've got color variations on two rather different ideas. The first was inspired by the shape of the symbol for infinity, representing the endless joy of kiting. The second was an attempt to capture the wide variety of kites seen today, instead of focusing on sport kites (saw a comment related to this somewhere). Since I don't have Adobe Illustrator, I created these in vector (svg) format in Inkscape. Hopefully it will be possible to import into or open with AI. Thanks for looking.

Wow, I won! Awesome Guess it's time for me to come out of my shell and say hi to everyone instead of quietly browsing the forums. And thanks, John, for all the great resources on this website and more importantly for the prize! Joanna
