Sleeves - HUH?

I don't own any linesets without sleeves. When I took some 100' dual lines and chopped them in half for what became 45' quad lines, I got some sleeving material to sleeve them. Yet, I hear folks say that they fly without sleeves.

Why do people not use sleeves? Seems to me it would be harder to remove the larks head when taking the lines down. ;)

I'd like to hear from you all who don't use sleeves. WHY NOT???

Later, Doug

I haven't used sleeving on annything except 50# in years... They used to say that it lowers the strength by 60% at the knot or something, but I've never had it break on the knot... Only down the line, usually at the friction point where they cross.

Reasons?

- I'm too lazy.

- Haven't had any problems yet.

My only exception is Rev lines, as I like the white/black sleeving to keep top and bottom straight.

That's not true. Well, sorta is, sorta isn't.

If you tie your sleeving with a basic overhand knot, then yes, your reduce the line strenght. However, this is not because of the sleeving itself, it's because of the knot. A typical overhand knot is part of the category called '50% knots'. Meaning, that kind of knot has only 50% of line strength at the knot.

To preseve line strenght, use a figure eight knot. It is a 100% knot. (It retains 100% of the line strength or near enough anyways).

Now, go here: To sleeve, or not to sleeve.

My theory is, use sleeving.

It will increase the life of your bridle line. Why? Because you won't have the sharp, narrow spectra line cutting into it.

It is easier to remove the larks head from the pigtail when you have sleeving. (non-sleeved lines can be pretty hard to undo when there has been a lot of pull on the larks head knot)

Use different color sleeving to EASILY identify left and right.

Somebody told me once to always use sleeving. So, I always use sleeving ;)

Cheers,

P.
