I am leaning towards the Zephyr. I have an email to Prism requesting the assembled weight. If they come back with the right weight(right weight in my mind anyway), I will have my answer. And as a side note - The reason that I originally decided against the Zephyr was because of the advice given to me on the Kymera. I was offered the Kymera for a great price by my local kite shop CobraKites. But when asked about it's low wind capabilities, I was told to look elsewhere for a low wind kite, because by the time you adjusted the kymera for what I am looking to do, I will have "taken the Kymera out of the Kymera". Given that the Zephyr and Kymera are very similar in price, materials and design, I assume this to be true for he Zephyr as well. But when you posted about the Zephyr being very capable in low winds with the right adjustments...it was put back into the running.

Low Wind Kite Suggestions - Silver Fox It Is
JaseRicco replied to JaseRicco's topic in General Sport Kite
@Exult Not a fan of the Prism 4d, which is a shame because I love Prism kites, and the Shadow is a bit too expensive. -
@Wayne Dowler as always, great info and good points. Again, I am not looking for anything that is going to stay aloft miraculously. Just looking for a kite that is going to stay aloft in low wind conditions the easiest. I would assume the kites that are going to do this would be the ones with less mass to them. And in order to achieve less mass kite designers will have to look to higher end materials, which will in turn cost more to those of us that wish to purchase. I would assume that design is a big factor as well. Just because something weighs close to nothing does not mean it will fly. With that said, I have narrowed my choices down to the Zephyr, Acrobatx UL, and Silver Fox 2.3 & 2.5 UL's. This is due to a combination of price, materials used, and the feedback that has been given on each.
-
@kitedad I looked at kites from both SkyBurner & SkySportDesign, but these are out of my price range...for now. And the reason that I am hesitant in purchasing the Silver Fox is due to the weight. Most of the UL's I look at seem to come in at about 7-8 oz...give or take of course. But the Silver Fox 2.3 & 2.5 are both over 11oz, which is just 4 oz less than my Quantum. I just don't see how something that heavy would make a good UL for low wind conditions. But every review of the Silver Fox's seem to be good. I don't know.

I haven't seen this anywhere else. I wonder if R Sky is the only one that procures this type of brake.

Wondering if anyone has any opinions regarding Flying Wings Kites both in general as a company that fabricates kites, and more specifically about both the Acrobatx UL & Silver Fox UL.

Prism 25th Anniversary Special Edition Quantum
JaseRicco replied to JaseRicco's topic in Kite Photographs
Awesome!! Glad your enjoying it as much as I have. -
Hi, Munimula, and welcome to the forum.
-
Welcome Fluke. I love Prism kites...they are my favorite manufacturers of mass produced kites. I recently got my hands on the Prism Quantum 25th Anniversary SE and love it. It's a great all around flyer. The Hypnotist is on my list of Prism kites to acquire. But first I have to fill my low & high wind needs.

Zephyr good for use as low wind kite?? - Silver Fox It Is
JaseRicco replied to JaseRicco's topic in General Sport Kite
I think that's the problem. I'm looking for something that doesn't exist. I want a kite that handles low winds good enough, I want it to have a nice size wing span, and I want to spend under $150. The more high end materials you use for making bigger lighter kites, the more price is going to increase. The only reasons I even mentioned the Zephyr is one, because I love Prism, and two, because I saw a Zephyr priced very well @ $148 brand new. Otherwise I wouldn't be looking at it given its average price of about $210. But the other half of your response is what I am looking for regardless. Someone who has a Zephyr, and has some real experience. I appreciate the response. -

@windwarrior @khsidekick That's awesome guys...ENJOY as I have. -
This is what I will be looking for at some point in the future...after I find my low wind kite. Something like the HQ Fazer, and I especially like that New HQ Whizz...that is one stealthy looking kite. They both look like they can handle a lot.
-
That's a fair question. Might be expecting too much from a tail or air brake. Certainly don't want to ruin my kite.
-
First I am curious if anyone has experience using a “Stunt Kite Air Brakes”? They have them down at my local kite shop, not expensive at all, about $10. I posted a pic for those unfamiliar with what I am talking about. Apparently they are used for those blustery days when flying is almost out of the question for most of the moderate wind stunt kites. My next question is regarding tube tails. Other than the obvious use, memorizing sky show, can you use a tube tail to absorb and bleed some of the wind for those higher wind days that may be a bit too much for your all around kite? I am trying to come up with options until I can get that designated higher wind kite. And it could be that a Kite Air Brake or Tube Tail might be the answer…for now.

Great advice

This is exactly why I stated in my other post, "Zephyr good for low wind kite??", that I am hestitant in purchasing the Zephyr given that it may be too advanced, sophisticated, techy...basically too much kite for me. If all I am looking for is a kite that I can fly when the Quantum does not, then I am not sure I need to make such a huge leap to the Zephyr. The other side of course is that this is a hobby that I am very interested in. And with that interest I will progress in my ability, and hopefully that means having evough skill and know how when it comes to tricking. So why not have a kite that I can use solely as a low wind kite for now, but grow into later. Plus I found such a great deal on a Zephyr, its hard to pass up. SO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT. But what a great problem to have . This is the other part of a hobby that I love...the research, talking to the experts and gathering the info and opinions. Fun Fun Fun

@Wayne Dowler @makatakam I def. understand that specs are all about best and worst case scenarios. It's like anything else...even Fuel Economy as an example. Purchase a vehicle and the specs will tell you that you can get 40mpg. What they don't tell you is that the car better be in tip top shape, the road conditions better be optimal, the weather better be stellar and the driver better be consistent. You have to take ALL information with a grain of salt I always say. That's why I have tried to get across in my various posts regarding low wind kites, that I am not expecting the kite I purchase for low wind conditions to zip around in Zero wind without having to do a lot to make that happen. I don't even want it to fly great in one, two, or three mph winds. What I am simply looking for is a kite that will fly easier on those days that the Quantum struggles a bit to stay aloft. On those days when you adjust the bridle for lower winds, throw lighter lines on, and the Quantum still just sort of flutters out. For example, at our local kite night last Wednesday, we had lighter winds in the beginning. But because my Quantum is so new, and I jump at every chance to fly that I can, I decided to give it a go. I can't be for sure what the winds actually were, but they were steady out of the E coming right off the ocean, just a bit too light. I adjusted the bridle but the Quantum still just kind of stalled out floating to the ground each time. Now if I felt like it, I probably could have ran around like a lunatic finagling this thing to stay in the air, but that's just not the kind of flying I enjoy at this point. So I can't help but think that I would have been able to pack up the Quantum at that point, break out the Zephyr, and had a good time flying, instead of getting frustrated and having to wait 2hrs for the wind to pick up. This is what I am looking for. This is what started my hunt for a good low wind kite. On a side note, looking at the information I posted here about the Spectre, what are your thoughts regarding the Spectre vs. the Zephyr, though I think I already know the answers

@Wayne Dowler @makatakam Thank you both for being patient and taking the time to educate a newb. I was hoping for the answer I received, because I love the Zephyr, and even better, the advice and info came from both of you.
