how to safely transport extra frame?

I have 2 wrap frame for my NYM and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions regarding transport it safely. I've never had extra sticks to take to the field before and am a little worried I might bust one before I get to fly it.... I've got a couple of large dual line kite bags, but nowhere to safely put spars in. I know the Rev specific bags have a slot for them, but I probably won't be able to afford one for awhile. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Dave

Until I got a Rev bag I just kept them in the sleeve with the kite. Never had a problem. The PVC is heavy, and I wouldn't want to add any more weight to the 40-50lbs of Revs I'm carrying now, unless of course it's another Rev.

I too use a heavy duty, cardboard shipping tube (approx 2 1/2" diameter), that has the white plastic plugs in each end. I put a piece of foam padding down in the bottom end, and secured that plug with shipping tape. On the other (top) end, I have another piece of thick (1") foam, that I insert into the tube, on top of the ends of my spare rods, and then I insert the white plastic plug. I did cut the cardboard tube to a length, which was approximately 2 inches longer than the actual rods. I leave each spare set of rods, right in the long plastic bags, that they usually come in, and drop the whole package, right into the cardboard tube. Holds everything nice and secure. :ani_victory:

Several of us use a 4" Alvin plastic document tube to store / transport all our Rev frames. Perfect length and It will also hold a couple of revs rolled together with the extra frame and protect your kite / frames in the overhead bin on an airline. At less than $20 shipped from Amazon it's a deal!

Not if you use lighter schedule PVC! That's why I also suggested the cardboard tube, easy to get at a PO!

Some very good suggestions here. I went out to fly some Revs today and think I've come up with a temporary fix. I took my Prism speed bag, which holds between 3 and 5 kites. it has a full length, rather stout carbon rod to help the little bag hold its shape. I put the framing in the slot next to the big carbon rod. As suggested above, I left it in the plastic bag it came in. One thing I always do in these open ended bags is put the kite sleeves in open end first, so the stitched closed end of the sleeve pocket keeps anything from slipping out. I did the same with the spare frame and I think for now at least, I'm good. Thanks for all the great advice!

It should be fine to store your extra spars rolled up alongside the other spars in your kite.

I carry so many extra rods, I use a regular kite sleeve to put them in, then put it all in my kite bag (fine even as checked luggage).

Another option, some folks use the bag from a folding camping chair to store/carry kites and rods.

John,

That is genius! I got the camping chair out of the garage. The bag holds all four revs and the 2 wrqp frame. I have a little mesh bag for handles line sets and a stake.

It even looks nice! this is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
