Big L Posted March 28, 2016 Report Posted March 28, 2016 I have been flying cheap Walmart kites since I was a kid. I'm ready to take it to the next level. However, I'm not sure what would be a good 1st kite. Here are the few I'm thinking about: ITW Kymera http://www.thekiteshoppe.com/products/ITW-Kymera-by-John-Barresi.html Prism E3 http://www.thekiteshoppe.com/products/Prism-E3-Graphite.html Prism Quantum http://www.thekiteshoppe.com/products/Prism-Quantum-Sport-Kite.html Revolution EXP http://www.thekiteshoppe.com/products/Revolution-EXP-Package.html Prism Zephyr http://www.thekiteshoppe.com/products/Prism-Zephyr.html What do you all think? Should I get one of these or something else? 1 Quote
SparkieRob Posted March 28, 2016 Report Posted March 28, 2016 Budget and wind speed. The EXP is a totally different animal to the others but will do EVERYTHING in any Rev video you've seen. Has certain limitations. I started quads on an EXP and it was a blast! I have flown the Quantum and the Zypher. The Quantum is a fairly "heavy" kite. Needs a bit of wind to get going. Very robust and has some great crash coping mechanisms. Made well. The Zypher is a lighter wind kite. Not a delicate low wind kite. I found it OK. Response was good, finish was good. Heard mixed reviews of the E3. Heard lots of good about the Kymera. Look for RTF kite packages. Ready to fly. That means they come with lines and straps/handles. If you are dealing with The Kite Shoppe, Theresa is very good to deal with. Tell her what you are after and your budget and she won't steer you wrong, personal experience with her. Quads or duals, couldn't hurt to get one of each... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Big L Posted March 28, 2016 Author Report Posted March 28, 2016 Thanks. Wind range is from light to moderate. The last few days at times there was barely enough wind to keep my Walmart kite up. My budget is between $200-$300. Quote
Wayne Dowler Posted March 28, 2016 Report Posted March 28, 2016 With that as a budget - I suggest trying used kites. If you find you don't link up with something, you can resell it for almost what you paid - depending of course on how you treated it! Plus it will give you a chance to try a variety - again to know what YOU like, as far as the style of kite, your expectations, etc. Just watching here for kites FS (for sale) or FT (for trade) can get you into things on the cheap, until you settle into a groove of what strikes your fancy! cerfvoliste Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 I vote for the Zypher, heavy on the lines for good feed back, and capable of modern tricks. @ No Matter Where You Go, There You Are. 1 Quote
Big L Posted March 29, 2016 Author Report Posted March 29, 2016 I'm lean towards the zephyr or ITW. Quote
John Barresi Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 I wouldn't suggest the Kymera as a first kite acquisition... A lot of Prism's stuff is built to withstand the learning curve, and at that stage the easy availability of parts from Prism can also be very useful. Quote

Paramedic Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 Very nice choices.. I initially bought me a prism nexus and it was great. Decent price and nice small package. I got a rev 1.5 B after that, and havent regreted it a bit. I am saving up for my next delta and rev. 1 Quote

SHBKF Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 6 hours ago, Big L said: I guess it will be the Zephyr Watching this topic progress I have been secretly pulling for the "Z". I bought mine when I finally decided to give dualies a serious try. Mine was purchased with little kite knowledge & lots of raw emotion. I just got lucky I guess. It was the first kite that really wowed me. It's still one of my frequently flown kites. Best wishes on your new KiteLife. SHBKF Quote
RobB Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 If you're inland, the Zephyr will probably be a good choice. Not as tough as the Hypnotist or Quantum, but still pretty tough for a lighter kite. Sent from my LG-K330 using KiteLife mobile app 1 Quote

I would be curious about a weight comparison between the Zephyr, Quantum and Hypnotist/Mirage. @ No Matter Where You Go, There You Are. Quote
RobB Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 I'm mainly going by wind range, I don't know the exact weight comparisons. I do have all 3 kites, and I know that the Hypnotist & Quantum need a good 5-7mph to start flying, while the Zephyr needs less... how much less ? That's been a subject of debate for the last 10 years, but I can fly mine easily in 3-5 mph of wind. With work, and without the upper spreader installed, I can fly the Z in lower winds, but tricks are out of the question at that point. Quote
John Barresi Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 I think the Zephyr is both lighter (sail to weight ratio) and more efficient than either the Quantum or Hypnotist which are really entry level kites as opposed to the Zephyr which is more of an intermediate+ kite.
