A few of us DC Misfits got our hands on a custom Djinn this weekend. Per usual the wind was, well, non existent. And per usual, these guys make it look easy.

I’ve got a dji Spark and love it. Lots to think about when flying a quadcopter. . Take your time to learn the ins and outs of the quadcopter. Wind conditions are a big factor. Battery life. Proper connection from RC to phone to quad. Learn what to do in case of disconnect between devices (don’t panic). RTH ( return to home) button is your friend. Watch for radio wave interference. The list of things to think about before sending it up is huge. I can go on and on but if you have questions don’t hesitate. With all the help you’ve given me over last couple yrs I’m glad to return the favor. Oh and first thing, register yourself with the FAA. it’s only $5 and it’s the law. Problem with uploading vids to Facebook is that they compress the heck out of it. Image quality is diminished big time. I’ve used YouTube for yrs and for music I use their YouTube Audio Library. TonyK If you want a visual example of what NOT to do on your first few flights you should checkout my video on YouTube aptly titled “Worst Rev Flight Ever - Day 2” Keep in mind that I did not seek out any help at all before I dove into this. I bought a EXP at the beach and went for it. So already, compared to me, you’re way ahead of the game. I just watched the video again for the first time in a while and here are a few things that pop out. THE KITE vs WIND CONDITIONS I had 15-20 mph winds for my first outings with the EXP. It was a bit of a struggle as can be seen in the video. A vented kite would made this a little easier. SETUP- Notice the leading edge is facing up. I had no idea but for safety reasons setup with leading edge in the sand. I used spars for stakes cuz it’s all I had. Tangled lines? Oh yeah that’s gonna happen just be very patient. STANCE - Wow am I stiff or what??? I know the wind was strong but for crying out loud man, relax. My legs are all over the place and my arms are flailing as if I was directing a plane onto the tarmac. Keep arm movement to a minimum, try to keep elbows in close to your body and concentrate on wrist movements, that’s what really guides the kite. If you checkout my video titled “rev flight fail with lucky recovery” you’ll clearly see that my arm movements do NOTHING to prevent the kite from going into the water. No need to white knuckle the handles. Relax your hands and try to control the handles with the tip of your fingers. I had so much fun that first week I spent hours on that beach. That’s the key really just have fun. I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong until I met some locals who had a few ( a lot ) of pointers to help me make things much easier to learn. If possible, before you head to Mexico get together with some local flyers and have them help you out, this will chop off many hours from your learning curve. Dave, I lived in Fort Myers yrs ago before I got into Kites. I’ve been back and loved flying on the causeway heading to Sanibel Island. You can also try the lighthouse on the island great spot there. If you are going to fort Myers Beach, a good spot is to walk down the beach about a mile. That will bring you to the end of beach/ island which is pretty much empty once you get there. To show what perseverance does, I should've started this thread with the first ever Rev video I posted on my YouTube channel. Should've been entitled "what first time Rev flyers shouldn't do". [emoji12] I just watched it for the first time in over a year and good lord what a wrecking ball. 15 minutes of raw footage- maybe 8 minutes of flying and half of that is not even in frame.LMAO Setting up and launching with leading edge up? Check Using travel rods as stakes. Yes, rods, one for each handle. Leaders way too powered up. That's just a few. The title is very accurate but one thing I did right. I didn't fly around if any one got remotely close to my window. I was a menace to society on that beach but as always perseverance will just keep me going. The key for me is that no matter how frustrating at times, it's fun. Even when I make a mistake I'm smiling at the fact that I even attempted a certain maneuver and the smile gets bigger realizing that eventually it will come. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Maka, looking back it seems like I spent the first yr just learning about the aspects of flying. Different locations, learning about the wind and how to make the kite fly or not no matter the conditions. Can't tell you how many times I went out just to realize that day was not gonna be ideal. Even on those days I learned something about flying. This weekend I learned something with the WOW club here in DC. I can hover in any directions, for minutes on end. Put me in with a team fly as I attempted for the first time Sunday…and my brain shuts down and I can't hold the position. WTF right? First instinct was what's wrong with my kite. I step away from the team and no problem. Back in, same problem. It's not the gear, it's The pilot. In short I spent the first yr learning about flying and the technique really started to click in the last 6 months. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Since I can remember I've always loved movies, especially making my own. So it's no surprise that from my first day with a quad I'd be documenting my progress. As I was making this short film a few things came to mind. First and foremost, how much fun I have. Setting up the shot, flying, editing, all of it great fun for me. The second thing these little movies show me? I want to improve everything! Which brings me to the last thing. After a year and a half, I'm actually improving! … and now for a happy tale. I just recently got my hands on two new kites. A full vent phantom 1.5 and the vented Polo Rev just in time for a short 4 day trip to Dewey DE. Lucky for me the weather was such that I never had to breakout my old beat up EXP. 4 days of perfect 15 mph winds with strong gusts. Now, back to the city with crappy winds and limited space. When it comes to trying things with a Rev for the first time, I'm a " just go for it" kind of guy which usually spells disaster. City living means very limited spaces to regularly practice. I have a nice spot nearby however if the wind is coming from the East, not so great. I decided to give a parking garage a try. 5 stories high and basically empty top floor on weekends. I take my beat up EXP and give it a go. 2 things I didn't consider. Concrete is not as smooth as I thought. Lines got caught on the ground quite a bit and would easily get sliced if yanked on too hard. Second thing…damn lamp posts. Of course I had to push my luck and play around the posts and of course the lines got caught and I had to break one of them to get the kite down. Good thing is, I now have a nice set of 30 foot lines. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
