NASA Para Wing Quad (NPW)

West Australian

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone here has ever flown a Quad NASA Para Wing Kite?

Or seen someone else fly one?

I know there are Single line, Dual Line And Quad Line Variations, They look very unusual in shape.

They are a single skin, Frameless Kite. They seem to be getting quite popular in the Power Kite scene.

I have seen places selling 0.6sqm - 32sqm ( 6.5sqft - 345sqft )

I have the plans to make one too, Nearly did a few years ago.

So, Thoughts?

I have one I made after flying one in Wrightsville Beach, this thing pulled like a freight train. Wind around 15 mph, wing span only 2 feet wide, and about 2 feet tall, the Plans I have can be flown as a two line or quad line. Bridling is quite a challenge.

it was, but I learned a lot making it. I'll try and post some pictures of it,

Pictures of Your NPW would be awesome Dude!

I flew my 2.5m NPW recently.

The wind was lower than the suggested wind speed most of the time.

And did not get to half the Max wind.

I was very happy with how it flew reasonably well in the low wind.

The sail was not full constantly and did require a little bit of back stepping and Arm movement. (Skills straight from Rev Sail Loading - Thanks JB)

But it did fly :)

When the wind did pick up a little here and there, The Power was starting to come through.

It was very easy to see how strong this NPW is going to be when I get a decent wind.

Control wise, it is nothing like a Rev. The NPW was very easy to over command and disrupt sail pressure.

Taking it slowly was best.

I am really looking forward to flying in a stronger wind.

I will try to post some video of it later.

Does this kite generate lift with speed? I have a Flexifoil Bullet 2.5 (designed for buggys) and I fly it in sideways figure eights to generate speed, and pull. I can pump the bar to fly figure eights and get close to twice the pull as I would just letting it sit stationary. Quite the workout!

It sure Does.

I got a few good figure 8's in. The Pull was noticeably increased.

I also found it was reasonably good at hovering too.

I had trouble keeping the sail full in a low wind hover though.

I hope to be able to get some power from a mid wind window hover.

I flew one at the Frank Mots Festival last year. Fun to fly, likes it slow and easy. Move too fast in lighter wind and the sail collapses. This one was about 5' from stem to stern and pulled pretty good in 4-6mph wind. Completely different beast than the Rev with nowhere near the control or precision.
