Dogstakes

I Just came back from my trip in Guatemala! There was no wind at all any where... I had a chance to fly my Guatemalan kite in a town 3 hour away from the city. Everything else was just beatifull, my daughters and wife had plenty of fun and we are back in bussiness, school, job search etc, etc,...

My question goes to John Barresi (Lee Sedwick too) who is (are) real pros at dogstakes flying technicks.: I am going to try flying my flat kite with dogstakes but I can sense that steel is to coarse for the lines, in other words they feel too tight and may damage the lines easily, what do you use? is there a place where we can buy special made dogstakes for kite flying? or do make them yourself? you need ceramic rings that the lines pass thru, the rings are angled towards each other so the string only touches the ceramic portion. (you need two of them!)

I bought fishing tackle rings and used an half circular shaped bolt with 2 part epoxy as the adhesive. The lines will still have some resistance, but it's much less than just hookin' around a dog stake!

Somewhere John has a diagram I prepared that lists the parts, I've just not gotten around to an actual photograph.

i tried dogstake flying for the first time today with my 1.5 i had it up for a while but i couldnt do anything fancy like in the john B video but ill get there hopefully john if your watchin killer video it looked eazy until i tried it the worst part was that people were watching me and i wasnt doing it good at all next time im going to a place where noone is at until i get good then i will go public with the fall season ill have plent of closed beach to do it

yes you can do it with a dual line, I've done it once, it's weird. you can dogstake any kite I would imagine, even a single line, lol

Off the cuff, John can improvise. I've seen him fly a dual line in a parking lot, using a light pole instead of the dog stake. Stopped people in their tracks, trying to figure out what the heck he was doing. One guy was in his 18 wheeler rig, got out and came over for a chat. Darndest thing he'd ever seen.

It probably won't kill you but you may hurt quite a bit after a hard days work, don't forget you hard hat

something that may or may not help is to switch the handles, right one in the left hand and left one in the right hand. because of your perspective of the kite it may help you.

Indeed, switch hands... The key is to look at the back of the kite (since you're downwind), and fool yourself into thinking it's the front.

Doing this, with the handles switched, should have it flying normally for you.
