SparkieRob Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 G'day all. Today I put my first Rok up into the air. Man it was sweet! As I was bringing it in, I was holding it by the bridle. I noticed that to some extent it could be directed by manipulating the 4 points of the bridle. It got me thinking... Has anybody heard of or flown a Rok as a quad? 2 Quote
John Barresi Posted June 7, 2013 Report Posted June 7, 2013 I've thought about it, but never seen it. Quote
SparkieRob Posted June 7, 2013 Author Report Posted June 7, 2013 Give me a week. Should have a photo or video....Fail or succes. Watch this space. 5 Quote
SparkieRob Posted June 20, 2013 Author Report Posted June 20, 2013 Well it's been more than a week.... Haven't put it into the air YET. I've put in the tow attachment points, carefully measured to be equal. I'll still treat the bow set up as normal with a little extra in the bottom, I can always equalise that in the field. I'll use my short lines first and a relatively gentle breeze just in case.... 3 Quote

Materdaddy Posted May 17, 2016 Report Posted May 17, 2016 Now it's been even more than a week... Any progress? Quote
John Barresi Posted May 17, 2016 Report Posted May 17, 2016 I did this in 2013, it works - be curious to hear how Rob got on. Quote
Materdaddy Posted May 17, 2016 Report Posted May 17, 2016 Sorry for necroposting... I couldn't resist when going through old threads finding something that said "in a week." Since Rob is still active, and a friend of mine has a (cheap X-Kites Rok) I thought I'd give this a bump. 2 Quote
DeafThunder Posted May 17, 2016 Report Posted May 17, 2016 I am missing something big in here ... what is a Rok ? ??? this http://www.my-best-kite.com/rokkaku-kite.html into a quad line version ??? Quote
Materdaddy Posted May 17, 2016 Report Posted May 17, 2016 That's my understanding. I'd love to see one of these flying as a quad. Quote
SparkieRob Posted May 17, 2016 Author Report Posted May 17, 2016 Distracted is the only way I can say it... I set it up with some small plastic rod larksed to the bridle. Measured and tied so they were even, 100mm or 4". I ran through 2 scenarios of flight. With the spine vertical, a little bit more bow in the bottom cross spa. With the spine horizontal, with the bow even side to side. Should dust it off, got a little bit of free time. Hmmm... Sent from my iPhone using KiteLife mobile app 2 Quote

I just put pig tails at each equally spaced bridle attachment points on the kite (4), of course it was really slippery in the air and awkward to do anything more than nudge it around the kite - I class this whole idea as pure amusement, not much more - Rokkaku kites just don't lend themselves aerodynamically. John Barresi Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 Yeah, basically. Or a double diamond, squared out between. Symmetrical (top/bottom) quad kites just don't appeal to me, I like to have a dominant forward edge with a flexible trailing edge - same as with most of the successful quad line kites over the years. makatakam Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 @DeafThunder Rok = Rokkaku. It is a type of kite. Google it. @John Barresi I'll have to take some pics of my early home-made quads and post them. Most are quite squirrely, but manageable. Quote
makatakam Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 Just remembered I have some pics: The first one is my own design. The second is a "Skysong Cool" SLK converted to quad. The two white triangles are keels that stabilize it. 1 Quote

makatakam Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 A lot of Single Line Kites can be converted to quad-line; they just don't fly very well. Quote
makatakam Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 Here's a quad-line delta parafoil I designed and built in 2009. Sorry about the picture quality. Quote

makatakam Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 Sluggish, typical for quad foils. Had a tendency to deflate when reversed too quickly. The nose tended to roll over forward until I put a flexible 3/32" fiberglass spar in that ran the full length of the intakes. Quote
