Vented Rev...

So, I finally trashed my first Rev, the Full Vent. I've been really missing something, like there's a hole in my bag. The FV was my most flown Rev, partly because I've had it the longest, and also because we frequently get winds ~20mph +/-. I've flown the FV in winds up to 40mph (I wonder how it got trashed ?) I don't really fly Revs until the wind is over 10mph, and I have a mid-vent that comfortably takes me to 15mph.

So, I'm at the point of looking for the replacement, and just noticed that the NYM triple vent is rated in between the FV and the Extra Vent. Up until now, the choice was between the two, but now, it looks like the NYM might be perfect because I can't buy both a FV and EV at the same time. Would the NYM triple be the perfect compromise ?

Any thoughts ? Anyone flown all 3 ? Am I giving anything up by choosing one over the other ?

Thanks for any input, I'm ready to call up my kite dealer, just want to make sure I ask him for the right one.

Not to muddy the waters but have you considered a PoloVTD? Or dare I say, a Shook?

My PoloVTD flew lower than I expected but more easily on its back. I've taken it past 40mph with just the 3 frame. However, the purchase and build wasn't without incident.

Shook, expensive but huge wind range. Well I'm sure you know the virtues...

Pick the sail design you like the most as they will all serve your needs.

If price is a consideration, I would go with with the NYM, although I would like to have more color and pattern choices. I think they handle nearly as smooth as a Polo, and from the wind ranges you mentioned will fit very nicely into that niche. Then you have the Shook weave -- Oh, Yeeeeaaahhhhhh. Sticker shock and the bit of a wait to get aside, you can't beat it, and quite durable from what I've heard. Wait for Paul LeMasters to chime in on this question, as his opinion is worth hearing. I think he has worn out more kites than JB has.

Unfortunately, the Shook is just not in my budget this year. I've had a bunch of unexpected expenses this summer, and I would find it difficult to justify the cost of a Shook, especially since I've never flown one. Considering the Polo would require considering Lam's ABS as well... ugghhh... decisions.... I just want to have something to fly when kite season starts here in a few weeks (YAY !).

NYM vent suits your budget and needs, it's a great kite and worthy of your consideration, go for it!

A shook mesh is worth the money ONLY if you have it to spare,... the 100% would fly for you in 10 and take your beyond 30 mph comfortably. He also offers a 135% mesh which I have seen flown when others are on mid-vents, it could probably be fun in a 40 mph gust.

Alden Millers' design "Vicki" can be flown in steady single digit winds too and take more wind than is required to overturn a city bus on that high side!

I like the lightness of the polo vented and seems to fly nice with most frames. Xvent seems to need heavier frames or very high winds, and feels like a heavy kite. But I don't like being outside in high winds = over 20mph is too much for me. I bet there are some nice barely or never used vented revs somewhere.

Or...

Have you thought about a horse trade?

I had the offer out there to trade my Zen for a vent for about a year... no one bit. Well, someone talked me into selling the Zen for cash, and that's how I'll fund the vent, at least partially.

I am certainly open to buying a lightly used vent, but I haven't seen many out there...

Yes, I sold the Zen, I haven't flown it more than twice since I offered it up for trade. Since it didn't fly in winds lower than my 1.5 with black race rods, I really had no use for it. The one thing the Zen did for me was make me appreciate the 1.5 std. more. I was really hoping that the Zen would be something that I could fly in the same winds as my SUL dual line kites.

SUL winds are more rare than 20+mph winds here, so a good solid vent is so much more valuable in my bag. I've got a line on some nice looking used vented kites, but if I end up buying new... I am still tossed between the NYM triple & the Extra vent...

3 weeks until the kickoff of kite season, I better make up my mind soon !
