  1. Gutermann thread gets highly recommended by many kite makers.. I use Gutermann Toldi-Lock a lot.. Regardless of brand, use 100% polyester thread.. Cotton content in the thread will encourage breakage and dry rot over time and exposure to the elements..
  2. The type of string (Manja) involved in these incidents typically has Glass dust embedded and was used for kite fighting.. The line itself has been banned in many of those countries.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manja_(kite) https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-37103668 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/aug/17/delhi-india-glass-coated-kite-string-kills-three-people-independence-day @CaCondorI moved your topic over to the open topic section since it isn't quad line specific..
  3. White Leading Edge and single stitch on the edge binding is done. Second stitch is added with the framing and endcaps reinforcements.. Decided to use white thread for the LE stay with it for the Edge Binding . Getting Close!!
  4. Thank you..Bag was made from the trim of the center panel and mockup stages. Added a bit of the Challengemax Poly and the bag kind of designed itself. The actual purchase of this kite has fallen through. (Life Happens) I decided since I had already allowed for it to go with the full 96" LE.. This is several inches bigger than the 1.5 standard but not Zen size either. I'd say it is about a 1.3 size given the way Rev defines their sizing.. The Advantage of additional sail area is enhanced low wind performance.. This will be (hopefully) a very good 1-5mph kite.. Framing in P2X camo and P4X camo. I've just completed the LE sleeve and hope to attach it to the sail this afternoon. Edge Binding will be in blue for this kite. (FWIW, the reason for this size choice is it allows me to frame the kite without having to cut the spars. Glue 2 Ferrules and the frame is done.)
  5. I do the same but changing the music kind of detracts from the original feel of a perfomance when it comes to dual and multiline ballet performance..
  6. DEcided to go ahead and finish the bag while I wait for the answer..
  7. Center panel completed. Larger than the template due to possibility of a longer LE than normal. This kite may end up with a 96" LE per commission owner. The panel sewing is done.. waiting to hear back on LE length before I can continue.. At this point 96" 91" or even a 72" are all possible.. Additional trim work will have to be on hold until that decision is made. The Decision, LE, Edge binding and finishing is all that remains.
  8. Panels are basted.. this will be SEW much fun!
  9. Sail is still very oversize at this point but only half the piecework and none of the sewing is done.. Center blue is just scrap to cover the mish-mash. Center will roughly look like the colorizer when done.. Still a long ways to go on this sail but you can see the pattern taking shape.
  10. This commissioned sail consist of the ChallengeMax Poly (Navy) with Silver and Sky Blue Icarex. A bit of a different look combo than I typically do but the combinations work in the colorizer so it should work in mockup.. More to come in a bit..
  11. No concerns.. That is a common line material for sport foils.
  12. I've been using Youtube but the Music Rights over the past few years are crazy.. A song playing in the background can get your video flagged so I just mute my video... I've been on youtube for a very long time but I can use pretty much what I want as a username there.
  13. No such thing as a dumb question.. To Answer your question.... ----> Exactly. Keep in mind depending on line size/brand/quality.. you will start getting resistance as the wrap count increases.. I usually keep a running tally in my head--> 3right,, 4 left OK 1 right to reset.. I reset my mental count whenever the wraps are clear.
  14. OK I took the plunge.. I tried Facebook. Purposefully, not many people know my real name. As prolific as I am here on Kitelife, I'm still a very private person outside of kites. Those that know me well can back me up on that front. I used Riffclown Riffclown. This is the name most of the individuals (including most of you) know me by.. I've gone through intense Facebook Scrutiny since that point less than 10 hours ago. "You HAVE to give us your Cell number." I guess the email I have on riffclown.com just isn't enough. "You have to send us a picture to use for facial recognition and you account is locked until we verify you." That being said, my personal foray into that social network is going to be very short-lived. I will be deleting my account if I ever get access to it again. To All, Please disregard any requests you receive from Riffclown Riffclown on Facebook.. in a few hours that will no longer be me. This was about kites and nothing else. Folks were asking about riffclown kites in certain circles and I wanted to respond.. Sorry, Facebook just isn't for me and at this point, I don't think it ever will be. I want to get the small amount of personal information I did submit off of it. Kitelife is MUCH friendlier.
  15. Bridle check complete. this kite is ready for the field..
  16. Completed Gray III today and gave it a quick bridle check.. Due to the gustiness outside, I used very short lines and flew in the swirl of the building.
  17. Gray III is framed.. Only the Bridles remain.. Will tie bridles later this evening after my sewing area cleaned up. While the width is standard 1.5 the height is a bit shorter. After flying The Gray Fade, I wanted to stick with those dimensions for this sail.. Gray II and Gray III are a matched set.. The pattern for each is the offset of the pattern for the other. In fact, the excess panel material from the Gray II is the bag for Gray III.
  18. Gray III is a 1.5-ish size and now has a leading edge.. Edge Binding and finishing this weekend..Hope to have it airworthy before the weekend is out.
  19. You have been given tons of advice.. Some of it conflicting. I suggested a minumum of the Symphony 1.8 which is very similar in size to the 170. I personally don't like the bridles on the Synapse but that's also a personal choice. I also shared the 200 Synapse or 2.2 Symphony will get a lot more use from you if you go that size in the long run. That would be my absolute first choice. Start out in a bit lighter winds and you (and your son) will be confident enough to enjoy the pull instead of being scared of it.. Edmond also gave great advice on find someone that has what you are thinking of and try theirs. There should be other fliers near you. The bottom line is it's a personal choice of what you want.. Advice is easy.. Understanding only truly comes with time holding the handles..
  20. Personally in 16MPH I'd fly the Full Vent for sure..
  21. I'm honored.. To keep from splintering your for sale topic, I'd suggest starting a new topic with your builds over in the Kite Making section of the forum. https://kitelife.com/forum/forum/120-kite-making/
  22. Nice work. I look forward to you sharing your work with us.. I see you are also using White for The Leading Edge..
  23. Just bridle it up and fly the bag..
  24. In my opinion, the cost difference between the Beach and Pro is worth the difference. But that is 100% my opinion.
