  1. Another website to check out is the AKA regional map. Click on Region 5 for Michigan and Region 6 for Indiana. IKE is an active club in the Illinois area, but draws members from around the world. If you live near Dayton, one of our members lives there and is very active in kiting. Cheers, Tom
  2. You might check this website for a kite club near you. Kite clubs are a great place to get hands-on guidance. Kite folks are always friendly about allowing you to test drive their kites ... try before you buy! MacKite sponsors the Great Lakes Kite Festival in May each year. That's a great festival to see a broad spectrum of kites and kite fliers. Ben DeAntonio (Revolution General Manager) and iQuad will be there ... great opportunity to try out a Rev kite. Prism is also scheduled to attend ... a great opportunity to fly a dual line kite. It's worth the trip just to see Lee Sedgwick and Sam Ritter flying their large Rev I stacks like they were nothing. If the wind is just right, Sam has been known to fly a 360 with his stack ... very impressive. Good luck, Tom
  3. Hmmm, less than a week away ... must have taken a "Bear" snooze. The kite would be a neat addition to my collection. But, I'm not going to participate in intimidation, begging nor ignoring. Simply going to wish quietly for the RNG to have a less than cold-hearted moment and draw my number. Cheers, Tom
  4. Well, heck ... guess I'll have to stick with SLKs and Quads. Congrats Rob!!!! Hope it brings you lots of pleasure. Cheers, Tom
  5. Since this was posted yesterday, you are obviously planning ahead to be late. Today is the drawing day ... 4 for April ... 3 for the third day!!!! I know it'll be a big disappointment for several folks, but just draw my number and put them out of their misery. Cheers, Tom
  6. Drop John an e-mail and he'll be more than happy to tell you your number. In fact, he'll probably add it to your signature line. Cheers, Tom
  7. Oh don't worry, the banter is going on ... it's just going on behind your back. Remember, I've promised to let you fly it at WSIKF
  8. That's terrible to not know what year you were born it ... at least you know the date!!! Cheers, Tom And, welcome to the forum.
  9. Shhh, nighty night little guy ... just rest your head and everything will be okay when you wake up. Cheers, Tom
  10. That was last time ... don't get greedy!!! Cheers, Tom
  11. Yes you did. John said I could have numbers 313 and 460 if no one objected. Didn't hear anything, so I guess it's a done deal. Cheers, Tom
  12. Don't know if it was a Widow Maker or if it was Jon's product, but I did watch a dualie being flown on quad lines at Kite Party. It looked interesting, but seemed out of place. Kind of like a Ferrari station wagon ... or a Volt race car. Fun as a novelty, but why mess with a good thing? I was jealous of the dual line guys ... just a whisper of a wind and they were standing in one place flying across the sky. Wonder if it was the kite or the flyer's skills that made that possible. Hmmm. Guess the RNG will have to pony up my number for the Widow Maker and let me experiment further. After all, I live in the mid-west, the Widow Maker is made here in the mid-west ... it would be better if it stayed in the mid-west. @Pete ... sorry, but you're too close to the point of manufacture ... it'd almost be incestous. But, I'll gladly let you try it out at Grand Haven!!! Cheers, Tom
  13. What kind of kite are you building? Why are you leaning towards mylar and away from ripstop? Cheers, Tom
  14. And, if you get the wrong kite, no big deal ... just switch it out for the correct one. Everyone does it, so no one looks upon it as a mistake ... just fine tuning. Cheers. Tom
  15. 300# line is way too heavy for a Rev 1.5 sail. You'll be damaging sails and breaking frame sets well before you approach the 300# limit. I use 150# line on various stacks that I have and find that to be more than adequate. With a stack of two 1.5s, you don't need to worry about heavier rods in the lead kite. Add a kite or two to the stack and then you'll need to bump up the frame set stiffness. Catch Kent from A Wind of Change sometime and talk about stacks ... he's my expert!!! As to how light a wind ... that's not as dependent on kite/lines/etc as on pilot skills. Kind of like fixed wing and helicopter pilots ... it's not the machine as much as the pilot. Takes lots of practice, but it's fun to watch yourself develop the skills to keep flying when others become grounded. When everyone is flying and the winds are dying, watch the competitive spirit come out in Rev flyers. Cheers, Tom Edited ... flew two of my stacks at Kite Party today and discovered that I'm using 150# line instead of 120# line.
  16. Spend your money on more valuable kite flying stuff. I'm a gaget nut ... love the numbers and specs etc. But, after fooling around with an anemometer for a few months, it simply wasn't being used at all. You'll develop a feel for which kite you're going to pull out of the bag based on experience. In fact, for some wind speeds either a full sail or full vent will work. In the morning when wind speed is going up, you'll grab the full vent. And in the afternoon, when wind speed will fall off, you'll grab the full sail. Again, experience is your best teacher. Use your savings to buy a good LaserPro 90# lineset in either 120 or 75~80foot length. Much better value there. Cheers and welcome to the forum, Tom
  17. Congrats Steven ... @Wayne ... well, there are a few more drawings between now and then ... you might not be off the hook yet!!! Cheers, Tom
  18. Pssst, Wayne ... after I launch it, you can hold the string at WSIKF this year. Then you can tell me what a pretty kite I won!!! Cheers, Tom
  19. But Bear, I have been bantering - really good stuff too!!! It's even been in keeping with the type of kite we're wishing for. That's probably why you can't see it ... ghost bantering!!! Cheers, Tom
  20. Hmmm, well it looks like the RNG was also half awake ... got half the name right. Guess I'm still dualless!!! Congrats Nathaniel, here's hoping you get a ton of enjoyment out of it. Cheers, Tom
  21. What kind of kites are you transporting? And, are you trying to get by without paying the extra baggage fee? I'm a cheap traveller, so pull the rods out of my Revs and put them into an inexpensive fly rod case. That becomes a carry on item ... same class as the book you carry on to read. Some simply fold their Rev sails and place them in their checked bag ... I like to roll them around 2~3 inch diameter foam tube to prevent some creases. For the additional soft foil kites, I use a compression sack ... last trip had a 100 sq ft foil, a 20 sq ft foil, three 5 sq ft foils, two 35-foot banner tails, two tube tails, and an assortment of flying lines, sand anchors and misc stuff. My compression sack is sized to be my main carry on piece. If it doesn't fit in the overhead ... I release the compress straps and reshape it to fit. Rev handles, stakes, and other questionable items go in my checked suitcase with the Revs and my cloths. This has worked for several one week trips without paying an extra baggage fee. Of course, if you fly in excess of 100,000 miles a year, then you're not worried about these steps. Cheers, Tom
  22. All right!!! Been off line at U-Make all weekend. Then came home to find my wireless router had gone belly up. Finally discovered that one of my neighbors has an unsecured network ... yep, stealing band width off him till the new router arrives. So, now I have the opportunity to be available when John calls asking for mailing directions for my new (first) dual line kite. Okay John, you can now fire up my friend, the RNG, and make those other subscribers happy that I finally have a dual line kite!!!! Cheers, Tom
